Expanding Visual Resources: British Monuments For Humanities Courses, Natalie Thompson, Dr. Jane Gardner Hinckley Aug 2013

Expanding Visual Resources: British Monuments For Humanities Courses, Natalie Thompson, Dr. Jane Gardner Hinckley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Humanities professors face the difficulty of finding the visual resources necessary for specialized courses. Professors may not be able to find slides of specific monuments in university slide libraries or even reproductions of the monuments in texts. Yet in order to teach about these monuments effectively, the professor needs these images.

Walt Whitman, Winslow Homer, And The Civil War, Angela Dawn Lowe, Dr. George B. Handley Aug 2013

Walt Whitman, Winslow Homer, And The Civil War, Angela Dawn Lowe, Dr. George B. Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

According to Eric Sundquist, “the actual Civil War has been concealed under layers of comforting legends and nostalgic sentiments” and has been inaccurately portrayed as “a panorama of colorful uniforms, heroic deeds, noble purposes, and sword-and-roses courtships” (45). Walt Whitman and Winslow Homer willfully and purposefully contributed to this idealized picture of the Civil War. Typifying all soldiers as heroes, Christ figures who willingly gave their lives for the freedom of their people, Whitman overlooked the many soldiers who joined the army for money, who deserted after only weeks of training, and who feared death and missed home. Homer also …

Holy Ground: An Interpretive Study Of The Salt Lake Temple Landscape, Jeremy P. Call, Dr. George B. Handley Aug 2013

Holy Ground: An Interpretive Study Of The Salt Lake Temple Landscape, Jeremy P. Call, Dr. George B. Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Lying in the geographic heart of the Mormon faith, the Salt Lake Temple has become a popular icon for the Mormon Church throughout the world and has been the subject of numerous architectural and theological analyses. Architectural analyses often trace historical and stylistic precedents or explain the symbolism of the exterior in relation to Mormon doctrine. Yet the gardens of Temple Square, encompassing twenty-six acres of a site selected by God through the prophet Brigham Young, consecrated as holy ground by President Wilford Woodruff, and cherished by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have been neglected …

Prolegomenon To The Intercultural Study Of Self: A Lesson In Book-Making, Justin Halverson, Dr. Steven Sondrup

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the week of 4–8 October 1999, the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University in cooperation with the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies hosted a small conference dedicated to comparative concepts of self, especially with regard to the various firstperson narrative approaches to those concepts. The conference was attended by scholars from all parts of the globe: from the United States, Gerald Gillespie (Stanford University), Janet Walker (Rutgers University), Eugene Eoyang (Indiana University), J. Scott Miller (BYU), and Steven P. Sondrup (BYU); from the Netherlands, Mineke Schipper (Leiden University); from India, Amiya Dev (Vidyasagar University); from Brazil, …

Feminist And Marriage-Related Issues In Seventheenth Century French Fairy Tales, Susanna Allred Aug 2013

Feminist And Marriage-Related Issues In Seventheenth Century French Fairy Tales, Susanna Allred

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project studied the discussion of feminist and marriage-related issues in seventheenth century French fairy tales. Though Charles Perrault is now the most famous writer of fairy tales, he was part of a larger literary trend of fairy tale-writing. This literary vogue was dominated and actually started by female writers. Though Perrault’s tales are comparatively conservative in their discussion of social issues, his female contemporaries frequently used the fairy tale format to discuss their discontents with their society’s conception of the family as a political unit and women as pawns in struggles for dynastic succession and family wealth.

A Sixteenth Century Niobe In A Twentieth Century Short Story: Ovid’S Long Reach From Augustan Rome, Leslie Macfarlane, Dr. Stephen Bay Aug 2013

A Sixteenth Century Niobe In A Twentieth Century Short Story: Ovid’S Long Reach From Augustan Rome, Leslie Macfarlane, Dr. Stephen Bay

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The term “reception” defines the product of referring to or relying upon one work of literature or art within another. Anything from translating a work into a different language, reusing a well known title, quoting directly from a work, or writing in a meter typically associated with a certain work or author can be deemed a reception. In the late 1930’s or early 40’s Theodore Sturgeon, who would later gain recognition for his contributions to the science fiction genre, wrote a short story and gave the antagonist and the story the name “Niobe.” That decision advertises that the story is …

Danish 202 Curriculum Project, Kevin Jenson, Dr. Christpher Oscarson Aug 2013

Danish 202 Curriculum Project, Kevin Jenson, Dr. Christpher Oscarson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the most difficult aspects of teaching a foreign language course is finding materials that are in line with the methodology and learning objectives specific to the class being taught. In the case of languages that are more commonly taught, such as French or Spanish, there is a lot of sorting that needs to be done in order to find the right text. For languages that are less commonly taught, however, such as Danish, there are only a handful of resources available, and unfortunately, many of them are not designed for an American university education. Since the vast majority …

Ovid’S Poetic Voice In The Metamorphoses, Christopher Meldrum, Dr. Cecilia Peek Aug 2013

