Bitches Unleashed: Women In Rio's Funk Movement, Performances Of Heterosexual Femininity, And Possibilities Of Resistance, Raquel Moreira Jan 2014

Bitches Unleashed: Women In Rio's Funk Movement, Performances Of Heterosexual Femininity, And Possibilities Of Resistance, Raquel Moreira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rio de Janeiro's funk movement is one of Brazil's most important contemporary cultural and musical expressions. Emerged in the 1970s, Rio's funk was consolidated in the favelas during the 1980s, establishing an ambiguous and tense relationship with local government and media: at times, being legitimized as a cultural form, but also being frequently criminalized. The music is a hybrid combination of diverse Afro rhythms and a heavy bass line, and it is performed in aggressive ways, as well as with mockery and sensuality. Women in Rio's funk, the funkeiras, joined the movement in the late 1990s performing about sex, relationships, …

Emotional Processing In Music: Study In Affective Responses To Tonal Modulation In Controlled Harmonic Progressions And Real Music, Marina Korsakova-Kreyn, Jay W. Dowling Jan 2014

Emotional Processing In Music: Study In Affective Responses To Tonal Modulation In Controlled Harmonic Progressions And Real Music, Marina Korsakova-Kreyn, Jay W. Dowling

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

Tonal modulation is one of the main structural and expressive aspects of music in the European musical tradition. Experiment 1 investigated affective responses to modulations to all eleven major and minor keys (relative to the starting tonality) in brief, specially constructed harmonic progressions, by using six bipolar scales related to valence, potency, and synaesthesia. The results indicated the dependence of affective response on degree of modulation in terms of key proximity, and of mode. Experiment 2 examined affective responses to the most common modulations in nineteenth-century piano music: to the subdominant, dominant, and minor sixth in the major mode. The …

Developing Information Literacy Skills For Tomorrow’S Music Industry Leaders, Keith Hatschek, Veronica Wells Jan 2014

Developing Information Literacy Skills For Tomorrow’S Music Industry Leaders, Keith Hatschek, Veronica Wells

Conservatory of Music Faculty Articles

What research skills should undergraduate music industry studies majors develop over the course of their studies? With the non-stop proliferation of news and information sources available, how are students being trained to do research appropriate to their field to make informed decisions? Some employers now screen for information literacy skills as a preferred qualification, due to the perception that recent graduates lack advanced research skills. This paper discusses one model of developing research skills that a future music industry leader will need. The authors show the collaboration between faculty and librarians that progressively teach students to find, access, evaluate, and …

Never Give A Sword To A Man Who Can't Dance, Colin Slade Jan 2014

Never Give A Sword To A Man Who Can't Dance, Colin Slade

Masters Theses

War dances have long been a powerful means of preparing warriors for combat or the intimidation of an enemy, but they are also used in the ceremonial supplication of deity or celebration of victory. They are a fundamental artifact of many cultures throughout the world. Nevertheless, the United States of America boasts the most powerful military in history, yet it lacks a war dance. This is valid until one accepts a simple truth; military drill is a dance. However, Americans would object to such a proposition even though they have adopted and adapted military drill as their own, describe it …

Analysis Of Toccata And Fugue In D Minor, Isela Guerra Jan 2014

Analysis Of Toccata And Fugue In D Minor, Isela Guerra

A with Honors Projects

This analysis will not be given as your typical analysis which is made to makes sense mathematically. We could attempt to do this but at times the very soul of music is sucked out and we lose the imagination and spirit behind it. I know this because I attempted to do this same; for that very reason this analysis will be given as a story. There will be a girl, creatures and fairies. The creature will appear when the sound and feel of the music is ominous. The fairies will appear when the sound and feel is playful. This story …

Inventing Identities: The Case Of Frederick May, Mark Fitzgerald Jan 2014

Inventing Identities: The Case Of Frederick May, Mark Fitzgerald

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter examines how Frederick May has been depicted in previous musicological literature and the ways in which both biographical facts and May’s music have been misrepresented in an attempt to create the impression that he was part of the main stream of central European modernism. The article uncovers new material regarding the early stages of May’s career and demonstrates that May’s educational trajectory was similar to other pupils of Vaughan Williams. The article counters the narrative of failure created by musicologists who judge May for failing to achieve aesthetic aims that he never set out to attain and reflects …

Issues And Challenges In The Delivery Of Secondary School Music Education In Ireland : A Regional Case Study, Marita Murray Jan 2014

Issues And Challenges In The Delivery Of Secondary School Music Education In Ireland : A Regional Case Study, Marita Murray

Theses

Research in effective music experiences during childhood and teenage years has shown the potential for significant developmental effects. However, the number of students studying music as a subject in secondary school in Ireland is statistically low in comparison with other areas of schooling. International literature points to a number of key issues and significant challenges in the delivery of music as a subject, yet there has been little Irish research carried out in this area. This study aims to examine the delivery of school music education in a sample of Irish post-primary schools. It is a case study in delivery …

Folk Influences Of Aaron Copland And Britten, Tyler Krug Jan 2014

Folk Influences Of Aaron Copland And Britten, Tyler Krug

Theses and Dissertations

In the more recent past, nationalism, or a pride in one's country, has been the dominating factor for much of the world's historical events. Wars have been propagandized, countries have been fundamentally built, destroyed and reinvigorated, and for better or worse, this principle influences one's beliefs today as one's knowledge of the world expands in conjunction with technology. Folk music has always been a form of national pride and has been used as an exploit for the reasons listed above; therefore composers have maintained an interest in a national sound. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, composers began to use …

Patronage: The Renaissance And Today, Thomas E. Adams Jan 2014

Patronage: The Renaissance And Today, Thomas E. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Patronage, as it will be discussed in this context, is the "money and support...given to an artist, organization, etc." (Merriam-Webster.com). The word itself comes from "patronus" in the Latin language, meaning "defender, protector...advocate" (Harper, Online Etymology). The concept of patronage existed long before the Renaissance (14th - 17th centuries), but did not come into the forefront in terms of artistic support until the 1300s. There is no specific, definite date to the start of patronage. In fact, it could be said that a hired person working to complete a singular product is being patronized, meaning that this occurred much earlier …

In Search Of Murmurings (Full Score), Luke Martin Jan 2014

In Search Of Murmurings (Full Score), Luke Martin

Honors Theses

"In Search of Murmurings" is deeply indebted to my reading of Marcel Proust's Swann's Way and explores his concept of recombining lost memories in the liminal space of our inner selves. Certain moments in the piece act as aural triggers for memory eruptions into my lost and fragmented experience of past composers' works. As much as this piece is an exploration of Proust, it is also an exploration of myself. By following these memory eruptions, I am departing from the convention, expected, and narrative path; I am asking: what happens when I allow the illogical and non-linear to take control?

Essential Music Therapist Attributes For Relationship-Building With Children: Does Our Profession Train Personal Abilities?, Jean M. Nemeth

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

The purpose of this sequential mixed method investigation was to discern the personal attributes that a music therapist employs to engender therapeutic relationships with children and to begin ascertaining the music therapy profession’s attempts to foster these qualities in music therapy students. The overarching goals of this dissertation were to identify aspects of relationship-building that go beyond skills, techniques, and theoretic orientation and to open a discussion about how to best address training of the person of the music therapist. The Phase One phenomenological inquiry consisted of thematic cross-comparison of in-depth interviews with five highly experienced children’s music therapists. Results …
