Women frequently benefit from focused faculty development opportunities not because they need to be “fixed,” but rather it is a means to demonstrate that success, even in chilly environments, is possible. The Stepping Stones program uses a unique design to provide participants with inspiration, time for reflection, and strategies for how to navigate one’s career, through hearing about the journeys of successful women. In this article, we describe the program and evaluation results. Post-event and longitudinal follow-up surveys indicate that the program and its unique narrative format help to debunk the superwoman myth and leave participants with a sense of …

Since 2009, our center for teaching and learning has offered an intensive Course Design Institute (CDI) several times each year, which has now been completed by more than 600 teaching faculty, staff, and Graduate Teaching Associates from The Ohio State University. To better understand the impact of participating in a CDI on participants’ teaching, this study utilizes qualitative data drawn from five years of participant feedback gathered on the last day of each CDI, as well as from focus groups conducted with CDI graduates in the years following their participation. When the process of curriculum mapping begins with the faculty’s articulations of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students should master upon graduation, a curriculum map results that enables faculty to review the curriculum for effectiveness, see the workings of the whole curriculum at a glance, plan assessments, and recognize where adjustments or changes need to be made. This article explains these benefits and lays out a step by step process for building such a curriculum map that can be adapted to any institutional context. We also describe a variety of outcomes from and reactions to our process.

Secondary agricultural education has consistently faced a shortage of teachers for the past several decades. Because there are not enough newly qualified teachers certified annually to fill all the vacancies, attrition must be addressed. The purpose of this research was to develop and pilot test an attrition risk assessment instrument. Items were written and included in a preliminary instrument based on existing literature as well as a qualitative study we conducted previously. Principal components analysis resulted in a 25-question instrument, with 17 questions measuring attrition risk in four constructs including alternative career opportunities, expectations versus realities, passions, and people frustrations. …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) เพื่อศึกษากระบวนการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงตรัวของครูธงชัย สามสี 2) สร้างคู่มือการบรรเลงตรัวตามแนวทางของครูธงชัย สามสี วิธีการดำเนินการวิจัยครั้งนี้ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยการศึกษาเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการตีความ สร้างข้อสรุปแบบอุปนัย และนำเสนอเป็นความเรียง ผลการวิจัย พบว่า 1. ครูธงชัย สามสี เป็นศิลปินผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านกันตรึมได้รับการถ่ายทอดด้วยวิธีการ แบบมุขปาฐะจากครูดนตรีกันตรึมหลายท่านของหมู่บ้านวัฒนธรรมดงมัน เรียนรู้สั่งสมประสบการณ์จนสามารถพัฒนาตัวเองไปสู่ความเป็นเลิศทางการบรรเลงตรัวและการถ่ายทอด ลูกศิษย์ส่วนใหญ่เป็นผู้ที่เรียนอยู่ในสถาบันการศึกษาต่าง ๆ โดยแบ่งได้ 2 กลุ่ม คือ 1) ไม่มีพื้นฐานการบรรเลงตรัวมาก่อน และ 2) มีพื้นฐานการบรรเลงตรัวมาบ้างแล้ว ลักษณะความรู้หรือทักษะการบรรเลงตรัวของผู้เรียนแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ 1) ระดับพื้นฐาน 2) ระดับขั้นกลาง และ 3) ระดับเพลงชั้นสูง วิธีการสอนแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ลักษณะคือ 1) วิธีการสอนสำหรับผู้เรียนที่ไม่มีพื้นฐาน โดยมีขั้นตอนการสอนอย่างเป็นลำดับขั้น และ 2) วิธีการสอนสำหรับผู้ที่มีพื้นฐานมาแล้ว ซึ่งใช้วิธีการต่อเพลงแบบปากเปล่า ทั้ง 2 วิธีการใช้การอธิบายและสาธิต โดยยึดหลักการสอน 4 ประการ คือ 1) เน้นให้ผู้เรียนมีพื้นฐานการบรรเลงที่ดีตามแนวทางของตน 2) สอนตามระดับทักษะของผู้เรียน 3) เน้นให้ผู้เรียนฝึกทักษะปฏิบัติการบรรเลงตรัวให้เข้ากับจังหวะหน้าทับกลอง และ 4) สอนทักษะการบรรเลงโดยใช้บทเพลงจากง่ายไปยาก เนื้อหาสาระที่ครูให้ความสำคัญในการถ่ายทอด คือ พื้นฐานการบรรเลงตรัวเบื้องต้นที่ถูกต้องตามหลักการของครู 2. คู่มือการฝึกทักษะการบรรเลงตรัวตามแนวทางของครูธงชัย สามสี ประกอบด้วยคำชี้แจงในการใช้คู่มือ เนื้อหาสาระที่จำเป็นสำหรับการฝึกทักษะการบรรเลงตรัว วิธีการฝึกทักษะการบรรเลง ตรัว การประเมินผล และแหล่งข้อมูล

This essay examines print literature targeting American mothers of infants from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1950s, analyzing text excerpts from “baby books” spanning six decades and providing background illuminating those texts and their authors. Books authored by Benjamin Spock, Arnold Gesell, and John B. Watson are reviewed, along with work of less well known but widely read authors Emmett Holt, Herman Bundesen, and others. The “School-to-Prison pipeline” is an ongoing challenge and trend in the public school system in America due to inequity in the educational system, discriminatory policies towards students and families of color, and a lack of resources aimed at supporting at-risk youth and the economically disadvantaged within the community. The purpose of this correlational study was to discover the impact of texting on writing achievement for middle school students. The theory guiding this study is Vygotsky’s Social Cognitive Theory (Newman & Holzman, 2013) as it explains that learning is influenced by one’s social environment. My project explores the role of teachers at Southern California continuation high schools as it relates to serving low-income students of color in the face of the institutional barriers within alternative education. My study focuses on the teachers’ career, interactions with students, and opinions on accessibility to resources and funding. I have examined their experiences through twenty in-depth, semi-structured interviews with teachers from three districts. My findings indicate that district members’ misconceptions of Latinx students as inherently deviant and academically unengaged drive institutional issues creating financial burden for which teachers are forced to compensate. It is common knowledge that middle- and upper-class parents tend to disfavor urban public schools, and often move to suburbs in order to avoid having to send their children to those schools.