Ovid’S Poetic Voice In The Metamorphoses, Christopher Meldrum, Dr. Cecilia Peek

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Written around 8 A.D., the Metamorphoses by Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid) is considered a classic of both Roman and World culture. It holds a unique place in Classical literature, which has caused it to remain an object of focused interest in the academic community. Although Ovid declares it to be an epic, it nevertheless displays several striking differences in style and composition from traditional epics such as Virgil’s Aeneid and Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad. The text of the Metamorphoses is also intriguing to scholars because many of the myths it contains do not follow the traditional accounts given in other …

To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill Aug 2013

To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Paul's "doctrine" of election has remained a controversial and enigmatic topic for centuries. Few studies, however, have approached Paul's doctrine through the context of Second Temple Judaism. This study examines Paul's view of election through the lens of Second Temple Jewish texts written prior to 70 CE. In doing so, it is argued that the best framework through which to view Paul's discussion of election is through a primarily corporate model of election. While such a model is rooted in Judaism, Paul departs from his Jewish contemporaries in arguing that the locus of election is in God's Messiah, Jesus.

Le Développement Du Moi Et Le Procédé Thérapeutique Dans Les Œuvres De Chrétien De Troyes, Clément Guillaume Jul 2013

Le Développement Du Moi Et Le Procédé Thérapeutique Dans Les Œuvres De Chrétien De Troyes, Clément Guillaume

Dissertations and Theses

While we can easily acknowledge that many aspects the texts written by Chrétien de Troyes have been studied and discussed through the centuries, it is always possible to apply a new reading to the author's work. Like many authors of the same time period, the author of Le Conte du graal and LeChevalier de la charrette was not only writing for the audience of his time but was also openly targeting an audience set in a different century and social context. This timeless aspect of Chrétien's work is part of what makes his texts intricate and still relevant to this …

Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson Jul 2013

Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore how memory functions ecologically in the poetry of Tomas Tranströmer. The term ecology is useful because of its connotative associations with the natural world as well as its broader definition of being a network of relationships as they function within and relate to their environment. Throughout his oeuvre, Tranströmer positions memory as being an external presence with which he interacts primarily because he honors it as a living being and he feels a poetic responsibility to it. As such, he grapples with the challenges of representation, particularly the limitations of language. Ultimately, …

Speaking For Himself: Odysseus And Rhetoric In Sophocles' Philoctetes, Christian Wiggo Axelgard Jul 2013

Speaking For Himself: Odysseus And Rhetoric In Sophocles' Philoctetes, Christian Wiggo Axelgard

Theses and Dissertations

In order to reconcile the deus ex machina at the end of Sophocles' Philoctetes with the actions of the rest of the play, this project analyzes the role of Odysseus within the play with special attention to rhetoric. By considering the character of Odysseus as a complex construct referencing both literary and historical contexts, this study suggests that Neoptolemus in fact errs in siding with Philoctetes to the degree that he does by the tragedy's end. The themes of the play involving Philoctetes and Neoptolemus then become warnings against inappropriate emotional responses, again consistent with Heracles' advice in the deus …

Tokuya Higashigawa's After-Dinner Mysteries: Unusual Detectives In Contemporary Japanese Mystery Fiction, Jessica Claire Kindler Jul 2013

Tokuya Higashigawa's After-Dinner Mysteries: Unusual Detectives In Contemporary Japanese Mystery Fiction, Jessica Claire Kindler

Dissertations and Theses

The detective fiction (tantei shōsetsu) genre is one that came into Japan from the West around the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868), and soon became wildly popular. Again in recent years, detective fiction has experienced a popularity boom in Japan, and there has been an outpouring of new detective fiction books as well as various television and movie adaptations. It is not a revelation that the Japanese detective fiction genre, while rife with imitation and homage to Western works, took a dramatic turn somewhere along the line, away from celebrated models like Poe, Doyle, and Christie, and developed into …

Review Of Janine Barchas, Matters Of Fact In Jane Austen: History, Location, And Celebrity, Laura White Jul 2013

Review Of Janine Barchas, Matters Of Fact In Jane Austen: History, Location, And Celebrity, Laura White

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Janine Barchas’s thought-provoking study of Austen’s naming practices unearths a wealth of historical antecedents for Austen’s characters and posits an Austen whose gamesmanship with the names of persons and places rivals the knowingness and playfulness of James Joyce. In earlier decades, such a highly ambitious and wide-reaching work could not have been accomplished except through protracted antiquarian research. Web scholarship, however, has made it possible for Barchas to uncover in a relatively short time a remarkable array of the many interconnected historical figures bearing such names as Wentworth, Darcy, Vernon, Ferrars, Allen, and Dashwood whose heroic exploits, political machinations, tragic …

Style, Discourse, And The Completion Of The Vernacular Style In Modern Japanese Literature, Jacob Zan Adachi Lee Jun 2013

