Pore-Scale Modeling Of Fluid Flow And Particle Transport In Multi-Scale Porous Media, Bin Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nanomaterials have recently gained much interest in the field of petroleum engineering and environmental engineering. Understanding the particle transport mechanisms in geological porous media is important to design fit-for-purpose nanomaterials and certain operating parameters for practical usage of those materials. It has been known that natural rock has multi-scale porosity (macroporosity and microporosity) in nature. The microporosity can have a strong impact on the flow and mass transport, but the microscale physics and macroscopic consequences remain poorly understood.

The first part of this dissertation introduces a new higher-order, locally mass conserving FEM method. Stokes equation and Darcy equation are solved …

Motion Detection On A Frequency Jumping Rfid Signal Using Machine Learning, Trevor Stanca

Symposium of Student Scholars

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is a well-known technology in wireless communication. It is hypothesized that the capabilities of RFID can be extended by reading an ID number and detecting movement around the reader during the read. Following regulatory standards, this study presents the foundation for a software defined RFID reader that may simultaneously detects and classifies the type of movement during the interrogation operation. A frequency hopping signal in unlicensed 5.8GHz can be analyzed using machine learning to extract a Doppler profile. We effectively collect information about an object through RFID by potentially detecting the speed of the object or …

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo

Dissertations

Due to the difficulty and expense of collecting bathymetric data, modeling is the primary tool to produce detailed maps of the ocean floor. Current modeling practices typically utilize only one interpolator; the industry standard is splines-in-tension.

In this dissertation we introduce a new nominal-informed ensemble interpolator designed to improve modeling accuracy in regions of sparse data. The method is guided by a priori domain knowledge provided by artificially intelligent classifiers. We recast such geomorphological classifications, such as ‘seamount’ or ‘ridge’, as nominal data which we utilize as foundational shapes in an expanded ordinary least squares regression-based algorithm. To our knowledge …

Influence Of Extracellular Matrix Stiffness And Topography On Neuronal Cell Behavior And Neurite Outgrowth, Mohan Yasodharababu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The focus of regeneration therapy for traumatic brain injuries and Alzheimer's disease is on the promotion and growth of neuronal cells. In vitro research attempts to improve this by modifying the stiffness and topography of the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, the limitations of in vitro experiments make it difficult to control the individual factors influencing neuronal cell growth. A computational model can be used to decouple individual factors and study them individually to gain a better understanding of the mechanics between the neuronal cell and ECM, which will aid in the design of in vitro experimental studies.

This study develops …
