Teacher Perceptions Of Environmental Science In Rural Northwestern New Mexico Public Schools, Marie Quiahuitl Julienne

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

In this study, I explored what teachers perceive as the factors that impact their teaching of environmental science in rural secondary level schools in northwestern New Mexico. I adapted Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological systems model, based on four environmental subsystem levels (microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem), as the conceptual framework to address the major research question of this study, and developed 18 interview questions to explore teachers’ perceptions of factors that influence their teaching of environmental science. I investigated the perspectives science teachers have about environmental science topics and the influences they perceive that affect how they teach environmental science, and …

Understanding The Co-Teaching Experience Of Teachers: Negotiating Choice And Efficacy, Mary A. Garofalo 2019 Seton Hall University

Understanding The Co-Teaching Experience Of Teachers: Negotiating Choice And Efficacy, Mary A. Garofalo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Co-teaching, a main strategy of the inclusionary movement, has been widely researched over the last 25 years. Although there is much research in the way of student outcomes and best practices, the research on teachers’ perceptions of co-teaching on the secondary level is non-existent. Although all of the research on best practices of co-teaching suggests that voluntary participation and choice of partner is important when implementing a co-teaching program, school administration tend to veer away from giving teachers a choice due to scheduling or financial constraints.

Using qualitative, case-study research methods, including teacher and administrative interviews, survey and field observations, …

Are You Listening? How Listening Skills Help Students Become Informed And Engaged Citizens In A Culturally Diverse World, Nicole Schwaben 2019 Bowling Green State University

Are You Listening? How Listening Skills Help Students Become Informed And Engaged Citizens In A Culturally Diverse World, Nicole Schwaben

Honors Projects

The ability to listen is vital for good communication to exist and flourish. Without properly developed listening skills, one may unintentionally create roadblocks when communicating with others. Good communication will allow for the spread of differing ideas and perspectives. The social studies classroom is a place in which students have the opportunity to develop skills to become good citizens. These skills include the ability to make reasoned and informed decisions and interact with a culturally diverse and interdependent world. In order to achieve these skills, students must engage in discussion with their peers. While there is a focus on the …

Digging Into Student Metacognition With A Consistent Exit Ticket, Chloe Fifer

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

Formative assessment is a common practice in classrooms across every grade-level. The purpose of this study was to see what happens to the test grades of seventh-grade science students following the completion of a consistent exit ticket for an entire unit with the following two questions: What was your biggest takeaway from today’s material? What test question can you write using the material from today? The author collected data through student test records, classroom documents, student surveys, student interviews, and note takings. For analysis, the author used the constant comparative method, as well as descriptive statistics. The author found the …

Title Ix And The Responsibility Of Leadership In Collegiate Athletics, Regan J. McComb, Chelsea Kaunert 2019 Coastal Carolina Community College

Title Ix And The Responsibility Of Leadership In Collegiate Athletics, Regan J. Mccomb, Chelsea Kaunert

Honors Theses

Typically, when we hear about Title IX, we think of scholarship dollars, ratio of men’s and women’s sports, and equal funding, but in the past several years we have seen a shift in focus to sexual misconduct. Studies have repeatedly shown that sexual assault rates on college campuses are not on the decline. With one in five college students graduating a victim of sexual misconduct, we must now demand more of those we consider leadership in the university setting. Recently we have seen a trend of prominent women, including female athletes, speaking out about their experience with sexual assault. We …

The Formative and Summative Test process is a three-day process allowing teachers to collect data, reteach content, and help students meet mastery. The purpose of the study was to understand the students’ perceptions of the testing process, as well to determine if test grades were improving and how the process came to be. The author collected data by distributing surveys, conducting six student interviews and one administrator interview, and observing student conversations. After analyzing …

Developing Metaliterate Citizens: Designing And Delivering Enhanced Global Learning Opportunities, Trudi E. Jacobson, Thomas P. Mackey, Kelsey L. O'Brien

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Metaliteracy, originally developed in 2010 as a response to a then-limited conception of information literacy, provides a pedagogical model for thinking and knowing in a social media age that has allowed for the proliferation of false and misleading information. It is vital that individuals be thoughtful and critical consumers of information, and also responsible and ethical information creators and sharers. Metaliterate learners are developed across academic disciplines through teaching and learning that support self-direction, collaboration, participation, and metacognitive thinking. The creation of innovative, collaborative, and open online learning environments that apply the metaliteracy goals and learning objectives is imperative for …

A qualitative approach examines interviews, focus group, and survey data through thematic investigative interpretation to yield common and unique experiences and perspectives relevant to recruitment processes, funding, support systems, and observed outcomes. The findings indicate how adequate preparation, …

See And Be Seen: Young Adult Refugee Literature In The High School Curriculum, Patrice Splan

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are more than 25 million refugees in the world today, over half of whom are under the age of 18. This project provides an analysis of young adult refugee literature with a unit plan for application of texts in a ninth-grade Virginia English classroom, stressing the importance of education as a tool for awareness, reflection, and empathy.

Beliefs And Practices Of High School Science Teachers On The Integration Of Technology-Based Assessments In The Classroom, Hannah Weis

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

As more schools begin to phase in technology to classrooms, teachers are faced with a new task. Technology-based assessments allow teachers and students to get immediate feedback on the level of understanding of a certain topic. Using the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework gives insight to the knowledge base of teachers in various categories. A survey was conducted with Minnesota high school science teachers on their perceptions and practices of implementing technology-based assessments in their classrooms. Data analysis showed a difference between the beliefs and practices of teachers in their use of this type of assessment. Participants described a …
