Addressing The Black-White Ap Participation Gap: An Improvement Science Project, Gales Scroggs

All Dissertations

Advanced Placement (AP) courses have become an essential preparation for college, and the benefits of AP participation for students are plentiful. AP courses allow students to earn higher grade point averages in high school, stand out in the college admissions process, and increase their likelihood of graduating college with a degree in four years. The benefits experienced by Black AP students may be even more significant. However, Black students have lagged behind their White peers in AP enrollment since the inception of the AP program. This study examined the influence of targeted, counselor-led academic advisement on the AP enrollment of …

This study followed twenty-three students and mentors throughout the school year, and examined the association between school-based mentoring and grade level retention or promotion. The results were compared to the same group of students and their performance during the previous school year, …

Texas High School Counselors’ And Advisors’ Ccmr Self-Efficacy: An Exploratory Descriptive Study, Amanda R. Jolivet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last 20 years, there has been a growing emphasis on ensuring high school graduates are prepared for college and career in the 21st century. This is especially true in Texas, a state that has not only instituted college, career, and military readiness (CCMR) policies but has also monetarily incentivized schools and districts for meeting specific CCMR accountability metrics. Although Texas high school counselors and advisors are responsible for ensuring students across the state have access to CCMR information, support, and resources, not much was known about Texas high school counselors/advisors’ self-efficacy as it relates to postsecondary planning or …

Effects Of An Interdependent Group Contingency On Classroom Behavior And Teacher-Student Relationships For Students With Behavioral Support Needs: An Initial Investigation Of Cw-Fit Ms Tier 1 In Inclusive Secondary Settings, Nancy Ruth Young

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A wide body of literature has documented the disproportionality in exclusionary discipline rates (Gregory et al., 2010; Losen et al., 2015; Office of Special Education Programs, 2020; Skiba, 2014; Welsh & Little, 2018). Students with disabilities or other minority backgrounds are removed from their classrooms at higher rates than their peers (Losen & Gillespie, 2012; Office of Special Education Programs, 2020). Such punitive practices have been associated with negative outcomes for the most at-risk youth. Thus, educational stakeholders have begun to move away from these punitive practices toward more positive behavior management methods. This study sought to examine the impact …

This study centers around the author’s own Holocaust unit taught to eighth-grade honors ELA students in an urban, Title I school district. The unit is used as an artifact to examine two aspects of a successful unit on …

Dissertations and Theses

The integration of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into healthcare professional training is critical in order to ensure positive patient outcomes and help combat healthcare disparities, leading towards health equity. There is not currently a standard specific to DEI awareness in healthcare education and training. One area of healthcare training is simulation-based education (SBE), which is training that is set up to be as close to a real environment as possible for healthcare professional training. There is little in the literature that addresses DEI within SBE, yet SBE is one area with the potential for making an impact in healthcare …
