Speech-Language Pathologists' Perspectives On Augmentative Communication And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Madison Lambert 2022 Eastern Michigan University

Speech-Language Pathologists' Perspectives On Augmentative Communication And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Madison Lambert

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a common strategy that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use to help individuals better communicate. AAC is used to assist or replace verbal communication. This strategy can include pointing at pictures, having a device that speaks typed words, or using gestures such as sign language. AAC is commonly used to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder with communication. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability that impacts social communication and interaction. Individuals with ASD also commonly have restrictive or repetitive behaviors. Past research on AAC has focused more on what it is and why …

The Roles Of Set Size And Nonexample Type On Concept Formation, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeleine J. Murphy 2022 West Virginia University

The Roles Of Set Size And Nonexample Type On Concept Formation, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeleine J. Murphy

Graduate Student Scholarship

Concept formation is demonstrated when a learner responds when new examples are presented (i.e., generalization) but not when new nonexamples are presented (i.e., discrimination). Gradually increasing the number of examples and nonexamples taught together (i.e., set-size expansion) promotes concept formation with nonhumans. Although set size impacts speed of acquisition with humans, concept formation has not been evaluated. Therefore, the primary purpose of the current study was to compare acquisition and concept formation during two procedures: set-size expansion and single set-size. College students were taught two biological concepts, one using set-size expansion and the other with the full …

An Encomium For Community College Students In Five Scenes, James Gallagher 2022 Community College of Baltimore County

An Encomium For Community College Students In Five Scenes, James Gallagher

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Books start arriving at my apartment by the boxful. As part of the committee judging the CCCC Outstanding Book Contest, I am inundated with books, and I am excited to get down to reading them. I feel like a graduate student all over again, reading things I would never read if I weren’t “made” to (New Materialisms, anyone?). Most of the books excite me and make me think about how I can move forward as a teacher of first year writing. Some of them hurt my brain. Some of them annoy me.

Review Of Pars In Practice: More Resources And Strategies For Online Writing Instructors, Jessie Borgman And Casey Mcardle, Editors, Madeline Crozier 2022 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Review Of Pars In Practice: More Resources And Strategies For Online Writing Instructors, Jessie Borgman And Casey Mcardle, Editors, Madeline Crozier

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

The charge that “we are all online writing instructors” should resonate with any composition instructor who has taught during the Covid-19 pandemic (Borgman and McArdle 3). This exigent universal truth gives rise to the compilation of this volume. The well-timed collection builds on Borgman and McArdle’s co-authored book Personal, Accessible, Responsive, Strategic: Resources and Strategies for Online Writing Instructors, which earned the 2020 Computers and Composition Distinguished Book Award and introduced the PARS approach to online writing instruction—Personal, Accessible, Responsive, Strategic.

Review Of Creativity And The Paris Review Interviews: A Discourse Analysis Of Famous Writers’ Composing Practices By Rhonda Leathers Dively, Heidi M. Williams

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Only by fate and fortune would an apprentice receive the opportunity to review the work of a master. Nearly 14 years after sitting as a doctoral student in her Creativity Theory course, I am pleased to review Dr. Ronda Leathers Dively’s text, Creativity and The Paris Review Interviews: A Discourse Analysis of Famous Writers’ Composing Practices. Dively has written and published on the topic of Creativity Theory since the late 90s and is notably one of the pioneers for applying Creativity Theory in the composition and expository writing classrooms.

Review Of Teaching The Way: Using The Principles Of The Art Of War To Teach Composition By Steven T. Nelson, Christian Smith 2022 Coastal Carolina University

Review Of Teaching The Way: Using The Principles Of The Art Of War To Teach Composition By Steven T. Nelson, Christian Smith

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

First, an admission, or perhaps a confession: my enthusiasm for teaching composition has been waning in the last year or two. I don’t know if it was the pandemic coupled with the resulting year on Zoom or the cumulative effect of teaching writing for the last decade and a half, but somewhere along the way it became a different experience. All too often after grading or having a lesson plan fall flat, I would repeat the first two lines from Geoffrey Sirc’s underappreciated review article, “Resisting Entropy,” when he says “Teaching writing is impossible. You have ten to fifteen weeks …

Review Of Creativity And Chaos: Reflections On A Decade Of Progressive Change In Public Schools, 1967-1977 By Charles Suhor, Stan Scott 2022 University of Maine, Portland

Review Of Creativity And Chaos: Reflections On A Decade Of Progressive Change In Public Schools, 1967-1977 By Charles Suhor, Stan Scott

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

In the title of Charles Suhor’s engaging memoir, the words progressive, change, and creativity—even chaos—will I suspect light fires of the imagination for many progressively inclined teachers and other readers. That goes all the more for those of us who lived through the upheavals and exciting breakthroughs of the late ‘60s and ‘70s, who may also have fought battles, like the ones recounted by Suhor, on behalf of our own students and children, to bring progressive changes to schools and colleges. As a former professor of English and philosophy and co-chair (with my friend and colleague Irene Papoulis) of the …

