Orphic Allusions In Horace’S Odes 3.4, David K. Shelley, William Tortorelli Sep 2013

Orphic Allusions In Horace’S Odes 3.4, David K. Shelley, William Tortorelli

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 23 B.C. Horace published three books of Odes. The longest of these poems, Odes 3.4, has been the object of much scholarly attention, largely because of its complexity. In approaching this closely-studied poem I have sought to examine a facet which has gone virtually untouched by the scholarly literature thus far: the poem’s allusions to the mythological figure Orpheus. A musician and poet of legendary power, Orpheus was able to control nature and even overpower death with his bewitching song. Though he is never explicitly mentioned in the text, a number of ideas and themes associated with Orpheus are …

Það Verður Kannski Ekki Ferð Um Fjöll: Developing Resources For Teaching Icelandic As A Foreign Language, Friðrik Rafn Guðmundsson, Dr. Christopher Oscarson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When my wife and I began studying at BYU in the spring of 2002, I approached the director of the Scandinavian Studies Program, Dr. Steven Sondrup, about the possibility of teaching Icelandic at BYU.

Alessandro Manzoni’S Role In The Rise Of European Romanticism, Kimberly Mays, Dr. Larry Peer Sep 2013

Alessandro Manzoni’S Role In The Rise Of European Romanticism, Kimberly Mays, Dr. Larry Peer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Alessandro Manzoni, one of the great Italian authors studied worldwide, is best known for his novel, The Betrothed. However, he wrote many other works that deserve careful study as well. While he is studied heavily in Italy, Manzoni often gets pushed aside in traditional American educations. The purpose of our project was to examine other works and correspondence in the context of his role in the beginnings of European Romanticism.

The Fruits Of Athena’S Gift, Rachel E. Dollahite, Dr. Roger Macfarlane Sep 2013

The Fruits Of Athena’S Gift, Rachel E. Dollahite, Dr. Roger Macfarlane

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Olive tree cultivation and olive oil production was a fundamental aspect of life for ancient civilizations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and the industry continues to form a vital part of life for the people living in those climates that are favorable to olive trees. My project was in connection with the Apolline Project headed by Dr. Roger Macfarlane of BYU and Girolamo Ferdinando De Semone of Instituto de Suor Orsola Benincasa in Naples, which is conducting an archeological project of a villa rustica on the Northern slopes of Mt Vesuvius. I sought to learn more about the production of olive …

Violence And Sexuality In The Art Of Artemesia Gentileschi, Elisa Zavala, Dr. Steve Bule Sep 2013

Violence And Sexuality In The Art Of Artemesia Gentileschi, Elisa Zavala, Dr. Steve Bule

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Dynamism, vibrance, movement and sumptuous color all define the art of the Southern Baroque period. Throughout my study of Art History this period has been the focus of my interest, therefore the opportunity to travel about Italy and Spain was a prime experience to delve deeper into the works and life histories of the artists of the Southern Baroque. I found that simply being surrounded by the environment and the people that influenced the artists of this era took me to a different level of understanding. My main subject of study while in Italy was the artist Artemesia Gentileschi. The …

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund Sep 2013

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The study of bilingual quotations, made possible by this grant, has led me into a number of fascinating, related sidetracks which have been very little studied, especially since the waning of the French school of literature compareè. I have taken the time to study some of these sidetracks since they are relevant to the phenomenon I proposed to study. Others I have been able only to marvel at and reserve for future study.

New Voices In The North The Prospect Of Post-National Identity In Scandinavia, Andrew Christensen, Dr. Christopher Oscarson Sep 2013

New Voices In The North The Prospect Of Post-National Identity In Scandinavia, Andrew Christensen, Dr. Christopher Oscarson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Europe needs a new political identity. Politicians, political scientists, and philosophers are all clamoring for a change in the definition of European community. Without an emotional glue to bind them together, many fear the noble purpose of the EU’s supranational project will stagnate in a past puddle called the nation-state. My purpose in this project has been to find a new ethos for European identity.

