The purpose of this research study was to investigate the effect(s) district provided training, or lack thereof, had on paraprofessional self-efficacy. This study was a descriptive action research study using a survey design. The participants of this study were selected from a south suburban, Cook county high school district. All participants, when surveyed, were currently employed paraprofessionals working with students with disabilities in grades 9-12. This study was conducted as part of a Multicategorical Special Education graduate student culminating project at Governors State University in summer 2015.

The purpose of this study was to discover if adult initiated transitions from center to center cause students with Autism self-injurious behavior. An ABC chart was used to gather data based on how many times the student inflicts self-harm upon himself, and what time of the day the self-injurious behavior occurs. With the data that was gathered on the student it was noticed that the most self-injurious behavior occurred when the student had to leave one center provided with adult initiation, and when he did not want to leave the activity of choice. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of fitness activities on communication skills of adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Over the course of 12 weeks, 3 middle school students with ASD participated in a wellness program focusing on learning social and conversational skills through practicing verbal language in a 1:1 situation, paired with peers, and whole group instruction. The initiation and maintenance of their conversation through reciprocal responses, and responses to questions and comments were evaluated. Students with ASD often exhibit behavior problems, of these; off-task behaviors are a concern. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of using an iPad for students with ASD to self-monitor their own behaviors. A boy and three girls with ASD participated. A single subject design with ABAB phases was used. During the baseline, each student's behavior occurrences in a language arts class were observed using interval recording of three on-task behaviors including facing forward, engaging in assignment, and looking at the teacher. This study implemented three behavior interventions. The results were analyzed to determine the successes and comparisons of the interventions. The participants were two first grade male students diagnosed with ADHD. This exploratory study examined the perspectives of rural secondary special education teachers and related service professionals on structured work experiences for youth with disabilities. An online survey was developed for this study and distributed to teachers and related service professionals through school principals. Rural schools were identified using the National Center for Educational Statistics. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the computer program, Raz-Kids will assist in supporting independent reading as well as increase a student's guided reading level, fluency, and comprehension. Four 1st graders with a learning disability in an inclusive classroom participated in the study. The Raz-Kids online reading program was provided individually for 15 minutes each session during the literacy intervention period, 3 times a week for 16 weeks. This study compared the effectiveness of auditory and visual redirections in facilitating topic coherence for persons with Dementia of Alzheimer’s Type (DAT). Five persons with moderate stage DAT engaged in conversation with the first author. Three topics related to activities of daily living, recreational activities, food, and grooming, were broached. Each topic was presented three times to each participant: once as a baseline condition, once with auditory redirection to topic, and once with visual redirection to topic. This quantitative non-experimental correlational study used logistic regression and archival data to examine the relationship between scores obtained by children at age three on the Developmental Assessment of Young Children (DAYC) rating scale and later special education eligibility status. Large scientific studies have recognized homophobic language as a national concern (American Association of University Women [AAUW], 2001; Kosciw, Greytak, Diaz, & Bartkiewicz, 2010). Concerning perceptions of homophobic language use, quantitative studies were mostly conducted in specific areas of the United States and qualitative studies have largely approached the issue with the theory of masculinity. The current study proposed to approach the study actively challenging all assumptions about homophobic language use. This study assimilated 20 adolescents' perceptions of homophobic language, using a hermeneutic qualitative methodology. The LOOK, an iOS app, is a viewing time measure used to assess sexual interest. The measure is based on the assumption that sexual interest can be assessed by the amount of time a participant spends looking at an image. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of the LOOK, a newly developed viewing time instrument, to accurately screen and diagnose individuals with deviant sexual interest. The profiles of known sexual offenders were compared to norm-referenced profiles of an exclusively heterosexual, non-pedophilic, male, college student population. Systematic screening for social, emotional, and behavioral concerns (SEBC) identifies at-risk students and provides information to guide interventions that may prevent negative outcomes (Glover & Albers, 2006; Kauffman, 1999; Severson, Walker, Hope-Dolittle, Katochwill, & Gresham, 2007). However, the screening process may be influenced by the gender of the student (Young, Sabbah, Young, Reiser, & Richardson, 2010). A multi-site qualitative study explored the group experiences of 6 group leaders and 10 group members who participated in 7 different university counseling center international student support groups. Data collection and analysis phases followed the process of hermeneutic interpretation articulated by Kvale and Brinkmann (2009), which resulted in nine major themes and ten sub-themes organized into four sections: (a) Recruitment and group design, (b) Experiences of group members, (c) Experiences of group leaders, and (d) Additional considerations. Implications for international student support groups are discussed.
