Singing An Imaginal Dialogue: A Study Of A Bereavement-Specific Music Therapy Intervention, Yasmine A. Iliya
Singing An Imaginal Dialogue: A Study Of A Bereavement-Specific Music Therapy Intervention, Yasmine A. Iliya
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to understand the experience of singing an imaginal dialogue with a deceased loved one. This bereavement-specific music therapy intervention was an adaptation of Shear, Frank, Houck, and Reynolds’ (2005) imaginal dialogue intervention and was heavily influenced by Austin’s (2008) method of vocal psychotherapy. Following Shear’s (2006) use of the spoken imaginal dialogue with therapists, the guiding question of the present study was: What are creative arts therapists’ experiences of singing the intervention? The sample consisted of nine female creative arts therapists with a minimum of three years of clinical experience. It included women who …

Exploring Community Engagement In The Indianapolis Opera Scene, Nicole Vasconi
Exploring Community Engagement In The Indianapolis Opera Scene, Nicole Vasconi
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Despite its long history, the majority of today's society no longer holds this art form in such high regard. This is especially true for American culture, where opera companies are operating amidst a tumultuous time of foreclosures. The reasons for opera's continued decline in popularity among American audiences is a hotly debated topic for music historians and administrators, but the fact remains that the general public who once regarded opera as popular entertainment now rejects it as paltry and pointless. It is too Like many contemporary American opera companies, Indianapolis Opera and easy to cite the operas themselves as the …

A Survey Of Choral Ensemble Memorization Techniques, Margaret A. Alley
A Survey Of Choral Ensemble Memorization Techniques, Margaret A. Alley
Phi Kappa Phi Research Symposium (Archived)
Choral ensembles memorize music for concerts and other performances. Previous research in memorizing musical material is mostly anecdotal and primarily applied to individual instrumentalists. Research in choral memorization is nonexistent. This study aimed to systematically find out what memorization techniques are used in choral ensemble settings and to examine them based on existing literature in music memorizing. A survey was sent to choral directors and teachers in Southeast Georgia, collecting data on whether or not choral ensembles memorize their music and why, specific memorization techniques, and the aspects of memorization that present challenges for ensemble members. Fourteen choral directors and …
Dolce Stil Novo, Timothy W. Mcdunn
Dolce Stil Novo, Timothy W. Mcdunn
Compositions
Dolce Stil Novo is a slightly unconventional kind of tone poem. As the title suggests, the main inspiration for the piece is the poetry of Dante Alighieri, especially that subset of it which belongs to his so-called "Sweet New Style." While the three successive intermezzi are tied only obliquely to this subject, the first and final movements make direct reference to Dante's Sweet New Style as found in the Vita Nuova, an autobiographical compilation of prose and verse. In this way, the piece is a reflection on Dante's writings from two perspectives: that of the author (in the first and …

Critical Editions And Comparative Analysis Of Three Representative Wind Band Works From The French Revolution, Adam Gary Kehl
Critical Editions And Comparative Analysis Of Three Representative Wind Band Works From The French Revolution, Adam Gary Kehl
Theses and Dissertations
The French Revolution witnessed the greatest output of music for wind band before the twentieth century. The importance of wind bands and wind repertoire grew for several reasons including, most notably, their participation in government sponsored outdoor national festivals. Festival celebrations were large gatherings in which wind band music was a central component. The French National Guard Band was the dominant musical ensemble in revolutionary France; its leaders, François Gossec, Bernard Sarrette, and Charles-Simon Catel, were among France's most important musical figures between 1789-1799. These men, in combination with music schools established in Paris during the Revolution, helped shaped the …
Expansion And Contraction In Movements I And Vii Of Gyorgy Ligeti's Hamburg Concerto, Andrew Charles Hannon
Expansion And Contraction In Movements I And Vii Of Gyorgy Ligeti's Hamburg Concerto, Andrew Charles Hannon
Theses and Dissertations
György Ligeti's final composition, Hamburg Concerto (1999, rev. 2002), features his compositional technique of expansion and contraction. The concerto is scored for two flutes, oboe, two bassett horns (both doubling on clarinet), bassoon, solo double horn, four natural horns, trumpet, trombone, two percussionists, and single strings. The natural overtones of the horns offer unique harmonic possibilities that relate to Ligeti's use of expansion/contraction. While several analysts have examined expansion/contraction in other works by Ligeti, no one has yet looked at this technique in Hamburg Concerto, particularly as applied to Ligeti's use of natural overtones. This paper examines the two outer …
Arts Entrepreneurship: An Essential Sub-System Of The Artist's Meta-Praxis, Jonathan Gangi
Arts Entrepreneurship: An Essential Sub-System Of The Artist's Meta-Praxis, Jonathan Gangi
Theses and Dissertations
As the field of Arts Entrepreneurship education continues to grow, the barriers it confronts prevent maximum vitality. Leading scholars and administrators indicate that program development and formal accreditation standards are important components supporting the field's growth. As such, this document explores next steps and examines how to move the field towards academic maturity.
First, notable Arts Entrepreneurship academic programs are compared and contrasted as a representative sample of existing curricular approaches. Second, issues of accreditation are analyzed as barriers preventing growth, followed by recommendations for removing these obstacles. Third, the Artist's Meta-Praxis conceptual framework is presented as a way to …