Nourish Tomorrow’S Generations, Karla Passey De Bustamante, Dr. Mark Grover Sep 2013

Nourish Tomorrow’S Generations, Karla Passey De Bustamante, Dr. Mark Grover

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Society without basic family life is without foundation and will disintegrate into nothingness. Our political institutions…cannot rescue us if our basic institution, the family, is not intact. ”

Excavation On The North Slope Of Vesuvius: Establishing A Chronology, Kristina Sycamore, Dr. Roger Macfarlane Sep 2013

Excavation On The North Slope Of Vesuvius: Establishing A Chronology, Kristina Sycamore, Dr. Roger Macfarlane

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Centuries of excavation around the south slope of Vesuvius has proven the volcanic eruption of 79 AD to be a boon to Roman archaeology and history. As multiple sites have been uncovered, archaeologists have viewed a snapshot in time. As a result, a great deal has been learned about the city of Pompeii and the surrounding area. It has become an essential resource and textbook example which Roman studies can scarcely avoid. However, for as much as this area surrounding Vesuvius has been uncovered, documented, and researched, the North Slope of the volcano has been largely ignored. Current excavations are …

Video Games And Citizenship, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Video Games And Citizenship, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Video Games and Citizenship" Jeroen Bourgonjon and Ronald Soetaert argue that digitization problematizes and broadens our perspective on culture and popular media and that this has important ramifications for our understanding of citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert respond to the call of Gert Biesta for the contextualized study of young people's practices by exploring a particular aspect of digitization that affects young people, namely video games. They explore the new social spaces which emerge in video game culture and how these spaces relate to community building and citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert also examine whether these social spaces can …

Rhetorical Analysis Of Literary Culture In Social Reading Platforms, Joachim Vlieghe, Kris Rutten Sep 2013

Rhetorical Analysis Of Literary Culture In Social Reading Platforms, Joachim Vlieghe, Kris Rutten

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Rhetorical Analysis of Literary Culture in Social Reading Platforms" Joachim Vlieghe and Kris Rutten present a case study of the discourse surrounding literary phenomena that are emerging within social media. The case study is part of a methodological exploration within literacy studies whereby the social media's transformative effects on literary literacies are studied by focusing on language as symbolic and situated action. Vlieghe and Rutten have identified unique social reading platforms based on a prolonged study of the social media environment. The analysis of the developers' discourse on social reading platforms shows how developers are formulating new …

Literature, Digital Humanities, And The Age Of The Encyclopedia, Gunther Martens Sep 2013

Literature, Digital Humanities, And The Age Of The Encyclopedia, Gunther Martens

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Literature, Digital Humanities, and the Age of the Encyclopedia" Gunther Martens takes his cue from Robert Musil's novel The Man without Qualities in order to discuss the way in which literature relates to new developments in technology. Martens argues that it is useful to situate some of the fears accompanying literature's renewed (and debated) exposure to media and technology against the background of a similar discussions earlier: the historical perspective allows to identify and link three specific discourses underpinning the debate, namely: education, rhetoric, and the concept of the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia and encyclopedic literature comprise and …

Using New Media In Teaching Greek Roma Students, Fenia Frangoulidou Sep 2013

Using New Media In Teaching Greek Roma Students, Fenia Frangoulidou

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Using New Media in Teaching Greek Roma Students" Fenia Frangoulidou discusses the use of media material as a supplementary teaching tool in a Roma classroom. Since 2011, Aristotle University has been running a European Union funded project that deals with a wide range of supportive measures for Roma students. Sociologists, social workers, and educators are the primary participants responsible for its implementation. In her study Frangoulidou discusses gender relations and racism and presents an analysis of the participation and interaction of six high school students in a mixed class of twenty-eight students. The purpose of the study …

About The Destruction, Continuation, And Transformation Of Art, Frank Maet Sep 2013

About The Destruction, Continuation, And Transformation Of Art, Frank Maet

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "About the Destruction, Continuation, and Transformation of Art" Maet offers an answer to the question raised by Arthur C. Danto's thesis how to discern art from non-art? Maet considers art from the perspective of a technologically mediated reality and he distinguishes three different views on contemporary visual art: the destruction, the continuation, and the transformation of art. Maet considers these three artistic views as different strategies to deal with our current technological condition and evaluates the merits of each of them. He argues that our thoroughly designed reality turns the strategy of artistic destruction into a dangerous …

Perspectives On Literary Reading And Book Culture, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Perspectives On Literary Reading And Book Culture, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Perspectives on Literary Reading and Book Culture" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert provide a narrative framework for analyzing literary scholars' argumentation in the debate on literature and the humanities. Starting from MacIntyre's narrative description of epistemic "crises" they analyze the stories authors construct and the positions they take and ascribe to others within larger developing (grand) narratives on the value and function of literary reading. Both traditional narratives and new alternative (i.e., enlarged) narratives are discussed in how they set up and frame the argument and how they create dichotomies.

