The Effect Of Choral Music Education On Literacy Achievement, Keith Alan Hearnsberger
The Effect Of Choral Music Education On Literacy Achievement, Keith Alan Hearnsberger
Theses and Dissertations
American education was going through dramatic change in the beginning of the 21st century. The way children were educated was constantly evolving. Public schools, private schools, parochial schools, charter schools, and many other types of educational institutions were affected by various federal and state regulations since the 1960's. The students, teachers, and educational leaders in these institutions were consistently affected by regulations, increased academic demands, and an ever-changing educational landscape. The educational administrator and music educators were required to be innovative when seeking change in policy in regards to educational achievement while maintaining a commitment to choral music education. The …

Salvation Triptych, Jeremy Bakken
Salvation Triptych, Jeremy Bakken
Music ETDs
Salvation Triptych is a three movement composition for choir, winds, strings, and percussion. The texts include the traditional Kyrie and two Christian texts from the 4th-5th Centuries: The Word of the Cross by Paulinus of Nola (trans. Helen Waddell) and two stanzas from a hymn by Ambrose of Milan. Movement I: Kyrie involves the greatest musical forces (SATB choir, flute, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass, timpani, gong, chimes, and wood block). Due to the brevity of the text, the choir entries are relatively short and temporally separated, allowing this longest of the movements to …

Music And Conflict Resolution: Can A Music And Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?, Parfait Adegboyé Bassalé
Music And Conflict Resolution: Can A Music And Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?, Parfait Adegboyé Bassalé
Dissertations and Theses
The Story and Song Centered Pedagogy (SSCP) is a workshop that uses songs, stories and reflective questioning to increase empathy. This preliminary study tested the prediction that being exposed to the SSCP would increase empathy using, the Emotional Concern (EC) and Perspective Taking (PT) subscales of the renowned Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) (Davis, 1990). Subjects self-reported their answers to the IRI before and after undergoing the SSCP intervention. Comparing their pre and post intervention results, no statistically significant changes were noticed for the EC and PT scales (p-value = 0.7093 for EC; p-value = 0.6328 for PT). These results stand …

""A Suitable Soloist For My Piano Concerto": Teresa CarreñO As A Promoter Of Edvard Grieg's Music." Notes. 70.1 (2013): 37-58., Anna E. Kijas
Published Works
Teresa Carreño (1853–1917) first performed Edvard Grieg’s (1843– 1907) Pictures from Folk Life, op. 19 [Folkelivsbilleder] and Piano Concerto in A Minor, op. 16, during her tours in the United States in the early 1880s. She continued to perform his works in the United States and abroad through 1914. Previously overlooked correspondence, reviews, and other primary sources, such as concert programs, housed in the Edvard Grieg Collection in the Bergen Offentlige Bibliothek, and the Teresa Carreño Collection in Archives and Special Collections of the Vassar College Libraries, are examined in this article in order to provide fresh …

An Analysis Of Middle/High School Band And Orchestra Festival Ratings, Phillip Hash
Faculty Publications - Music
The purpose of this study was to compare festival ratings among multiple instrumental ensemble types (bands and orchestras), grade levels (middle school and high school), and classifications (1-6). Data included individual and final ratings from 144 judges (108 concert- performance, 36 sight-reading) at 36 contest sites sponsored by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) in 2010. Research questions examined the distribution, reliability, and group differences of ratings by ensemble type (band vs. orchestra), age level (middle school vs. high school), and classification (1-6). The average final rating was 1.58 (SD = .66) and 91.5% (n = 901) of …

At MayDay Group Colloquium 24 in East Lansing, MI, Sandra Stauffer (2012) charged that: "If we want change, we need to start telling different stories . . . we work with beginning teachers, and we worry about teacher identities. We tell them a story...one that does not serve them well. A story that they will be prepared. Maybe we should tell stories of self-making, of re-making and replacing ourselves. Of preparation as a constantly evolving teacher story. Maybe then transformation can be the norm."
Sandy’s comments of transformation resonated strongly with the very project I was presenting at the same …

Robert Burns, James Johnson, And The Manuscript Of "The German Lairdie", Patrick Scott
Studies in Scottish Literature
Reports, illustrates, and assesses a fragment of manuscript music now in the G. Ross Roy Collection at the University of South Carolina, for Burns's song "The German Lairdie," headed in Burns's hand, and possibly with the music in his hand also. A note with the fragment, which was exhibited as Burns's autograph in 1896, states that it had been sent by Burns to the Edinburgh editor and publisher James Johnson, for inclusion in his Scots Musical Museum.