Improvisation In A Fourth-Grade Music Class, Lauren Julia King Driscoll
Theses and Dissertations
With the intent of improving the understanding of music learning, I investigated the processes of tonal, rhythm, melodic, and harmonic improvisation among my fourth-grade students and me. The following were the guiding research questions. 1. How did I adapt music improvisation strategies for my intact class of fourth-grade students? 2. How did those students participate in music improvisation experiences? 3. How did those students describe their music improvisation experiences? Seventeen fourth-grade students participated in this study, and I participated in this study as a participant observer. Over the course of five weeks, I taught ten 50-minute music classes, where I …

The Remaking Of An American Opera: A Detailed Look At Carlisle Floyd's Grand Opera 'The Passion Of Jonathan Wade', Joshua R. Wentz
The Remaking Of An American Opera: A Detailed Look At Carlisle Floyd's Grand Opera 'The Passion Of Jonathan Wade', Joshua R. Wentz
Theses and Dissertations
Carlisle Floyd's single grand opera, The Passion of Jonathan Wade, premiered in 1962 in New York City only to be placed on a shelf for the next twenty-eight years to collect dust. In 1990, David Gockley at Houston Grand Opera commissioned a revival of the work, prompting Floyd to write eighty percent new music and libretto. The two versions are similar in plot but are set very different musically.
This document examines the composer, a historical background of the American landscape at the time of each premiere, and a brief analytical examination of The Passion of Jonathan Wade in both …
A Review Of 'Spaces Of Solidarity: Karen Identity In The Thai-Burma Borderlands' By Rachel Sharples, Heather Maclachlan
A Review Of 'Spaces Of Solidarity: Karen Identity In The Thai-Burma Borderlands' By Rachel Sharples, Heather Maclachlan
Department of Music Faculty Publications
In 1949, civil war broke out in the newly independent country then known as Burma, and now known as Myanmar. The war, which continues to this day, pits the central government (made up mostly of Burmans) against dozens of ethnic minority insurgent groups. One of the largest and most militarily successful of these ethnic insurgent groups is the Karen National Liberation Army, which contests the state army in southeastern Burma/Myanmar in areas of Karen State abutting the border with Thailand. The conflict has created tremendous hardship for civilians in the area, who speak mutually unintelligible Karennic languages and who variously …

Formal Properties As The Basis For Value In Music, Thomas B. Yee
Formal Properties As The Basis For Value In Music, Thomas B. Yee
Global Tides
This paper defends the thesis that value in a piece of music is based in its formal properties rather than its non-formal properties. Two arguments are presented to support this conclusion. The first argument shows that if value in music is to be objective, then it must be grounded in a piece's formal properties rather than its non-formal properties. In the second argument, a number of alternate possibilities for grounding value in music are considered and shown to miss the mark or be inadequate. Finally, a number of possible objections against the arguments and conclusion are considered and possible responses …
