This culminating project has been submitted as part of the graduate program in Fire Protection Engineering at Cal Poly. It documents an Assisted Living and Memory Care Center’s compliance with applicable fire safety prescriptions contained in the 2019 California Building and Fire Codes (CBC and CFC). Performance-based methods incorporating deterministic design fires were then used to verify that the final building design and operating procedures met the life safety needs of its unique occupants.

This research is an original approach that applies industrial engineering and operations research tools to the sociological problem of sex trafficking victimization. Such an approach enables quantitative evaluation of the impacts on an individual’s lifetime by anti-trafficking efforts and public policies.

A fully interconnected, lifetime model for the experience of sex trafficking victimization is defined as the result of a comprehensive review of literature. Beginning with victimization risk, the defined model is an anticipatory tool to understand the incidences and consequences to individuals during their lifetime. This Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) was written using modern fire protection engineering principles to characterize the Applied Chemistry Management and Enrichment (ACME) Building at the Pacific Northwest National Research Area (PNNRA) using both a prescriptive-based and performance-based analysis to ensure the building and occupants can be safe in fire conditions. Recommendations are made as part of this analysis to improve the survivability of this structure if a fire were to occur.

This thesis presents a modular, low-cost, prototype inverted pendulum platform for undergraduate Aerospace control theory research and education. The platform's default configuration integrates a propeller and reaction wheel as its actuators, with multiple sensors available to measure the pendulum's states. The platform utilizes open-source software and hardware to power the actuators, and uses MATLAB/Simulink to streamline data collection. System identification techniques are applied to the platform, and the mathematical model of the pendulum is verified. Momentum exchange between the reaction wheel and propeller during closed-loop stabilization of the pendulum is demonstrated.
