Composing The Party Line: Music And Politics In Early Cold War Poland And East Germany, David G. Tompkins
Composing The Party Line: Music And Politics In Early Cold War Poland And East Germany, David G. Tompkins
Purdue University Press Books
This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin’s death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid- to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
According to the 2000 census report for the state of Utah, the state population included almost 87,883 foreign-born citizens from Latin America. In 1990 there were only 13,825. Compared with Asian-born citizens and other foreign-born citizens, this is the highest increase of an ethnic group of people in Utah. Three-fourths of these Latino foreign-born citizens are entering Utah from Mexico. These numbers don’t even include the native-born Mexicans that have grown up in Utah. All signs and research suggests that this trend will continue. Now, more than ever, it is important to ensure that Mexican immigrants have a place in …
Christian Hand-Bells In Celtic Lands, Adam Crandell, Dr. E. Harrison Powley
Christian Hand-Bells In Celtic Lands, Adam Crandell, Dr. E. Harrison Powley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The zealous Christian missionary Patrick arrived in Ireland in 432 A.D., laboring to introduce to the Celtic tribes there the gospel and monasticism. He used bells, among other clerical instruments, for this purpose. Bells were employed to sundry ends, from the mundane gathering of the missionaries to the more miraculous effecting of curses. His followers, both members of the church and fellow missionaries, revered the bells that Patrick used. Accordingly, his bells would become treated as relics, passed down from cleric to cleric as a divine investiture. Other later missionaries like Columba, Columbanus, and Ninian would also adopt the use …

I Dreamt Of David: An Electronic Music Composition, Jeremy Bowen, Dr. Steven Ricks
Journal of Undergraduate Research
On November 28, 2006, I was standing backstage in the Dumke Recital Hall at the University of Utah, frazzled and slightly nervous, with a magnetic sensor strapped around my chest, and its output cable dagling out of my shirt. When I received the signal, I walked out to the stage, took a little bow as the audience applauded, and plugged myself into my computer, which was connected to the sound system. I sat down on a chair, centered on the stage, and took a slow breath. The audience sat riveted, as I breathed in and out, slowly and calmly, but …

“I Had Walked The Damascus Road, Seen The Light, Repented Of Past Transgressions…And Switched To Viola.” An Annotated Index Of The Letters Of William Primrose, Jennifer Call, Dr. Claudine Bigelow
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project was designed to create an index to the over 5,000 letters of the violist William Primrose that are held in the Primrose International Viola Archive (PIVA) at Brigham Young University. This index will be an aid to violists or others interested in researching aspects of the life and career of William Primrose through his letter. After my work on the index it is over halfway completed. As it is with many archival projects, this was a great task for one undergraduate. Dr. Claudine Bigelow, my advisor and viola professor, desired that the catalog include the date, author, and …

Rediscovering The New York Harp Ensemble, Laura Allen, David A. Day
Rediscovering The New York Harp Ensemble, Laura Allen, David A. Day
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Almost forty years ago, a Hungarian immigrant named Aristid von Wurtzler created a quartet of harpists known as the New York Harp Ensemble. Throughout the Ensemble’s career, they played in over 60 countries, performed at the White House on many occasions over the course of four administrations, and even performed for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. From standard works by Beethoven to jazzy Gershwin pieces, from beautiful works of Saint-Saens to familiar tunes such as Yankee Doodle, Wurtzler created over 200 arrangements for this quartet. The year 1997 brought the death of Aristid von Wurtzler, and with his …
Hiva Usu: Sacred Choral Music Of Tonga, Robert Swenson, Dr. Paul Broomhead
Hiva Usu: Sacred Choral Music Of Tonga, Robert Swenson, Dr. Paul Broomhead
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Protestant missionaries from England first set foot in Tonga in the early 19th century. Along with a radically new theology, they brought with them a musical style rooted in Western European tradition. Tongans whole-heartedly embraced Christianity and eagerly integrated elements of European culture into their own – both in a religious and in a musical sense. This combining of cultures resulted in a unique style of hymn singing that blended Western tonality and form with traditional Tongan musical practices. At first, only hymns from the official church hymnal were sung. As the style’s popularity spread, native Tongans began composing their …

Concert Studies Companion, Benjamin Taylor, Dr. David Brown
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The primary goal of this project was to compose a companion duet for eight of the sixteen etudes in Concert Studies for Trumpet, providing a pedagogical tool for use in the trumpet studio at BYU. The remaining eight etudes are being considered for a similar project next year. Once the entire sixteen etudes are completed, I plan to submit the project for publication.
Building Bridges Through Music Tamil Nadu, India, Shaunel Watts, Susan Kenney
Building Bridges Through Music Tamil Nadu, India, Shaunel Watts, Susan Kenney
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The southern most Indian state, Tamil Nadu, is home to over 40 colonies of leprosy affected people. To maintain livelihood, these “untouchables” generally resort to a life of begging. The situation has vastly improved in the past decade as charitable groups have helped accommodate the medical and physical needs of the people. Unfortunately, the colony children remain largely disadvantaged because of their social status and poor living conditions. In 2001, the non-profit organization, Rising Star Outreach (RSO), began a boarding school to help the children of the colonies.
Exploring The Impact Of German-American Heritage And The Musical Works Of William Henry Pommer, Holly Cassell
Exploring The Impact Of German-American Heritage And The Musical Works Of William Henry Pommer, Holly Cassell
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
William Henry Pommer (1851-1937) was a versatile German-American composer and musician of St. Louis. He held various musical positions as an educator, director, and performer. He was also an active composer with almost 500 works to his credit, composed in a variety of styles that reflect the variety of the different positions he held. Through archival work in St. Louis and by studying and playing through Pommer’s music, we have identified different styles that he composed in and begun to pick music for performances to best represent his work. In addition to performances, recordings of these performances will be on …

Rave Reviews The History Of Akron's Tuesday Musical, Thomas Bacher, Cynthia Harrison, Sharon Cebula
University of Akron Press Publications
The Tuesday Musical Club was founded in 1887 by thirteen young Akron women who had an overwhelming desire to share their love of music. With further support of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling, the wife of industrialist Frank Seiberling, the organization grew like many other musical organizations across the country. Unlike similar clubs, the Akron-based entity continued to expand and is one of a very few that have survived. Among the artists who have appeared as a part of the rich history of Akron's Tuesday Musical Organization are Vladimir Horowitz, Artur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Yascha Heifetz, Glenn Gould, Van Cliburn, Isaac Stern, …