Reading, Literacy, And Education, Mikko Lehtonen Sep 2013

Reading, Literacy, And Education, Mikko Lehtonen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Reading, Literacy, and Education" Mikko Lehtonen outlines a contextual approach to literacy. He asks how the changing relations of culture and economy, transformation of nation states and national cultures and changing notions concerning affect and cognition, transform notions of literacy and reading. Relying on the results of a recent Finnish research project on new reading communities and new ways of reading, Lehtonen highlights substantial continuities in the reading habits of the so called Google generation when compared to other generations of readers. Print media is not, however, connected self-evidently to cognitive reading among the said generation. Lehtonen …

Rhetoric, Citizenship, And Cultural Literacy, Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Rhetoric, Citizenship, And Cultural Literacy, Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Rhetoric, Citizenship, and Cultural Literacy" Kris Rutten and Ronald Soetaert start from concerns in contemporary educational debates about a growing lack of civic literacy. These complaints are raised both in the public sphere, in institutions of pedagogy, and in scholarship about the form, content, and function of civic literacy and civic education. Although there is an ongoing debate about the alleged decrease of political interest and the current state of civic literacy, it is clear that civic education has become an important focus of different governmental initiatives. Rutten and Soetaert aim to move away from a straightforward …

Integrating Social Media In Education, Hadewijch Vanwynsberghe, Pieter Verdegem Sep 2013

Integrating Social Media In Education, Hadewijch Vanwynsberghe, Pieter Verdegem

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Integrating Social Media in Education" Hadewijch Vanwynsberghe and Pieter Verdegem propose a framework in order to integrate social media literacy in an educational setting. In today's networked society students are new media users and hence the relevance in curricula to include social media literacy. Vanwynsberghe and Verdegem propose a multidimensional conceptual framework of social media literacy that includes the practical, cognitive, and affective competencies needed to deal with information of social media, to communicate with others through social media, to create content on social media, and to handle the consequences related to these three activities. On the …

Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Digitizing The Middle Ages, Roberta Capelli Sep 2013

Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Digitizing The Middle Ages, Roberta Capelli

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Practical and Theoretical Implications of Digitalizing the Middle Ages" Roberta Capelli discusses scholarship about and the teaching of medieval culture in digital humanities. While every medieval manuscript is an individual entity, displaying a series of unique and unrepeatable material, structural and aesthetic characteristics, digital devices are able to generate only two-dimensional photographic reproductions. However, the digital medium brings about some major improvements in the study — and teaching — of medieval manuscripts because the hypertextual nature of its applications allows us to analyse simultaneously synchronic and the diachronic dynamics. From a theoretical point of view, the difference …

Pencitraan Bangsa Jerman Dalam Novel Generation Golf, Desti Nur Aini, Dudy Syafruddin

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This research aims to describe the various stereotypes, prejudices, and ethnocentrism that appear in the characters of the novel Generation Golf. A qualitative approach was applied in this research. The note-reading technique was used for data collection, and the data were analyzed using domain analysis. The results indicate that various forms of stereotypes, prejudices, and ethnocentric attitudes are present. The stereotypes identified include both negative and positive types; the prejudices appear in the form of negative feelings, beliefs, and actions; and ethnocentric attitudes are expressed through the attribution of German culture in comparison with other nations.

Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Case Study, Maseria De Carolis, Rosalie Sharp, Dr. Roger Mcfarlane Aug 2013

Conservation Of Archaeological Sites: A Case Study, Maseria De Carolis, Rosalie Sharp, Dr. Roger Mcfarlane

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The original purpose of my research was to develop a conservation plan for Maseria de Carolis (MDC), an archaeological site on the north slope of Mt. Vesuvius, Italy. Professional conservation of archaeological sites is a relatively new area of study. While conservation principles were first discussed in the 19th century, it was not until the 20th and 21st centuries that real steps were taken in developing principles for the conservation of structures, and conservation of structures became its own official sub-group of conservation, determined by the American Institute of Conservation (Matero 1993, 1). Because this sub-group is so new, codes …

The Declaration Of Independence And Early American Religious Rhetoric From The Puritan Political Sermons, Ryan D. Nelson, Dr. Neal Lambert Aug 2013

The Declaration Of Independence And Early American Religious Rhetoric From The Puritan Political Sermons, Ryan D. Nelson, Dr. Neal Lambert

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For this work, I attempted to look closer at the influence that the early Puritan political sermons had upon the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Although an interesting topic to study in general, I found it necessary to consistently revise my research to become more specific. Since the Puritan political sermons are hard to come by, I analyzed the political sermons from the best compilation up to date; that from Sandoz. 1

Looking Back On Revolution: Post-Revolutionary Political Sentiment As Depicted In The Francophone Literature Of Modern Tunisia, Quinn Mecham, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson Aug 2013

Looking Back On Revolution: Post-Revolutionary Political Sentiment As Depicted In The Francophone Literature Of Modern Tunisia, Quinn Mecham, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I began this research project with the intention of briefly surveying all of the major literature of post-revolutionary Francophone North Africa and extracting the domestic political themes from each text. I soon realized that this was an extraordinarily difficult if not impossible task for several reasons: 1) The corpus of texts is extremely large and without adequate bibliography; 2) The corpus of texts is largely unavailable with many relevant texts out of print; 3) The political themes treated in these texts are not ordinarily accessible through brief survey because of their gothic, abstract, and deeply symbolic nature.

Swedish 202 Curriculum Packet, Adam Balinski Aug 2013

Swedish 202 Curriculum Packet, Adam Balinski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For my ORCA project, I said I would assemble 42-48 activities Swedish language learning activities to enhance the curriculum for BYU’s Swedish 202 course. I created 46 and adapted seven others for a total of 53. I planned on 12-15 quizzes, but 10 turned out to be more appropriate for the semester. I planned on 3 tests, and I created 3 written and oral tests, as well as a final. Additionally, I organized readings and made dozens of blackboard homework assignments. I assembled all of the above materials into a well-organized compact disk, which Professor Oscarson reviewed. Professor Oscarson was …

An Introduction To The Historical Development And Doctrinal Contributions Of Joseph Smith’S Revision Of The Bible With German Translation Of Key Revised Passages [In German], David Charles, Dr. David Seely

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The aim of this project was to produce, in German, a substantial piece of writing on the Joseph Smith Translation for the benefit of LDS and non-LDS interested in the JST. To date, there is virtually no literature available on the JST in German, nor have the Prophet’s revised passages ever been translated and published in German. The general outline of my study is as follows:

Renaissance Humanism And The Motets Of Josquin Des Prez, Jennifer Smith Black, Dr. Joseph Parry, Dr. Harrison Powley Aug 2013

Renaissance Humanism And The Motets Of Josquin Des Prez, Jennifer Smith Black, Dr. Joseph Parry, Dr. Harrison Powley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Renaissance humanism was the central philosophy and ordering principle of the era. It had a profound influence on all the art and philosophy of the time. It is easy to see humanism translated into painting and architecture, but much more difficult to find it in Renaissance music. Since humanism was such a pervasive influence, however, it must have had as significant an effect on Renaissance music as it did on the other arts. Finding the link between humanism and music in the Renaissance was my goal in this research. To do so, I focused on the life and works of …

“Ich Heirate Grundsetzlich Nicht:” The Rejection Of The Feminine And The Failure Of Individuation In Max Frisch’S Homo Faber, Jared E. Berg, Thomas G. Plummer Aug 2013

“Ich Heirate Grundsetzlich Nicht:” The Rejection Of The Feminine And The Failure Of Individuation In Max Frisch’S Homo Faber, Jared E. Berg, Thomas G. Plummer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The novel Homo Faber by the Swiss author Max Frisch is an important post-war work that describes the psychic tragedy resulting from the denial of myth, beauty, and the feminine by a mind rooted too firmly in reason and logic. It is a story of the psychic separation and the spiritual demise which comes from this denial. Considering the dense mythic and psychological content of the novel, it is surprising that so little has been written about it using an archetypal approach and the theories of Carl Jung. This is even more surprising since Frisch himself attended some of Jung’s …
