Book Review: Security Risk Management: Building An Information Security Risk Management Program From The Ground Up, Katina Michael 2012 University of Wollongong

Book Review: Security Risk Management: Building An Information Security Risk Management Program From The Ground Up, Katina Michael

Associate Professor Katina Michael

In an age of outsourcing tasks that are not considered to be a core competency of the business, organisations have often relied on external consultants for matters pertaining to security. In actual fact, most companies could have utilized existing skill-sets in-house to produce a security risk management program, if only they knew what steps to take, and how to go about it all. Evan Wheeler in his book on information security risk management does just that- he equips professionals tasked with security, with the thinking required to create a program that is more preoccupied with the complex strategic-level questions than …

Design And Experimental Validation Of Continuous Dna Separation Using Itp-Based Microfluidic Device, Nora C. M. Goscinski, Mary E. Rosa, Elizabeth K. Wheeler, Maxim Shusteff 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Design And Experimental Validation Of Continuous Dna Separation Using Itp-Based Microfluidic Device, Nora C. M. Goscinski, Mary E. Rosa, Elizabeth K. Wheeler, Maxim Shusteff

Chemistry and Biochemistry

We have demonstrated a chip-based microfluidic device suitable for rapid and high-throughput DNA separation and purification for downstream analysis. The glass-based device incorporates a transverse free-flow isotachophoresis (tFF-ITP) that overcomes the volume limitations of CE approaches, and allows continuous sample processing in contrast to batch-mode solid-phase extraction (SPE). The device is able to focus DNA at flow rates up to 100 uL/min, and sample conductivity up to 2 mS/cm. Downstream of the chip, 30-40% of DNA from the input sample is recovered as a result of ITP focusing, and preliminary results indicate that this design is able to purify DNA …

Perceptions And Rankings Of Technology Management Competencies, Mark Doggett, Pam Mcgee, Sophia Scott

SEAS Faculty Publications

According to Thamhain (2005) the “Management of technology is the art and science of creating value by using technology together with other resources of an organization” (p. 6). A technology manager should have some minimum level of technical knowledge, applied abilities in systems design, application, products or processes, and skills in one or more contextual areas (ITEA, 2000/2002). Technology managers must have certain competencies that are agreed-upon or measurable, preferably both. At the university level, technology management programs are distinctly different from engineering or engineering technology programs (i.e., mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.). A required management curriculum is what distinguishes ATMAE …

Economic Modeling & Optimization Of A Region Specific Multi-Feedstock Biorefinery Supply Chain, William H. Faulkner 2012 University of Kentucky

Economic Modeling & Optimization Of A Region Specific Multi-Feedstock Biorefinery Supply Chain, William H. Faulkner

Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering

The objective of this thesis is to include strategic and tactical level decisions into the biorefinery supply chain design for a specific region while comparing multiple conversion technologies and biomass feedstocks. The allocation of biomass feedstocks, products, and the respective supply chain configuration locations are determined while ensuring the regions monthly biomass availability and product market demand constraints are met. This research considers all actions required to bring the bio-based products to market from harvesting, storing, and processing the biomass to market distribution. Two different conversion technologies are chosen for comparison: one advanced conversion technology and one conventional technology. Potential …

Engineering Leadership, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle 2012 Technological University Dublin

Engineering Leadership, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle

Books/Book chapters

By 1921 the American sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his book The Engi-neers and the Price System argued for a technocracy in which the welfare of humanity would be entrusted to the control of the engineers because they alone were competent to understand the complexities of the industrial system and processes and thereby optimize and maximize its output. This chapter sets out to explore the extent to which Veblen’s technocratic leadership thesis has come to pass. We first review the role of the engineer in society and in the context of Europe, the US and China, and examine the influence of …

Location Privacy Under Dire Threat As Uberveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke 2012 University of Wollongong

Location Privacy Under Dire Threat As Uberveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke

Associate Professor Katina Michael

Location tracking and monitoring applications have proliferated with the arrival of smart phones that are equipped with onboard global positioning system (GPS) chipsets. It is now possible to locate a smart phone user down to 10 metres of accuracy on average. Innovators have been quick to capitalise on this emerging market by introducing novel pedestrian tracking technologies which can denote the geographic path of a mobile user. At the same time there is contention by law enforcement personnel over the need for a warrant process to track an individual in a public space. This paper considers the future of location …

The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, ELLIOTT LIPINSKY 2012 Faulkner University, Thomas Goode Jones School of Law

The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky

ELLIOTT LIPINSKY

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation that administers federal funds and provides technical assistance for the support of locally operated public transit systems. MARTA / Atlanta metro area are part of FTA Region IV (the Southeast). FTA would be involved, for instance, in financing the federal grant monies discussed above. But actual regulation of operations (i.e., what MARTA does each day, or what MARTA will plan to do regionally) is more closely regulated by Georgia agencies.

Until recently, the Atlanta metropolitan area had no powerful central agency to coordinate regional transit. The …

High Speed Rail In America: An Evaluation Of The Regulatory, Real Property, And Environmental Obstacles A Project Will Encounter, Darren A. Prum, Sarah L. Catz 2012 University of California - Irvine

High Speed Rail In America: An Evaluation Of The Regulatory, Real Property, And Environmental Obstacles A Project Will Encounter, Darren A. Prum, Sarah L. Catz

Darren A. Prum

In 2009, President Barak Obama allocated $8 billion in stimulus funding for high speed rail projects across the United States. One year later, in 2010, an additional $2.5 billion was distributed to corridors with High Speed Rail Projects. Even though the most recent congressional budget eliminated high speed rail funding, many corridors are working diligently to break ground by the end of 2012. Before a high speed rail project can be fully implemented there are many legal and environmental issues and regulations to examine. This paper conducts a complete analysis of those issues and regulations and suggests how to apply …

An Evaluation Of The Performance Of Network Rtk Gnss Services In Ireland, Audrey Martin, Eugene Mcgovern

Conference Papers

The national Geodetic infrastructure for the island of Ireland has developed rapidly to a fully GNSS compatible coordinate reference system - Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) which is realised through a Continuously Operating Reference System (CORS) network of active GNSS stations. The National Mapping Authority’s CORS network provides data for post processing and streamed raw data for real-time network (NRTK) solutions. This NRTK raw data is currently being used by both Leica and Topcon to provide independent NRTK solutions. A second CORS network, known as VRS Now Ireland, with both RINEX and NRTK capabilities, was established in 2008 by Trimble and …
