Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
This action research observes instructional strategies and appropriateness of the strategies that pre-service teachers have applied during their training based on the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) training model. Participants include 14 pre-service teachers who were enrolled in a Distance Education training course in Taiwan. During the course, pre-service teachers were trained to develop teaching skills based on the TPACK training model and applied their skills in video-conferencing teaching which involved 14 American students who were learning Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) in an intermediate level course in the United States. Data were collected via screen recordings of …

Design Features And Academic Emotions In Educational Games, Yue-Xiang Zhang, Jian-Sheng Li, Yi Li
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the design features affect the players’ academic emotions in educational games. As a sample, 36 players were recruited to evaluate six electronic games on training players’ abilities to use the games. The researchers averaged their evaluation scores and considered related scales of three games concerning “Balance”, “Rescue” and “Gates of Logic.” Forty participants (19 female and 21 male) were tested on academic emotions and on the Learners’ Psychological Pleasure Scale. Results of this study reveal significant differences in educational games design features and academic emotions, such as a positive correlation between …

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
One of the things that make the Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange so interesting is the breadth of issues covered in each issue. This issue, SICET’s Volume 5, Number 1, is no exception. Topics range from rather “high tech,” educational games and virtual worlds to the cognitive application of scaffolding and wikis to the “hands on” use of gesture-based learning and field experiences.......

The Impact Of Outcome Intentions On Reading And Multitasking Performances, Lin Lin, Adrian Robertson, Jennifer Lee
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
This study investigated undergraduate students’ reading comprehension between two outcome intentions and three media multitasking conditions. The two outcome intentions were for accuracy and completion. The three multitasking conditions included silence, video background, and video test conditions. One hundred thirty university students participated in the study. Every participant completed two sets of reading, with two different intentions and in two different conditions. Results showed that the participants performed better in reading (a) when they strived for completion than for accuracy, (b) that the addition of an unobtrusive video (video background) did not inhibit the processing of the primary reading task, …

Development And Evaluation Of An Educational Computer Game For A Certification Examination, Gwo-Haur Hwang, Chen-Yu Lee, Wei-Fang Tseng
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Professional certification has become one of the important criteria for people to apply job positions in industries. Recently, computer-based learning has been widely adopted for helping students prepare for various professional certifications. However, most of the computer-based learning materials are not attractive to students, such that their learning performance is significantly affected owing to the lack of learning interests. Researchers have presented that joyful game-based learning can increase learner’s motive and pleasure. Therefore, this study builds a certification tutorial system containing two different modules that are the traditional e-version and the joyful game-based version. Moreover, an experiment has been conducted …

Field Experiences In Instructional Design And Technology:Legitimate Participation And Stolen Knowledge, Pearl Chen
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
This paper focuses on preparing effective instructional design and technology professionals through field experiences. A graduate-level internship seminar combining academic learning and onsite experience of working as an instructional technologist was analyzed through the lens of situated learning theory. Using a convergent mixed-methods analysis, this study examined the nature of learning that takes place in authentic practice and how learning is shaped by immersing in real-world instructional technology settings. The findings of this study suggest that legitimate participation in lived practice is conducive to active learning and engagement; moving from peripheral to central poses a special challenge for students in …

Scaffolding Facilitates Inter-School Collaborative Learning: A Case Study In China, Xiaoying Feng
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Inter-school collaborative learning (ICL) has significant meaning for bridging the educational gap between urban and rural schools. This study examines the effectiveness of three scaffolding conditions on learning outcomes in an ICL environment. One urban primary school and one rural school were selected to participate in the inter-school collaboration. Three 6th grade classes in each school were randomly assigned to one of three scaffolding conditions: lowest-coercion scaffolding (class A), highest-coercion scaffolding (class B), or adaptive scaffolding (class C). Detailed scaffolds were designed and developed to support ICL from 8 dimensions, including 18 strategies and 27 scaffolding tools. Both process data …

An Investigation Of Using Wikis As A Collaborative Tool For Teaching In A Non-Western Tertiary Education Classroom, Chun-Min Wang
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Wikis are innovative Web 2.0 tools that allow users to create, expand, and edit content collaboratively. This makes wikis promising for online collaborative learning, but further exploration is required to determine if using wikis can achieve learning goals efficiently and appropriately. With increasing globalization, it is useful to determine how students from non-Western cultures respond to using wikis in the learning environment. In this study, the author compares two Taiwanese undergraduate classes with different instructional design and peer assessment strategies to understand Taiwanese student online behaviors and learning preferences in a learning environment using wikis. The results …

Project-Based Learning: An Effective Approach To Link Teacher Professional Development And Students Learning, Shaoqing Guo, Yanjun Yang
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Professional development for teachers is a key mechanism for improving classroom instruction and student achievement, yet there is little empirical evidence upon which to damonstrate the connection between teachers’ professional development and students’ achievement. This paper presents a pilot research which adopts project-based teaching and learning(PjBL) as an approch to link teahcer professional development and student learning. In our longitudinal study, a resource-rich school in urban areas and a less developed school in outlying areas join hands to carry out a research project. Study groups were composed of 2-3 teachers and 10-15 students in each school. The groups from …