The Physiology And Ergonomy Of Classical Guitar Technique And It’S Application To The Prevention Of Repetitive Strain Injuries, Micah Muldowney, Lawrence Green
The Physiology And Ergonomy Of Classical Guitar Technique And It’S Application To The Prevention Of Repetitive Strain Injuries, Micah Muldowney, Lawrence Green
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The benefits of a thorough study and understanding of the physiological principles behind any demanding task are obvious: It results in greater efficiency. This especially holds true in fields or activities that require extreme accuracy or attention to nuance. The musical world in general has for many years appreciated the value of this sort of physiological study, knowing that a more physiologically correct technique not only increases ease and accuracy, it reduces the risk of certain injuries commonly acquired through prolonged incorrect repetition. Unfortunately, the world of classical guitar has only just been mainstreamed in the musical conservatory in the …

When I was a child (out of the many dreams I had as a child), I wanted to be a scientist. The idea of discovering new things about the world sounded fascinating. However, as I read about scientists, I noticed a funny thing. Many major scientific discoveries happened by accident: x-rays, penicillin, the smallpox vaccine . . .

Forgotten Music From The 18th And 19th Centuries: Rediscovering Neglected Works Through The Creation Of A Modern Performance Edition, Fidel Perez, David Day
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The written violin repertoire is vast, yet the amount of published material is relatively limited to performers. Available viola repertoire is even narrower. A person can easily find pieces by the most famous composers, such as Beethoven, Mozart and Bach, in a music library. These pieces, however, represent only a mere fraction of actual written material. There are many lesser-known composers whose works have been virtually ignored. The number of pieces available to us in modern day editions is probably only half of what has actually been written; many of those still unpublished pieces have gone totally unknown, with only …

Companion For Concert Studies For Trumpet, Benjamin Taylor, Dr. David Brown
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The primary goal of this project was to compose a companion duet for eight of the sixteen etudes in Concert Studies for Trumpet, providing a pedagogical tool for use in the trumpet studio at BYU. The remaining eight etudes were already completed as part of a similar project last year. Now that the entire set of sixteen duets are complete, I plan to submit the project for publication.

Morality, The Sacred And God In Ghanaian Hip- Hop, Harry N. K. Odamtten
History
The adoption of Hip-Hop by the world’s youth is a turning point in the history of youth culture in particular and global public culture in general. The embracing of Hip-Hop in the West African country of Ghana is exemplary of this worldwide transformation. The indigenous Ghanaian version of Hip-Hop is Hip-Life. This Ghanaian musical genre is a combination of Hip-Hop and High-Life. High-Life is also a Ghanaian genre with West African and Afro- Diaspora roots. It emerged in Ghana as part of the anti-colonial struggle in West Africa, and has spawned of many varieties until the emergence of Hip- Life. …

Learning To Teach One’S Self: The Methodology Of Musicianship, Holly Miller Jones, Dr. Roger Drinkall, Dr. Dian Baker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This research grant allowed me to spend time studying something with which I have been fascinated for years. As a long-time serious music student, I have seen a surprising disparity in the musical progress of students devoting comparable hours to practicing their instrument. I have been at times amazed at the musical proficiency of certain fellow students who spend two to four hours per day practicing; at other times, discouraged at the lack of musical proficiency of other fellow students, who spend up to twice that much time practicing.

Over The Individualism Wall: Creating An Ubuntu Community At Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish, Jordan Layton, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As I near my host family’s neighborhood, the streets become constraining tunnels. Lining the curbs are wall after wall of concrete above my head, topped with razor wires, electric lines, or metal spikes. The only breaks to the walled monotony are tall, jail-like gates. Shutting the automatic gate behind me instills the intentional impression of exclusion from the outside. Privacy and security of walled homes is increasingly sought after, even in townships where resistance to apartheid once forged strong communal unity. Here, such walls are also signs of community rejection. Both anthropologists and politicians have noted a decline in sense …
The Lives And Works Of Bernard And Jan Stiastny: Creating A Modern Performance Edition, Seth Castleton, Julie Bevan
The Lives And Works Of Bernard And Jan Stiastny: Creating A Modern Performance Edition, Seth Castleton, Julie Bevan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The violoncello emerged as a vehicle of virtuosity starting in the latter half of the 17th Century and continued to gain prestige as a capable solo instrument throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern cellists are aware of the plethora of excellent romantic and modern/post-modern solo cello compositions, and the relative dearth of excellent classical repertoire composed for the same instrument. Apart from Haydn’s two concertos, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, and five sonatas, and to a lesser degree, the works of the cellist/composer Luigi Boccherini, it is hard to find classical cello compositions being performed today.

