A Compact Introduction To A Generalized Extreme Value Theorem, Nicholas A. Scoville 2017 Ursinus College

A Compact Introduction To A Generalized Extreme Value Theorem, Nicholas A. Scoville

Topology

In a short paper published just one year prior to his thesis, Maurice Frechet gives a simple generalization one what we might today call the Extreme value theorem. This generalization is a simple matter of coming up with ``the right" definitions in order to make this work. In this mini PSP, we work through Frechet's entire 1.5 page paper to give an extreme value theorem in more general topological spaces, ones which, to use Frechet's newly coined term, are compact.

Is It Engineering Or Not?, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lindsay B. Wheeler 2017 Clemson University

Is It Engineering Or Not?, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lindsay B. Wheeler

Publications

With the widespread adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States 2013), science teachers now aspire to integrate engineering into science instruction, as the standards suggest, yet many don’t know how. The first steps are to define engineering and identify tasks that incorporate engineering, which can be difficult and confusing. This article presents a simple explanation of engineering and offers a framework to help teachers determine whether a task is based on engineering. We also offer examples of how to integrate engineering in Earth science, chemistry, biology, and physics.

Beyond Problem-Solving: Elementary Students’ Mathematical Dispositions When Faced With The Challenge Of Unsolved Problems, Jenna R. O'Dell 2017 Illinois State University

Beyond Problem-Solving: Elementary Students’ Mathematical Dispositions When Faced With The Challenge Of Unsolved Problems, Jenna R. O'Dell

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study was to document the characteristics of students’ dispositions towards mathematics when they engaged in the exploration of parts of unsolved problems: Graceful Tree Conjecture and Collatz Conjecture. Ten students, Grades 4 and 5, from an after-school program in the Midwest participated in the study. I focused on the cognitive, affective, and conative aspects of their mathematical dispositions as they participated in 7 problem-solving sessions and two interviews.

With regard to cognitive aspects of the students’ dispositions, I focused on the students attempts to identify and justify patterns for labeling graphs. Overall, the unsolved problems were …

A Study Of The Effects Of Thinking Maps On The Achievement Of Students In Middle Grades Science, Lynn B. Hughes Akin 2017 Columbus State University

A Study Of The Effects Of Thinking Maps On The Achievement Of Students In Middle Grades Science, Lynn B. Hughes Akin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the usage of Thinking Maps® influenced the achievement scores of middle grades students in science on the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) over a period of two years. Science test scores for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years were analyzed by grade level and usage in SPSS and SAS, and after transformations were completed, non-parametric ANOVAs were conducted based on non-normal distributions. Science teachers were surveyed regarding their perceptions and usage of Thinking Maps®. The scores and surveys were then analyzed for simultaneous effects.

The results of the study for the …

How Question Types Reveal Student Thinking: An Experimental Comparison Of Multiple-True-False And Free-Response Formats, Joanna K. Hubbard, Macy A. Potts, Brian A. Couch 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

How Question Types Reveal Student Thinking: An Experimental Comparison Of Multiple-True-False And Free-Response Formats, Joanna K. Hubbard, Macy A. Potts, Brian A. Couch

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Assessments represent an important component of undergraduate courses because they affect how students interact with course content and gauge student achievement of course objectives. To make decisions on assessment design, instructors must understand the affordances and limitations of available question formats. Here, we use a crossover experimental design to identify differences in how multiple-true-false (MTF) and free-response (FR) exam questions reveal student thinking regarding specific conceptions. We report that correct response rates correlate across the two formats but that a higher percentage of students provide correct responses for MTF questions. We find that MTF questions reveal a high prevalence of …

Equity Of Success In Clasp Courses At Uc Davis, Cassandra Paul, David Webb, Mary Chessey, Wendell Potter 2017 San Jose State University

Equity Of Success In Clasp Courses At Uc Davis, Cassandra Paul, David Webb, Mary Chessey, Wendell Potter

Faculty Publications

We have recently described the reformed introductory physics course, Collaborative Learning through Active Sense-Making in Physics (CLASP), for bioscience students at UC Davis and argued that the course was more successful than its predecessor (Physics 5) by several measures. Now we examine the effects of these courses for different student ethnic groups. We find that, compared to Physics 5, students of most ethnic backgrounds were more successful in CLASP. We also find that students from ethnic groups underrepresented in STEM who took the CLASP course were more likely to graduate as STEM majors. We discuss possible features of CLASP that …

