Montemayor's "Diana": A Translation And Introduction, Roseanna M. Mueller Jan 1977

Montemayor's "Diana": A Translation And Introduction, Roseanna M. Mueller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Jorge de Montemayor's Los siete libros de la Diana (1559) was one of the more popular Renaissance pastoral romances. This Spanish pastoral romance written by a Castilianized Portuguese had many continuations. It influenced other pastoral works in England, and enjoyed a wide readership throughout Europe, as its many editions and translations witness. The Diana is a transitional work and an example of what writers of prose fiction were striving for in the middle of the 16th century. The Diana retained elements of the chivalric romance, integrated Petrarchan influences that had hitherto been reserved for the lyric, adhered to Neoplatonic love …

El Dualismo Cristiano En AdáN Buenosayres, Fernando NuñEz Garcia Jul 1976

El Dualismo Cristiano En AdáN Buenosayres, Fernando NuñEz Garcia

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Previous studies have taken Christianity for granted in this novel. To date, however, no inquiry has attempted to analyze its Christian elements. In this thesis, we are seeking to fill this lacuna.

First, we have noted that the Christian elements are presented in opposite pairs: body-soul, finite-infinite, etc. Next, we have brought out the relationship of these pairs to Christian tradition. This has made it possible to conclude that the source of such a polarity is to be found in the Creation. What in the Divine Mind was one became manifold. Hence, a tension arose between the manifold (that which …

La Poesia De Efraín Huerta, Ricardo D. Aguilar Apr 1976

La Poesia De Efraín Huerta, Ricardo D. Aguilar

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This dissertation is the first serious effort towards the evaluation of Efraín Huerta's poetry, and the defining of his place in Mexican letters. The introduction focuses on the lack of any biographical study and on the meager criticism that exists on his very important work. It proceeds to formulate a bio-bibliographical statement compiled from scattered materials in reviews and dictionaries of literature with the purpose of correcting that situation. The first chapter undertakes the structural analysis of the poet's work through the explaining of stratification in his verses, poems, and his books. Stratification is based upon the concept of simultaneity, …

The Japanese Translation Of The Book Of Mormon: A Study In The Theory And Practice Of Translation, Jiro Numano Jan 1976

The Japanese Translation Of The Book Of Mormon: A Study In The Theory And Practice Of Translation, Jiro Numano

Theses and Dissertations

English and Japanese are very different from each other in tems of their structures. And consequently no one would call the present translation of the Japanese Book of Mormon a low rank-bound translation.

However, a substantial amount of grammatical categories of English such as number, redundant subject for Japanese, pronominal expression, and the passive voice which is not used so often in Japanese as in English, are introduced in the translation. The improper placement of subject, verb and object also serves as a cause of foreign tones. Thus the present translation has more factors of Formal-Equivalence translation than those of …

Thematic Imagery In The Poetry Of AntóNio Nobre, Lana Frederica Moeller Harrigan May 1975

Thematic Imagery In The Poetry Of AntóNio Nobre, Lana Frederica Moeller Harrigan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In the poetry of António Nobre, essential themes are recurrent and interwoven, and there is a great degree of constancy in the images he creates for thematic purposes. Nature as it bears thematically on his poetry is the subject of Chapter I. The poet's predilect images from nature, the moon, the sea, trees, the wind, the seasons and time of day are all discussed with relation to theme. Chapter II deals with the imagery and thematics of color. White is by far the most frequently used, comprising 43.7% of all examples of color, and is thematically significant. The imagery associated …

Katherine Anne Porter : A Change In Her Mexican Perspective, Mario Paris-Fernandez Jan 1975

Katherine Anne Porter : A Change In Her Mexican Perspective, Mario Paris-Fernandez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Katherine Anne Porter regards Mexico as her "familiar country." lndeed, Mexico in the art of this gifted American writer is more important than generally believed for, as William Nance says, "Mexico entered into her earliest work as both motivating force and subject matter."

Miss Porter has traveled extensively in Mexico and lived there on several occasions. Her highly developed artistic sensibility has allowed her to gain more than a mere familiarity with the country, its inhabitants, and its history. Naturally, her deep knowledge of the culture is reflected in her artistic production, part of which is devoted exclusively to Mexico. …

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller Jan 1975

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The English Writer Alan Sillitoe is, to most Americans, a man of two books (or movies): Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (with Albert Finney); and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (with Tom Courtenay). Indeed, most Americans do not know that he has produced a book a year since 1959 (when The Long Distance-Runner came out), including eight other novels, three books of poems, two collections of short stories, one book of travel, one play, and one children's book. They know little about his life or the progress of his career, about his international connections or his present …

Myth And Reality In Hijo De Hombre, A Novel By Augusto Roa Bastos, David R. Gifford Dec 1974

Myth And Reality In Hijo De Hombre, A Novel By Augusto Roa Bastos, David R. Gifford

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The essence of Paraguayan reality, cloaked in myths since the days of the Conquest, is an enigma which, for the most part, has been elusive to the writer's pen. There is, however, one man, Augusto Roa Bastos, who has succeeded masterfully in capturing that essence and who has done so precisely through the revelation of both Paraguay's myths and her reality. His work is the highly complex narrative Hijo de hombre, winner in 1959 of the esteemed Losada prize in Buenos Aires.