New Music For Byu Gamelan Ensemble, Benjamin Taylor, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project greatly benefits the School of Music because it provides the Brigham Young University Gamelan Ensemble a new piece of music written specifically for their unique instrumentation. The BYU Gamelan Ensemble was recently formed in Fall 2008 under the direction of Jeremy Grimshaw. The ensemble plays custom made Balinese gamelan instruments imported from Bali, a small island near Indonesia. Traditionally, there were three types of gamelan each with distinct tuning systems. Consequently, each gamelan could only play one tuning system. However, BYU’s gamelan was uniquely constructed to combine all three tuning systems into one gamelan making it possible to …

Jazz keyboard is a relatively young genre. The piano has been around for hundreds of years, and before that other keyboard instruments were used in music making. The classical piano nomenclature has been codified through the years so that there is a unified system and approach to teaching it. There are endless method books out there on how to teach it, but by and large the material is the same. In teaching Jazz piano there are many different pedagogical approaches that have not yet been unified into a single system. The notation of chords varies greatly among different pedagogues. For …

The Samoan Islands are home to a rich and fascinating history and culture which is slowly disappearing as other world influences continue to have an impact on them. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, it is our responsibility to seek to preserve our heritage, both for our own enlightenment and for the benefit of future generations. Having served my mission in Samoa I have been able to experience firsthand the wonder and beauty of their culture and also to see the many changes it is undergoing.

Melos-V Database: Melodic Organization, Structure And Variant Database, Ryan Seamons, Dr. Jerry L. Laccard
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the last century, a new discipline developed around the scientific analysis of musical microstructures found in authentic or “deep-layer” folksong. Ilmari Krohn of Finland was the first to publish in this field (Suomen kansan sävelmiä—Volumes I–IV, 1904–1928). This publication came into the hands of two young Hungarian university students who later became world-class composers, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, who had already been collecting peasant tunes in remote rural villages. Krohn’s analysis and classification paradigm was just what Bartók and Kodály needed to make sense of the rich musical structures they were finding in the ancient layers of the …
"Take A Sad Song And Make It Better": Exploring Rewards Related To Liking Unfamiliar Sad Music, John Hogue
"Take A Sad Song And Make It Better": Exploring Rewards Related To Liking Unfamiliar Sad Music, John Hogue
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis tested some of Levinson's (1997) ideas on why people like music that makes them sad. A path model of this effect was interpreted from Levinson's theory, and 5 of the paths were tested. These paths were that music would directly create a communion with the song, that happiness and sadness would mediate this effect, that absorption would moderate the direct path, that absorption would moderate the songs' ability to evoke the emotions, and that satisfaction would moderate the emotions' influence on liking the songs.
A pilot study was conducted to determine if the songs evoked their intended emotions. …

A Comparative Study Of Stylistic Influences Of Three Twentieth-Century Piano Etudes, Karen L. Rogers, Dr. Jeffrey L. Shumway
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Nineteenth-century composers changed the piano etude from a relatively dry technical exercise to a concert piece that explored new possibilities of technique and musicality. In the twentiethcentury, composers of the piano etude invented new ways of approaching the piano, integrated a variety of unusual artistic influences and introduced new challenges and twists to traditional piano technique. The changes made to the piano etude in the nineteenth century are fairly well known. However, the piano etudes of the twentieth century are less often played or researched.

Using Genetic Algorithms To Harmonize A Melody: An Application In Computer Music, Weston Cann, Dr. David Michael Cottle

Currently, there is a wide variety of computer applications available for aiding musicians. Most common are applications whose purpose is to help render the performance of a piece (sequencers) or help the user prepare the score of a piece. Less common are applications designed to aid the composer in exploring musical possibilities. This project is an attempt to add to this second body of applications.
Expanding Horizons In Late 20th Century Music Composition, Todd Colemana, Stephen Jones
Expanding Horizons In Late 20th Century Music Composition, Todd Colemana, Stephen Jones
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Art music composition in the 20th century has been characterized by rapid development and change in theory and practice. With the resultant diversity of concurrent stylistic traits, personal philosophies on the purpose of music, harmonic languages, and aesthetic approaches, it is difficult to make any broad generalizations about composition of serious music in our time and the direction it is going.
