Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson Jan 1979

Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Sets Knight's Tale in the tradition of political verse, and argues that the tale encourages peace in the domestic and foreign affairs of Chaucer's England. The hortatory, heroic style of the tale presents Theseus as a peace-making ideal, pertinent to the French wars of the time. The juxtaposition of the Miller's Tale with the Knight's Tale encourages placid relations with the peasant class.

Several critics, both neoclassic and modern, have observed that) as to kind, the Knight's Tale is an epic fiction. Characteristically, the poems we call medieval epics are what Ezra Pound also says an epic must be in …

Chicano Literature In Spanish: Roots And Content, Erlinda Viola Gonzales-Berry Aug 1978

Chicano Literature In Spanish: Roots And Content, Erlinda Viola Gonzales-Berry

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

One of the most patently visible facets of Chicanos' efforts to assert themselves through a form of cultural nationalism has been a burgeoning corpus of creative literature which, above all, has served as a vehicle of self-knowledge. In their task of accumulating evidence for a collective self-portrait, Chicano writers have explored their past, revitalized and mythesized their cultural values, indicted Anglo culture and confronted the question of what it means to be human. In this study I have examined the works of a small group of writers whose most distinguishing and isolatable feature is their use of Spanish as a …

Representative Women In The Narrative Works Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Jacqueline M. Guttmann Jul 1978

Representative Women In The Narrative Works Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Jacqueline M. Guttmann

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Emilia Pardo Bazán, a Spanish novelist of the nineteenth century, used her talents to portray women realistically. This dissertation describes her grasp of their psychology and the ways in which she discerns those differences between men and women which are sex-linked and those which are socially determined. Her novels and short stories are analyzed to define her views. The introduction sketches doña Emilia‘s own complex personality; then two antithetical currents of thought concerning women are traced through Spanish literature. The first part of this study depicts her best integrated female characters in all their variety and conveys the many differences …

Juan Goytisolo: Survival In Two Early Novels And Two Late Novels, Lois J. Shimmin Dogliani Apr 1978

Juan Goytisolo: Survival In Two Early Novels And Two Late Novels, Lois J. Shimmin Dogliani

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This dissertation examines survival in Goytisolo's two early novels, Juegos de manos (1954) and Duelo en el Paraíso (1955), and two late novels, Señas de identidad (1966) and Reivindicación del Conde don Julián (1970). The approach views survival as the novelist's central theme and also as a signficant factor in the technique of his artistic medium. The novel's struggle for survival as a contemporary art form--through change and growth in technique--is integrated with contemporary man's fight for personal survival. While other studies have concentrated on either specific themes or technical devices, this investigation offers a coordinated perspective of both thematic …

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

The Hollow Of Echoes, Kathleen Danker, Felix White Sr. Jan 1978

The Hollow Of Echoes, Kathleen Danker, Felix White Sr.

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The Hollow of Echoes is the result of collaboration between Mr. Felix White, Sr. and myself. Mr. White, who resides in Winnebago, Nebraska, is knowledgeable in many areas of traditional Winnebago culture including language, history, legends and law. During the spring of 1973, he recounted to me a number of Winnebago legends of which I made recordings. I have incorporated these legends into a fictional account of a present-day Winnebago grandfather using the stories to instruct his grandchildren in traditional ways of viewing situations they encounter in their daily lives. Almost all of the views of the grandfather in the …

The Problem Of Evil: The Interaction Of Philosophy And Fiction (1661-1715), Audrey Vivien Bull Dec 1977

The Problem Of Evil: The Interaction Of Philosophy And Fiction (1661-1715), Audrey Vivien Bull

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This dissertation analyzes trends in philosophy and the novel on the question of evil during the period 1661-1715. The problem was treated on three levels: cosmic, personal and social evil. Three questions dominate: Why does evil exist? From whence does it come? How can it be alleviated or eliminated? By the study of similarities and differences between the works of a philosopher and a novel, the dissertation shows how abstract ideas were rendered into concrete situations and how serious concepts were made palatable to a wide-spread audience through the sugar-coating of fiction. Chapter I gives a broad view of philosophies …

Photonuclear Activation At The Pantex Plant, Gilbert L. Rendon Dec 1977

Photonuclear Activation At The Pantex Plant, Gilbert L. Rendon

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This is a structuralist reading of the theatrical works of Henry de Montherlant. The genera I approach incorporates the theories of Claude Levi-Strauss, Ro land Barth es, Jean Piaget, Jean Rousset, and Leo Spitzer. Two major types of structure are examined: the interrelationship of characters and the interrelationship of ideas. Two theoretical mode Is are constructed. The first is a triadic mode I of the relationships among characters in tightly-knit communities, based upon the sociological theories of Georg Simmel and Theodore Cap low. The second is a semiotic model of the relationships between opposing ideas, based upon the carré sémiotique …

Santob's Debate Between The Pen And The Scissors, Clark A. Colahan May 1977

Santob's Debate Between The Pen And The Scissors, Clark A. Colahan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Critics of the rabbi Santob de Carrion's Proverbios morales have often remarked on the work's frequent juxtaposition of contradictory maxims. It has been further said that reversibility of ideas characterizes both its structure and the thinking of its author. Interpretations of the literary traditions from which such structure and thought may have sprung have differed sharply. This study examines Santob's major work in Hebrew, his Debate between the Pen and the Scissors, and demonstrates the close relation that exists between the Semitic literary tradition from which it comes and the Proverbios morales.

Through the assistance of Professor Jefim Schirmann of …
