Veiled Movements In The Vale Of Esthwaite, Jack Vespa Jan 2014

Veiled Movements In The Vale Of Esthwaite, Jack Vespa

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The Vale of Esthwaite (1787), Wordsworth's first sustained effort at original composition, was first 1940 by Ernest De Selincourt in Poetical Works of Wordsworth as an example of the juvenilia. Among scholars who have treated the De Selincourt version of the poem, Geoffrey Hartman's account in Wordsworth's Poetry, 1787-1814 is the fullest, which argues that The Vale of Esthwaite turns upon the mind of a poet enthralled by nature despite signs that his imagination may well be independent of nature (76-89). Other treatments of De Selincourt's edition appeared in F. W. Bateson, Paul Sheats, Thomas Weiskel, James Averill, Jonathan Wordsworth, …

The Lord Of The Rings And The Weight Of Two Worlds: An Exploration Of Faith In Fantasy, Danielle Myers Jan 2014

The Lord Of The Rings And The Weight Of Two Worlds: An Exploration Of Faith In Fantasy, Danielle Myers

Honors Projects

This project is two-fold. The first section attempts to determine what it is that makes Tolkien’s writing, specifically within The Lord of the Rings, stand out against other Christian fantasy, particularly within modern evangelical culture. The purpose of this is to determine how he uses faith within his fantasy differently, and makes that faith-based writing meaningful to his readers without leaving them feeling preached-at. The second section is an excerpt of my own novel, The Weight of Two Worlds, in which I have attempted to use Tolkien’s methods to incorporate faith in my fantasy writing.

Feminicidios En Cd. Juárez: Sombras Del Evanescente Olvido; Luces De Lucha, Fuerza Y Resistencia, Amber Ramirez

Honors Theses

Situating Digital Archives, Michelle R. Warren

Dartmouth Scholarship

This essay is the introduction to an essay collection about the Middle English Prose Brut manuscript purchased by Dartmouth College in 2006. I consider how the competing pressures of access and preservation condition scholarship in medieval studies. I suggest several analogies between the digital humanities in general, digital philology in medieval studies, and the historical practices of medieval writers: hacking, dark archive, and prosthesis.

El Wavering Imaginativo Y La Conciencia Imaginante En Los Cuentos De Marvel Moreno Y Angela Carter, Alejandra Olarte Jan 2014

El Wavering Imaginativo Y La Conciencia Imaginante En Los Cuentos De Marvel Moreno Y Angela Carter, Alejandra Olarte

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation, I explore the short stories of Colombian writer Marvel Moreno and English writer Angela Carter. I propose that the authors' works share a dual conceptualization of the notion of imagination -- imaginative wavering and imagining consciousness. These conceptualizations constitute interpretative frameworks to comparatively examine textual strategies and themes within the authors' works of fiction. A fundamental characteristic of both imaginative wavering and imagining consciousness is movement. With the former, movement implies a constant oscillation between intradiegetic reality and rational thinking, as exposed in the stories. With the latter, movement entails the act of grasping the reality that …

Creating A New Literature: Shimazaki Toson's Poetry And The Japanese Literary Reform Movement, Grace E. Yon Jan 2014

Creating A New Literature: Shimazaki Toson's Poetry And The Japanese Literary Reform Movement, Grace E. Yon

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This research project shows how the poetry of writer Shimazaki Tōson (1872-1943) influenced Japanese literary and language reform movements during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although Tōson's fiction has often been the focus of critical studies and research, the impact his poetry had on these reform movements and on the shape of modern Japanese literature tends to be overlooked. In this paper, I show the importance of these overlooked works by examining a wide range of Tōson's poems and focusing on the way that they blend classical Japanese natural themes and rhythm, most commonly a 5-7-5 or related …

Decadent Wealth, Degenerate Morality, Dominance, And Devotion: The Discordant Iconicity Of The Rich Mountain Of Potosí, Claudia A. Cornejo Happel Jan 2014

Decadent Wealth, Degenerate Morality, Dominance, And Devotion: The Discordant Iconicity Of The Rich Mountain Of Potosí, Claudia A. Cornejo Happel

Publications

The rich mountain of Potosí, with its famed silver mines, has commanded the attention of Europeans, creoles (Americans of Spanish descent), and indigenous Andeans since the Spanish colonizers of Peru were made aware of its existence in 1545. Soon after its discovery, the rich mountain was represented in a variety of written and visual texts created by writers and artists from the Andes, Spain, and other parts of Europe. Independent of its physical form, in these representations the rich mountain assumed a discursive meaning, functioning as an icon that, depending on the context, represented abstract ideas of wealth, immorality, dominance, …

Rebirth And The Body: Ca Conrad And The Book Of Frank, Sean Hennessey Jan 2014

Rebirth And The Body: Ca Conrad And The Book Of Frank, Sean Hennessey

Anthós

There are many ways to look at the word "body." It can signify a physical body or a body of work; it can be the framework of a text (the body of the piece) or it can represent an organized group of people (a regulatory body). Taken as a whole, each of these facets of the word seem to signify a singularity that is created by the collective sum of its parts—the body is made up of limbs, trunk and head; a body of work is a collection of an artist’s output; the body of a text is made up …