Contextualizing Developmental Math Content Into Introduction To Sociology In Community Colleges, Stuart Parker, Amy E. Traver, Jonathan Cornick 2017 CUNY Kingsborough Community College

Contextualizing Developmental Math Content Into Introduction To Sociology In Community Colleges, Stuart Parker, Amy E. Traver, Jonathan Cornick

Publications and Research

Across community colleges in the United States, most students place into a developmental math course that they never pass. This can leave them without the math skills necessary to make informed decisions in major areas of social life and the college credential required for participation in growing sectors of our economy. One strategy for improving community college students’ pass rate in developmental math courses is the contextualization of developmental math content into the fabric of other courses. This article reviews an effort to contextualize developmental math content (i.e., elementary algebra) into Introduction to Sociology at Kingsborough Community College and Queensborough …

Finland: An Exemplary Stem Educational System, Hui Fang Huang "Angie" Su, Nancy Ledbetter, Jocelyn Ferguson, La'trina Timmons

Transformations

There is a need for an increase in the number of students entering fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and the only way for that to happen is for educational reforms to be put into place (PCAST, 2012). Improvement and focus on STEM education are a concern of all nations whether they have an emerging economy or one that is long established. The world of the 21st century is such that in order to compete globally countries must invest in STEM education (Kennedy & Odell, 2014). The United States scores on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) …

Relative Rates Of Success Of Students In Calculus I, Joshua Ayerdi 2017 Western Michigan University

Relative Rates Of Success Of Students In Calculus I, Joshua Ayerdi

Honors Theses

Students that enroll in Math 1220, Calculus 1, can be categorized into two groups after completion of the course; those that are successful and able to proceed to the next course by earning a grade of “C” or better (pass) and those that are not successful and unable to proceed to the next course by earning below a “C” (fail). The Mathematics Association of America (MAA) has reported the national average of unsuccessful Calculus 1 students to be 25%. At the conclusion of the spring 2015 semester at Western Michigan University (WMU), the rate was approximately 40%. Institutional data was …

Prevalence Of Typical Images In High School Geometry Textbooks, Megan N. Cannon 2017 University of South Florida

Prevalence Of Typical Images In High School Geometry Textbooks, Megan N. Cannon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Visualization in mathematics can be discussed in many ways; it is a broad term that references physical visualization objects as well as the process in which we picture images and manipulate them in our minds. Research suggests that visualization can be a powerful tool in mathematics for intuitive understanding, providing and/or supporting proof and reasoning, and assisting in comprehension. The literature also reveals some difficulties related to the use of visualization, particularly how illustrations can mislead students if they are not comfortable seeing concepts represented in varied ways. However, despite the extensive research on the benefits and challenges of visualization …

The Effects Of Supplemental Instruction On Student Achievement In College Algebra, Rhonda C. Porter 2017 Albany State University

The Effects Of Supplemental Instruction On Student Achievement In College Algebra, Rhonda C. Porter

Georgia Journal of Science

College algebra consistently has a very high number of students performing poorly. An experimental study addressing student performance was conducted. Two college algebra classes each with 25 students and with the same teacher were used, one as the control group and the other as the experimental group. The experimental class included mandatory supplemental instruction for an extra class period per week. T-tests were used to compare performances on each test and homework. A repeated measures 2 X 2 ANOVA was used to compare the students' performance on a pretest and a posttest between each class. The Mann-Whitney U test was …

Teachers’ Incorporation Of Argumentation To Support Engineering Learning In Stem Integration Curricula, Corey A. Mathis, Emilie A. Siverling, Aran W. Glancy, Tamara J. Moore

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

One of the fundamental practices identified in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is argumentation, which has been researched in P-12 science education for the previous two decades but has yet to be studied within the context of P-12 engineering education. This research explores how elementary and middle school science teachers incorporated argumentation into engineering design-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) integration curricular units they developed during a professional development program. To gain a better understanding of how teachers included argumentation in their curricula, a multiple case study approach was conducted using four STEM integration units. While evidence of argumentation …