Style, Discourse, And The Completion Of The Vernacular Style In Modern Japanese Literature, Jacob Zan Adachi Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Many histories of modern Japanese literature see the "completion" of the modern vernacular style in the writings of Shiga Naoya (1883--1971), Mushakōji Saneatsu (1885--1976) and Takamura Kōtarō (1883--1956). Why and how this critical-historical perception of stylistic normalcy arose and still continues is better understood, I propose, through a close reading of key texts that identifies instances and patterns of creative manipulation of-as opposed to mere determination by or complicity with-certain philosophical, social, and historical discourses. How this creative manipulation plays out varies in prose and poetry and from text to text. In Mushakōji's Omedetaki hito (1911; The Simpleton), temporal and generic …

Histrionic Translation : A Methodology For Promoting The Translator's Inter-Subjectivity As Co-Producer, Fei Yue Tsang Jun 2013

Histrionic Translation : A Methodology For Promoting The Translator's Inter-Subjectivity As Co-Producer, Fei Yue Tsang

Lingnan Theses

This thesis will focus on Ezra Pound’s poem, Histrion, its associations with Stanislavskian method acting and their interface with translation studies. The title of “Histrion” is derived from the Latin word for an actor and Pound clearly wishes to suggest strong parallels between the voice of the poet and the voice of the actor. The work evokes a clairvoyant state of heightened consciousness achieved by the poet, in which he melds the subjectivities of the modern writer and the “souls of all men great” (earlier poets such as Dante and Villon) in a translucent flame of fused …

Methods Of Manuscript Analysis For The Recovery Of Lost Text, Claire Monson, Dr. Roger Mcfarlane

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my application for an ORCA Grant was to collaborate with Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 950: Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, located in Hamburg, Germany. Using their resources and the expertise of Professor Roger T. Macfarlane, we were able to make important movement forward in the research surrounding a medieval manuscript in the holdings of BYU’s Special Collections.

Russian Demographics, Mack Whitehead, Dr. Tony Brown Jun 2013

Russian Demographics, Mack Whitehead, Dr. Tony Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of the project was to establish correlation between a Russian person’s demographics, their emotional views and reactions regarding nuclear threats in 1999 and 2012. Research will include the interrupting of the data that is already present, and research will include looking into the political establishments in 1999. The benefits of the research are: establishing an understanding between nations and being able to view the post-Soviet Russian mindset concerning nuclear war.

The Impact Of Different Learning Styles On Language Study And The Formation Of Long Term Memory, Benjamin Black, Dr. Masakazu Watabe Jun 2013

The Impact Of Different Learning Styles On Language Study And The Formation Of Long Term Memory, Benjamin Black, Dr. Masakazu Watabe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my ORCA project has been to research different methods of language study and ultimately shed light on the method of study that will best engage the student in the target language, keep their motivation to study as high as possible and result in efficient storage of studied materials into the long term memory where it will be available for later retrieval. Through studying the effectiveness of different types of foreign language study my hope is to facilitate a faster and deeper learning of a foreign language by students perusing secondary languages.

Collecting Folklore, Trent Leinenbach, Dr. Stephen Tuttle Jun 2013

Collecting Folklore, Trent Leinenbach, Dr. Stephen Tuttle

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Our purpose in collecting folklore was to examine what happens to a society when the people can no longer identify themselves by nationality. Transylvania is a particularly good case study, because the borders have been disputed between Hungarians and Romanians essentially for as long as both nations have existed—so you’ve had plenty of time for national borders to sink deep into the social consciousness and subconscious. There have been generations of tradition, folklore, and education to instill a strong sense of nation-and-boundary-based identity. Within the borders of Hungary, there was a real sense of “Being Hungarian,” and a real sense …

Hope Rises In The Leprosy Colonies Of India: Examining The Mission And Success Of Rising Star Outreach, Kelsey Elayne Holloway Murdoch, Dr. Francesca Lawson Jun 2013

Hope Rises In The Leprosy Colonies Of India: Examining The Mission And Success Of Rising Star Outreach, Kelsey Elayne Holloway Murdoch, Dr. Francesca Lawson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I began my quest to graduate with University Honors during my freshman year at Brigham Young University. I was encouraged by friends, family, and professors, and I loved the challenge of the Honors Courses and the cultural exploration stimulated by the Great Works requirements. But like nearly every student involved in BYU’s Honors Program, the thesis looming as the last hurdle before graduation was a daunting and baffling task. I wanted to write a thesis that would do more than check off a final requirement and sit on a special shelf in the Harold B. Lee Library, honor though that …

Giving Birth To Empowerment: Motherhood And Autonomy In Greek Tragedy, Maggie Sharon Hoyt Jun 2013

Giving Birth To Empowerment: Motherhood And Autonomy In Greek Tragedy, Maggie Sharon Hoyt

Theses and Dissertations

The Greek tragedies of Classical Athens frequently portray mothers in central roles, but despite this significance, the relationship between mother and child has long been overshadowed in secondary scholarship by the relationship between husband and wife. This study demonstrates the direct relationship between a female character's active possession of her children and her autonomy, or her ability to act in her own interests, in three plays of Euripides: Electra, Medea, and Ion. In general, women who internalize their ownership of their children, expressed on stage both in word and action, have greater influence over the men around them and the …
