Through The Lens Of Reality Television: Human Translation And Subtitling, Sarah Elizabeth Wieczorek
Through The Lens Of Reality Television: Human Translation And Subtitling, Sarah Elizabeth Wieczorek
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This paper looks at the continued need for human translation and subtitling. As the world becomes more globally connected, particularly in regards to reality television, more than solely a translation of language is required. The lens of reality television demonstrates the need for both a translation of culture as well as language. This thesis will look specifically at the Netflix program, Made in Mexico. It will focus on the areas of regionalism and metalinguistic content, explicit language, code-switching, Spanglish, and gender confusion in pronoun use from Spanish to English. The future of fansubbing and other methods of human translation are …
The Joy Of Listening: Three Voices In The Poetry Of Wisława Szymborska, Mimi Thompson
The Joy Of Listening: Three Voices In The Poetry Of Wisława Szymborska, Mimi Thompson
CMC Senior Theses
One of the greatest feats that a poet may achieve in his or her lifetime is to develop a voice so characteristic of themself, it would be impossible to confuse it with that of any other poet. Polish-speaking and non-Polish-speaking scholars alike have agreed that the voice of 1996 Nobel Laureate Wisława Szymborska is utterly distinct, despite the fact that her poems explore a wide range of topics and are told from multiple narrative perspectives, rarely featuring herself through any personal details. How, then, is it possible for hundreds of poems, each with their own narrator, to still be “heard” …
Interlingual Morphology And Wakean Topology, Stephen Valeri
Interlingual Morphology And Wakean Topology, Stephen Valeri
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
As an example of limit literature (literature that exhausts the entirety of what is possible in a given form), Finnegans Wake has been an inspiration for the theories of figures like Kristeva and Derrida to reveal the structural and linguistic operations of texts generally. In defamiliarizing the processes of word formation, the Wake compels us to attend to morphology’s structuring role in a work. My project focuses on Phillipe Sollers and Stephen Heath’s French translation of part of the concluding section of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake to observe how the attempt to approximate Joyce’s interlingual morphology in translation contributes to …

User-Side Assessment On English To Thai And Thai To English Machine Interpreting: The Case Of Google Translate, Thatchaphon Silpi
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aims to assess Google Translate´s effectiveness in English-Thai consecutive interpreting based on users' comprehension and to investigate users’ satisfaction with MI renditions. Ten native speakers of Thai and eight native speakers of English were asked to listen to the translated speeches and complete a questionnaire to assess the Adequacy and Fluency of the MI. The findings showed that in terms of Adequacy of the English to Thai MI participants’ comprehension scores ranged from 2.4 to 3.45 out of 5, while Fluency received less than half of the maximum scores in all areas. In comparison, for the direction of …
A Study Of The Problems Encountered By Interpreters In Translating Criminal Case Examination Questions From Thai Into English, Brian Keith Cutshall
A Study Of The Problems Encountered By Interpreters In Translating Criminal Case Examination Questions From Thai Into English, Brian Keith Cutshall
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The official language used in the Thai judicial system is the Thai central dialect. All documentation and testimony must be submitted in this language. Because of this, all documentation in a foreign language that needs to be submitted to the court must first be translated into Thai. Additionally, non-proficient speakers of Thai (NPT’s) require the services of an interpreter to render their foreign language testimony into Thai during court proceedings. The goal of this research was to study and better understand the types of problems that interpreters in court have in interpreting criminal case examination questions from Thai into English. …
Automatic Subtitling And Machine Translation In Aiding English To Thai Simultaneous Interpretation, Nutdanai Sornchai
Automatic Subtitling And Machine Translation In Aiding English To Thai Simultaneous Interpretation, Nutdanai Sornchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
With the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and machine translation (MT) technology in recent years, their uses in simultaneous interpretation (SI) have been a subject of interest. This research, conducted to study these technologies in aiding the SI process, has four participants interpreted (English to Thai) three comparable speeches with automatic subtitling, with MT, and without subtitling. An audience then rated the interpretation renditions and answered a comprehension questionnaire. According to the participants, automatic subtitling allowed them to cross-check their translation, while MT provided a way to decrease the cognitive effort. According to the audience, automatic subtitling has a …
Smartphone-Tapping Vs Hand-Writing: A Comparative Study Of Note-Taking Alternatives For Consecutive Interpretation, Panuwat Sojaiwong
Smartphone-Tapping Vs Hand-Writing: A Comparative Study Of Note-Taking Alternatives For Consecutive Interpretation, Panuwat Sojaiwong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Tapping on a smartphone has expanded beyond texting, from interpersonal interaction to taking notes in an academic context. More specifically, consecutive interpreters, both novice and experienced, who are accustomed to smartphone tapping on a daily basis may be able to take notes on their smartphones. The study investigates the modern method of tapping on a smartphone as a note-taking alternative to the classic method of pen and paper. Six Thai interpreting students participated in a consecutive interpretation experiment. Participants were given the opportunity to practice both hand-writing and smartphone tapping for their consecutive interpretation tasks. The data was collected in …

The Use Of Asr-Cai Tool And Its Impact On Interpreters’ Performance During Simultaneous Interpretation, Pannapat Tammasrisawat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Ever since automatic speech recognition (ASR) was introduced as a means to improve the terminology lookup mechanism and reduce additional cognitive effort in performing a terminology query, many studies have been conducted to investigate the use of ASR-CAI tools in simultaneous interpretation (SI). However, few studies have implemented the process-oriented method in addition to the product-based method in analyzing how the use of ASR-CAI tools may affect the interpreting process. By using both product/process-oriented approaches, this paper set out to investigate the impact of ASR-CAI tool on interpreters’ overall performance. The results showed that the support of ASR-CAI tool led …

