Horizon Content Knowledge In The Work Of Teaching: A Focus On Planning, Nick Wasserman, Julianna Connelly Stockton

Horizon content knowledge, one component of Ball et al.’s mathematical knowledge for teaching framework (e.g., Ball, Thames, & Phelps, 2008), has yet to reach adequate clarity and consensus in the field. Recently, various scholars have worked to further conceptualize and describe the mathematical horizon (e.g., Jakobsen, Thames & Ribeiro, 2013; Figueiras et al., 2011; Zazkis & Mamolo, 2011). In this communication, we identify some limitations in the ways such knowledge has thus far been described and offer an additional form of potential impact of horizon content knowledge on the work of teaching.

Research suggests that issues of environmental justice are not being routinely included in the curriculum of the K-12 classroom and that teachers in those grades do not feel prepared to teach it. Likewise, little has been written about the addition of these topics to higher education coursework, leaving the question of inclusion at this level of education as well. This apparent lacuna may point to at least one reason why K-12 teachers are neither knowledgeable about environmental justice nor prepared to teach it. While there is an expected demographic shift of the ethnic minority population in the United States to become the majority population by 2020, few minority women successfully attain baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) fields. To address this gap, this article employs critical race feminism and narrative analysis methods to examine minority women’s challenges while pursuing undergraduate STEM degrees. Findings suggest that limited access to the field, isolation and alienation, and affordability create barriers that result in many minority women leaving STEM majors. Implications for practice include targeted institutional efforts to increase recruitment and retention efforts towards …

Differences Between Concrete And Virtual Manipulatives In Preparing Tenth Grade Math Students For Standardized Tests, John G. Pappas

Research has suggested that the use of manipulatives may enhance students’ grasp of mathematical concepts. Manipulatives may be concrete (physical) objects or virtual computer-based images of objects similar to their three-dimensional counterparts. Studies with elementary and middle-school students generally have found virtual manipulatives to outperform concrete manipulatives in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics. However, very little research on manipulative use has been conducted with secondary school students. Furthermore, few studies have investigated instruction using virtual or concrete manipulatives across more than one content area.

Background: Recommendations from leading U.S. health agencies concerned with reducing childhood obesity call for increased physical activity during school and afterschool environments. Methods: We developed the Active Science curriculum, which is a variety of activity-based lessons (e.g., nature hike, dance class, walk at local park, treadmill at local YMCA) and incorporated them into traditional science classes and after school programs for middle school children in a low-income, ethnically diverse community. Following the activity experiments, students and teachers uploaded data from devices to an interactive website that provided inquiry-based exploratory learning of science content. What do the Honda Civic, the Mazda 626, and the Boeing 747 have in common? What about Weird Al's song Bob, the first name of Miley Cyrus' alter ego, and the 70s sensation Abba? What do all these things have in common? They all contain palindromes. While some people recognise a palindrome when they see one, fewer realise that a palindrome is a special case of a pattern and that these patterns are all around. Palindromes frequently occur in names, both of vehicles and people, and in music.

Connected Mathematics Learning And Gender Equity In Predominantly Latino/A High Schools: Case Of Spatial Reasoning, Raymond Falcon

This study analyzed interventions used in improving the mathematics achievement in spatial reasoning tasks for females called connectedness. Gender achievement in mathematics has been a controversial topic because of the wide variance in research. Some research has found a difference between the genders in mathematics while others argue there is no difference in mathematical achievement. The Seven Clever Piece Tangrams were used in the mixed method study as the instrument of spatial reasoning tasks. Freshmen participants (N=719) from southwest high schools in a border town participated in one of two groups: control (n=247) and treatment (n=472). Of the participants, 379 …

The purpose of the mixed methods study was to examine the phenomenon of transphenomenal simultaneity between teacher and student disposition that contributed to the phenomenological conflict of teacher self-positioning and positioning-by-others toward mathematics, mathematics teaching and learning. The intent was to provide a view of self-reported and observed middle school teacher and student experiences in mathematics, based on the analysis of affective dispositional characteristics within the context of its complexity.

This study investigates the validity of the Likelihood-to-Act (LtA) survey developed to assess respondents' problem-solving disposition along the impulsive-analytic dimension. Sixteen pre-service teachers were strategically selected from a pool of 495 LtA survey respondents to participate in a semi-structured task-based interview approximately one hour in length. The interview consisted of three main parts: a problem solving section, a consistency section, and a classification section.