The success of Roa's novel stems from a deeply felt commitment to his fellow Paraguayans against man's …

A Theory Of The Perception Of Character, Donna C. Brown Dec 1974

A Theory Of The Perception Of Character, Donna C. Brown

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, the critical term "character" is defined from a reader's perspective as a process involving three elements: (1) syntactical character, the printed words that delimit character in the order in which they occur; (2) spatial character, these printed words organized in the reader's mind into a pattern. These two together are called grammatical character; and (3) a mental image that results from reading these printed words.

Nuneaton Wreath-Laying, F.H.M. Fitzory Newdegate Jul 1974

Nuneaton Wreath-Laying, F.H.M. Fitzory Newdegate

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

I am delighted to be here this afternoon to lay the annual wreath at this ceremony, which was for so long and so happily associated with my mother. As a child I was not over-encouraged to reason the works of George Eliot, but I did, so to speak, grow up with her as part of the story of Arbury and the surrounding countryside, which she loved so much and which so greatly influenced her earlier works. It is not always easy to see someone who is part of one’s own background as a world figure, a universal spirit whose works …

EspañA En La Epoca De Los Dramas De Max Aub., Alicia Germany De Alarcon

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Max Aub, one of the three most outstanding novelists of the post Spanish Civil War, is known also as a story writer, poet, critic, and essayist. Aub is not as well known in the theater because almost all of his dramatic works were written while he was in exile. Some have been staged by groups of amateurs which have not reached the general public. Aub, German by ancestry, French by birth, Spanish by sentiments, and Mexican by recognition, has written an important group of works--in the technical as well as in the literary sense. As an author, he was compelled …

The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet Jun 1974

The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nonsense literature and nonsense poetry have provided release from the shackles of logic for centuries. But the greatest masters of English nonsense are Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Carroll gives, in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, the principles underlying a carefully-built structure. In Lewis Carroll's nonsense world, the creatures break the determinism of meaning and significance.

Nonsense can be defined by the following characteristics: a strong adherence to the concrete in every way possible in order to allow the intellect to be in complete control of its material and thus prevent reference; the elaboration of a pseudo-logic based …

The Plays Of DamiáN Salucio Del Poyo, James J. Jewell May 1974

The Plays Of DamiáN Salucio Del Poyo, James J. Jewell

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

It is not uncommon for authors or other artists to attain fame in their lifetimes and then fall into oblivion with the passage of time. In Spain this is especially true of some of the playwrights of the Golden Age, for there was a great proliferation of dramatists during this period. Damián Salucio del Poyo, a Murcian playwright, is one of these forgotten figures. During his lifetime Poyo was highly praised by his contemporaries who regarded him as one of the best dramatists at the beginning of the seventeenth century; however, he was all but forgotten by the end of …

Gertrude & Volumnia: Their Influences On Their Sons At The Climaxes Of The Plays, Laddawan Bunchoo May 1974

Gertrude & Volumnia: Their Influences On Their Sons At The Climaxes Of The Plays, Laddawan Bunchoo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The examination of the climaxes of the two plays Hamlet, and Coriolanus, illustrates that the two mothers, Gertrude and Volumnia, have destructive influences on their sons. The closet scene in Hamlet reflects that Gertrude's second marriage and her choice of Claudius shatter Hamlet's Idealization of her in the role of the faithful wife and the virtuous mother. Hamlet's inaction and destruction are caused in part by his mother's influence.

Volumnia's influence both shapes and destroys her son. She rears him as the embodiment of her chivalric ideal of nobility. The climactic scene in this play reveals that Coriolanus' …

Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson Jan 1974

Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Teacher education has too largely concerned itself with a study of schooling rather than a study of education. In the next generation, given the concerns that I’ve talked about, we’re going to have to look much more intensively, on the one hand, at how much human beings learn as biological creatures and, on the other hand, at all the cultural and legal constraints on learning that exist. We will look at education in industry, in the community, in community action programs, in the tribal council, education through ritual, and through play, as well as through public schooling. The job of …

O Tema Da Morte Na Poesia De CecíLia Meireles., Regina Igel Sep 1973

O Tema Da Morte Na Poesia De CecíLia Meireles., Regina Igel

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Thi1s dissertation attempts to analyze the importance of death in the poetic works of the contemporary Brazilian poetess, Cecília Meireles. This study stresses the literary means she used in order to express her feelings about death and the attitudes she assumed in the face of death. Her poetry shows a deep concern with the end of lite; death is portrayed in her works as 1) a mystery which defies human intelligence, 2) pain experienced by those who have lost thei1:-loved ones, and 3) as a point of disintegration which has to be accepted with serenity.