Using A Smart Phone To Learn Spanish: Does It Work And Will Students Use It?, Andrew J. Demil, Alysha Assaf, Ryan Cragun
The Coastal Review
Over time, mobile devices have penetrated the classroom, requiring new and beneficial ways to implement classroom instruction. Research suggests that Short Message Service (SMS) based instruction is an effective tool for acquiring second language (L2) vocabulary and idiom knowledge (Hayati, Jalilifar, & Mashhadi; Lu,). Additionally, studies have found that students believe that mobile learning (m-learning) is beneficial to acquiring a second language (Cavus & Ibrahim; Hayati, Jalilifar, & Mashhadi; Lu, 2008). This study examined whether m-learning can lead to Spanish vocabulary familiarity and if sentence comprehension outperforms reading definitions. Participants were 29 native English speakers studying Spanish as a second …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This paper investigates first the influences of ancient Chinese culture on Ezra Pound, and then Pound’s influence on the New Culture Movement of modern China (1917). It is a kind of circular journey of literary texts and theories from ancient China to the West and then back to China. This journey, or “circle model,” involves textual appropriation, variation, transformation and misunderstanding in every stage.

It proposes the term 穿越 (chuanyue, traverse), rather than communication or traveling theory, in order to probe into the complexity of the interaction, modification and transformation of western theories of Culture Industry and creative industries in China. The paper focuses on 1) issues of time lag or disjunction, in that it took more than half a century for the critique of Culture Industry to enter China; 2) divergent interpretations of Culture Industry with a strong critical edge of …

China Question Of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory, Zhijie Wu, Yuping Wang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
“China Question of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory” deals with how western postcolonial translation theory is read, interpreted and applied in China, as well as how the reception in China influences revision and development of the theory. Western postcolonial translation theory, though frequently quoted and highly influential in China, is sometimes incapable of effectively explaining Chinese translation practice and convincing Chinese readers. Based on the analysis of the encounter between postcolonial translation theory and China, three suggestions are proposed to revise translation theory so as to build a “greener,” healthier hetero-generative ecology of languages and cultures.
ترجمة الأدب العربي في الصين في السياق التاريخي والثقافي في العصر الحديث والمعاصر, Ma Tao
ترجمة الأدب العربي في الصين في السياق التاريخي والثقافي في العصر الحديث والمعاصر, Ma Tao
Al Jinan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This is a translation of Dr. Erika Almenara’s complete published collection of poetry. The original publications span a period of over twelve years of work, with books published in 2006, 2008, and 2018. The first book of poetry in this series of translations, Reino Cerrado (Closed Kingdom), explores the profound contemplations of life and how to turn those thoughts into words and put them on paper. We see images of nature, hear faint religious overtones, and feel the distress of a woman searching for a healthy relationship, and having little luck. Para evitar los rastros (To Avoid All Traces), the …

The Translator-Function: Translating Bande-Dessinée For The Anglophone Reader, Ryan C. Gomez
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis focuses on the question of translator roles in literary theory. I characterize these roles between positions that have traditionally been described by literary and philosophical theorists such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault. By examining the products of translation (French-language bandes-dessinées and their English translations), and considering critical literary and translation theories, I demonstrate the unique position held by translators and their work through the proposal of what I call the translator-function (modeled after Foucault’s author-function). The principal aim of this thesis is to problematize preconceived ideas about translators and to examine the unique position of the …

Scrivere Di Islam. Raccontare La Diaspora, Simone Brioni Dr., Shirin Ramzanali Fazel
Department of English Faculty Publications
Scrivere di Islam. Raccontare la diaspora (Writing About Islam. Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the …

The Haunting Parallel Amid Governmental Responses: Tlatelolco Massacre & The Covid-19 Pandemic, Chelsea Wepy
Publications and Research
The overall purpose of this analysis was to exemplify the parallels between the governmental responses to the Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968 and the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020. “Memorial de Tlatelolco” is a poem that was written by Mexican poet and activist, Rosario Castellanos in 1968 following the Tlatelolco Massacre. The findings of this research note the familiarity instilled in those suffering through the COVID-19 Pandemic by Castellanos' poem.

Interpreting As Ideologically-Structured Action: Collective Identity Between Activist Interpreters And Protesters, Mark A. Halley Phd, Nic
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
In this paper, I explore the work of the American Sign Language-English interpreters who volunteered in the 1988 Deaf President Now protest (DPN). Drawing from the construct of ideologically-structured action (Dalton 1994; Zald 2000), I frame the interpreters’ decisionmaking throughout the protest, showing how their beliefs about and relationships with deaf people shaped their actions. Further, I argue that the activist interpreters exhibited a collective identity (Polletta and Jasper 2001) with the deaf protesters, despite not being deaf themselves. I also discuss the integral role of interpreters to the protesters’ mission of challenging the existing power structure. To develop my …

Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman
Comparative Cultural Studies
Nimble Tongues is a collection of essays that continues Steven G. Kellman's work in the fertile field of translingualism, focusing on the phenomenon of switching languages. A series of investigations and reflections rather than a single thesis, the collection is perhaps more akin in its aims—if not accomplishment—to George Steiner’s Extraterritorial: Papers on Literature and the Language Revolution or Umberto Eco’s Travels in Hyperreality.
Topics covered include the significance of translingualism; translation and its challenges; immigrant memoirs; the autobiographies that Ariel Dorfman wrote in English and Spanish, respectively; the only feature film ever made in Esperanto; Francesca Marciano, an …