[Introduction To] Escrituras A Ras De Suelo: Crónica Latinoamericana Del Siglo Xx, Marcela Aguilar, Claudia Darrigrandi, Mariela Méndez, Antonia Viu Jan 2014

[Introduction To] Escrituras A Ras De Suelo: Crónica Latinoamericana Del Siglo Xx, Marcela Aguilar, Claudia Darrigrandi, Mariela Méndez, Antonia Viu

Bookshelf

Anxious Seas: Reading Affect In Dazai And Murdoch, Joseph B. Lubitz Jan 2014

Anxious Seas: Reading Affect In Dazai And Murdoch, Joseph B. Lubitz

Honors Papers

This paper advances a re-reading of psychoanalytic “anxiety” as it is constructed through the modern novel, invoking contemporary affect theory, and finding an origin in the Heideggerian notions of Stimmung, Unheimlich and Angst. Looking at two works at the margins of the period and genre of the 20th Century modern novel that both share a fascination with introspective male protagonists--a Japanese “I-novel” called No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku) by Dazai Osamu, and The Sea, The Sea, by British writer Iris Murdoch--reveals a peculiar aesthetic questioning of subject and object specific to these works’ varied usages of ekphrasis and fascination with …

Eye For The Gap: Frenzy, Liberty, And The Nietszchean Chorus In Conor Mcpherson's The Weir And Shining City, Frances Krieg Jan 2014

Eye For The Gap: Frenzy, Liberty, And The Nietszchean Chorus In Conor Mcpherson's The Weir And Shining City, Frances Krieg

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study situates The Weir and Shining City by Conor McPherson as embodying elements of Dionysian aesthetics as elucidated by Friedrich Nietzsche. Working through the lenses of Samuel Beckett’s linguistic philosophy and the premium of theater as established by Nietzsche, Artaud, and Brecht, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate how McPherson pierces the boundaries of language in drama by establishing his audience as chorus. Background information on Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy and McPherson’s own comments on the plays are included with the research on the plays themselves. This work articulates the chorus itself but also the choral, …

Terror, Hospitality And The Gift Of Death In Morrison’S Beloved, Puspa Damai Jan 2014

Terror, Hospitality And The Gift Of Death In Morrison’S Beloved, Puspa Damai

English Faculty Research

The “us versus them” narrative still pre-dominates the analysis of terrorism in the West, which invariably associates “them” with terrorism. Toni Morrison’s hauntingly memorable novel – Beloved – provides a radically different and historically grounded view of terror and terrorism in the West. The novel not only releases us from the “us versus them” paradigm by demonstrating America’s intimacy with terror, it also enables us to examine terror and terrorism from the perspective of a gendered and ethnic subject who subverts the easy categorization of “us” and “them” or civilized and terrorist. Following Jacques Derrida’s contemplations on death and terror, …

Mad Love And Narrative Uncertainty In The Twentieth Century: A Study Of The Good Soldier And Le Ravissement De Lol V. Stein, Rose Ducharme Jan 2014

Mad Love And Narrative Uncertainty In The Twentieth Century: A Study Of The Good Soldier And Le Ravissement De Lol V. Stein, Rose Ducharme

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines narrative uncertainty in the twentieth century novel as it relates to madness, adultery, and the convention of the unreliable narrator. The unreliable narratives of Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier and Marguerite Duras’ Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein expose their characters’ investment in illusions, the doubling of the narrators’ and readers’ desires to interpret, the transfer of madness through narrative, and the possibility that a void of meaning underlies the text.

Literatura Sobre La Frontera Norte Mexicana: Comparación Y Análisis Del Discurso Pragmático, Emily Celeste Vázquez Enríquez Jan 2014

Literatura Sobre La Frontera Norte Mexicana: Comparación Y Análisis Del Discurso Pragmático, Emily Celeste Vázquez Enríquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Science-Fictional North Korea: A Defective History, Seo-Young J. Chu Jan 2014

Science-Fictional North Korea: A Defective History, Seo-Young J. Chu

Publications and Research

Kafkaesque, Orwellian, eerie, surreal, bizarre, grotesque, alien, wacky, fascinating, dystopian, illusive, theatrical, antic, haunting, apocalyptic: these are just a few of the vaguely science-fictional adjectives that are now associated with North Korea. At the same time, North Korea has become an oddly convenient trope for a certain aesthetic – an uncanny opacity; an ominous mystique – that many writers and artists have exploited to generate striking science-fictional effects in texts with little or no connection to North Korean reality. (The 2002 Bond film Die another Day, for example, draws from North Korea’s science-fictional aura to animate North Korean super-villains who …

Mapping The World, Culture, And Border-Crossing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, I-Chun Wang

CLCWeb Library

Authors in the collected volume Mapping the World, Culture, and Border-crossing — edited by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and I-Chun Wang and published by National Sun Yat-sen University Press in 2010— begin with exploring theoretical premises about the processes and ramifications of cultural crossings to establish a clearly defined theoretical context for the case studies which follow. The case studies range from the creation of identity through patriotic songs in Taiwan under martial law, to nationality and Japanese identity, cultural autonomy in contemporary North America, Asian migration to Latin America, ethnic identity in the writings of Tan, Naipaul, Eliot, and …
