Implementing A Sheltered Science Course In An Iowa High School, Erin Holt Johnson 2011 Minnesota State University - Mankato

Implementing A Sheltered Science Course In An Iowa High School, Erin Holt Johnson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

English Learners (ELs) entering U.S. schools at the high school level face the enormous challenge of acquiring academic literacy as well as secondary-level content in a relatively short period of time. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that a significant number of the ELs entering at the secondary level are students with limited or interrupted formal educations as a result of family migrations, unequal schooling in their home countries, political unrest or even war. In response to this pressing need to teach language and content simultaneously, many school districts are adopting the sheltered instruction (SI) model. This paper will …

Stories Of Transformation : Place-Based Education And The Developing Place-Consciousness Of Educators Along The Hudson River, Jennifer Karen Rosenthal 2011 University at Albany, State University of New York

Stories Of Transformation : Place-Based Education And The Developing Place-Consciousness Of Educators Along The Hudson River, Jennifer Karen Rosenthal

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This phenomenological case study investigates the lived experiences of five educators who engage in on-board educational programs, offered by the non-profit environmental organization Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc., and follows their stories of place-conscious development leading to place-based educational engagement. By analyzing surveys, participant-generated photographs, in-depth interviews, field observations, educator generated curricula, field notes, and member checking, this study examines each participants' recalled life story which provides a basis for understanding their present educational practices. Using a conceptual framework based upon Gruenewald's (2003) critical pedagogy of place supported by the constructs of conscientizacao (Freire, 1970) and the development of an …

Fifth Grade Children's Use Of Reciprocal Teaching To Solve Word Problems In Mathematics, Mary Helen Collen 2011 University at Albany, State University of New York

Fifth Grade Children's Use Of Reciprocal Teaching To Solve Word Problems In Mathematics, Mary Helen Collen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Reciprocal teaching, a social constructivist instruction method, was explored in this study on the mathematical word problem solving skills of fifth grade students in two elementary schools within a suburban school district in upstate New York. Eighty-five students in four intact classes participated in this mixed methods study.

The Relationship Between Special Education Teachers' Mathematical Knowledge, Instructional Choices, And Beliefs About Teaching And Learning Mathematics, Virginia Rich Lee 2011 University at Albany, State University of New York

The Relationship Between Special Education Teachers' Mathematical Knowledge, Instructional Choices, And Beliefs About Teaching And Learning Mathematics, Virginia Rich Lee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Thirty-four certified special education teachers completed four instruments in addition to viewing video recordings of students engaging in mathematical tasks. The mathematical beliefs of special education teachers were investigated through the use of the Mathematics Beliefs Scales (Capraro, 2005). Special education teachers' mathematical knowledge was measured using the Fraction Knowledge Assessment, which included a range of fraction tasks drawn from state and national elementary level mathematics standards. The proposed instruction of the special education teachers was examined through participants' written responses to video recordings of students solving fraction problems. Demographic information was obtained through the use of a questionnaire. Results …

Open-Ended (Extended/Constructed) Response Questions As Predictors Of Success On Subsequent State Mathematics Examination : The Influence Of Mathematical Awareness And Conceptual Knowledge, Kathy Ann Gullie 2011 University at Albany, State University of New York

Open-Ended (Extended/Constructed) Response Questions As Predictors Of Success On Subsequent State Mathematics Examination : The Influence Of Mathematical Awareness And Conceptual Knowledge, Kathy Ann Gullie

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study investigated the predictive ability of students' responses to open-ended, constructed/extended questions in third and fourth grade mathematics content sub-categories on subsequent fifth grade mathematics achievement proficiency levels. Open-ended, extended/constructed response questions reflected content as outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2007) in statistics and probability, number sense, numeration and operations, geometry, algebra, and measurement. Archival data from over 300 third, fourth and fifth grade students in one public school in New York State during the 2003- 2009 academic school years were utilized. Third grade predictor variables included statistics and probability, number sense, numeration and operations, …

An Examination Of Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Tpack Development Through Participation In A Technology-Based Lesson Study, Julie Whitten Riales 2011 University of Mississippi

An Examination Of Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Tpack Development Through Participation In A Technology-Based Lesson Study, Julie Whitten Riales

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research study used a layered case study (Patton, 2002) to examine the technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) of a group of inservice secondary mathematics teachers as they participated in a technology-based lesson study. Using the TPACK Development Model (Niess, 2009) as a lens, this dissertation examines interactions of the group members during lesson study meetings as well as individual case studies of four of the six participants. Data were gathered from initial surveys, initial and post-interviews, initial and post-classroom observations, writing prompts, and transcriptions of lesson study group meetings. Data were analyzed to determine the TPACK development …

Designing And Using Virtual Field Environments To Enhance And Extend Field Experience In Professional Development Programs In Geology For K-12 Teachers, Frank Douglas Granshaw 2011 Portland State University

Designing And Using Virtual Field Environments To Enhance And Extend Field Experience In Professional Development Programs In Geology For K-12 Teachers, Frank Douglas Granshaw

Dissertations and Theses

Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used to acquaint geoscience novices with some of the observation, data gathering, and problem solving done in actual field situations by geoscientists. VR environments in a variety of forms are used to prepare students for doing geologic fieldwork, as well as to provide proxies for such experience when venturing into the field is not possible. However, despite increased use of VR for these purposes, there is little research on how students learn using these environments, how using them impacts student field experience, or what constitutes effective design in light of emerging theories of geocognition.

The Influence Of Virtual Manipulatives On Second Grader's Acquisition Of Place Value Concepts, Kay Jolicoeur 2011 University of Central Florida

The Influence Of Virtual Manipulatives On Second Grader's Acquisition Of Place Value Concepts, Kay Jolicoeur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine my own practice of teaching place value and the influence virtual manipulatives had, in addition to physical manipulatives, on place value understanding of my second grade students. I wanted to see how adding a base-ten computer applet might better meet the needs of all learners while also meeting the needs of today’s technological classroom. Through this study, I found that both physical and virtual manipulatives helped students acquire place value concepts. I found that virtual manipulatives had features that engaged students in a way that increased their mathematical language, increased students’ ability …

Prospective Teachers' Use Of Representations In Solving Statistical Tasks With Dynamic Statistical Software, Hollylynne Lee, Shannon O. Driskell, Suzanne R. Harper, Keith R. Leatham, Gladis Kersaint, Robin L. Angotti

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This study examined a random stratified sample (n=62) of prospective teachers' work across eight institutions on three tasks that utilized dynamic statistical software. Our work was guided by considering how teachers may utilize their statistical knowledge and technological statistical knowledge to engage in cycles of investigation. Although teachers did not tend to take full advantage of dynamic linking capabilities, they utilized a large variety of graphical representations and often added statistical measures or other augmentations to graphs as part of their analysis.