Review Of Self+Culture+Writing: Autoethnography For/As Writing Studies, Rebecca Jackson And Jackie Grutsch Mckinney, Editors, Amanda E. Scott 2022 Western Michigan University

Review Of Self+Culture+Writing: Autoethnography For/As Writing Studies, Rebecca Jackson And Jackie Grutsch Mckinney, Editors, Amanda E. Scott

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This volume brings together a compendium of works that explore autoethnography and its emerging applications. A qualitative approach that first appeared in the social sciences, autoethnography has recently gained traction within other disciplines over the last two decades, including rhetoric and composition studies. However, due to its theoretically and methodologically amorphous qualities, over the years researchers have struggled to firmly define autoethnography, especially as the field continues to evolve. Still, many within writing studies have championed the method and now understand it as a recursive tool for studying “the relationship between self and other and all of its dimensions” (Kafar …

Examining The Relationship Between Admission Requirements And Program Outcome Variables In A Special Education Teacher Preparation Program, Emily Woofenden 2022 University at Albany, State University of New York

Examining The Relationship Between Admission Requirements And Program Outcome Variables In A Special Education Teacher Preparation Program, Emily Woofenden

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The need for well-prepared special education teachers makes it important to examine how to best select candidates for special education teacher preparation programs, or at least to determine which, if any, admission variables relate to program outcome measures. This study is a replication and extension of a 2012 study—it used archival data from 64 students to investigate the relationships among multiple pre-admission variables from teacher candidate applications and on-site admission tasks (undergraduate GPA, letter of reference ratings, interview ratings, math assessment scores, and a teaching skills task) and outcome variables (graduate GPA and preservice practicum teaching performance scores). The outcome …

A Study Of Victorian Teachers’ Beliefs About Student Behaviour And Their Perception Of Preparation And Confidence To Engage In Evidence-Based Behaviour Support, Russell A. Fox, Umesh Sharma, Erin S. Leif 2022 Monash University

A Study Of Victorian Teachers’ Beliefs About Student Behaviour And Their Perception Of Preparation And Confidence To Engage In Evidence-Based Behaviour Support, Russell A. Fox, Umesh Sharma, Erin S. Leif

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Positive and proactive approaches to behaviour support have been recognised as one component required to create effective and inclusive school environments (Finkelstein et al., 2019). States and territories within Australia have increasingly adopted school-wide positive behavioural interventions and supports (SWPBIS) as a means to creating effective social and behavioural change (Poed & Whitefield, 2020). However, ensuring staff implement SWPBIS as it is intended has been a challenge, both in Australia and internationally (McIntosh et al., 2016; NSW Ombudsman, 2017). The current study identifies and seeks to address two gaps in the existing literature exploring noted barriers to …

Changing Needs Of Special Education Preservice Teachers In The Practicum, Stella Gidalevich, Maayan Shalev 2022 Oranim College of Education, Israel

Changing Needs Of Special Education Preservice Teachers In The Practicum, Stella Gidalevich, Maayan Shalev

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Self-determination theory (SDT) suggests that people strive to fulfill three basic needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. In teacher education research, fulfilling those needs is connected to positive skill development and increased wellbeing of preservice teachers and their students. Teacher education programs for special education preservice teachers (SEPT) include a professional experience in various school settings with neurodiverse students. This professional experience gives rise to specific needs for these SEPT. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 SEPT, studying at various stages of two teacher education programs. The findings were analyzed qualitatively. Results revealed developing and changing needs throughout the educational …

Preparing Australian Special Educators: Courses And Content, Jennifer Stephenson, Rahul Ganguly, Coral Kemp, Catherine Salisbury

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

: The characteristics and content of post-graduate courses in special and/or inclusive teacher education in Australian universities were examined using publicly available material on university websites. Content analysis was guided by a set of content area elements covering desirable skills and knowledge for special educators that were identified in the Australian literature. The presence or absence of these content elements in each course and in core or elective units was coded for 28 courses from 21 universities. All or most courses covered generic content such as teaching strategies and evaluating and using research. However, more specialist content, such as explicit …

Understanding Functional Assessments, Ife Damon 2022 CUNY College of Staten Island

Understanding Functional Assessments, Ife Damon

Open Educational Resources

As special education teachers, having students with behavior challenges is highly likely. Functional assessments are used to support individuals with their challenging behaviors. Therefore, it is important for teachers to understand what functional assessments are, when to use them, and how to use them. This OER is adapted from Chapter 2, The Methodology of Functional Assessment, of the book, Instruction in Functional Assessment by Desrochers and Fallon (2014). Chapter 2 answers the following questions:

  • What is functional assessment?

  • What are the three main functional assessment approaches and how are they used?

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach? …
