This study examines a school-museum partnership between, a public school in Lower Manhattan, and a historical society located in New York City. Utilizing the theoretical framework of Activity Theory and the concept of Boundary Crossing, this research examines the school-museum partnership between P.S. 1994 and the historical society. The partnership between these two institutions has existed for the past six years, which situates it as an example of a long-term, successful collaboration between two organizations. This study examines if competition in the classroom is more of a motivating or declining factor. I am examining the positive and negative effects of competitions on students. Games and individual worksheets will be employed to explore influence on academic achievement. Through my research, I did not find competition to be motivating for students. However, I did find the competition intervention to provide higher average quiz scores.

Sexual Violence Prevention Education At Clark University: A Study Of First Year Programming, Elyana Kadish

This is a study of the sexual violence prevention education programs offered at Clark University. The data analyzed were anonymous feedback forms, evaluation forms, and Pre and Post-Tests. The researcher examined this data, along with literature on the subject of campus assault and violence prevention programs, to understand if Clark's programming (1) creates a set of community expectations, (2) provides students with language and conceptualization tools and (3) influences social norms and intent to intervene in violent situations. The purpose of this study was the program evaluation of a special education day school for students with emotional disabilities by analyzing data from the perspectives of the staff employed by the day school and the parents of students enrolled in the day school. The evaluation will enable the day school to make decisions about which aspects of the program to continue, strengthen, or discontinue.

Competency-based education (CBE) has been around since the late 1800s but has recently served as a revamped pedagogy designed to respond to some of higher education’s most pressing issues today: low degree attainment and problems of equity; lack of alignment between education and the job market; low and slow graduation rates; high tuition; and poor academic quality. Despite the promises of CBE to resolve these issues, the approach to learning lacks much empirical data. My research looks at organizational behavior as a resource to beleveraged for human learning. Two theoretical constructs guided this research, Team Member Exchange theory (TMX) and Social Network Analysis theory (SNA). The data for this research were derived from a case study of a subpopulation of the AMBER Alert organizationin Mexico.While no results were statistically significant, there was a weak association between the perceived support on the team (TMX) and the perceived strength of dyadic relationships (SNA) based on measures of outbound degree centrality (r>0.3). Over the course of the project, I have developed a brand with a logo and a live website to provide information and resources both for prospective and enrolled families. The second half of the project is a survey study of parents of preschoolers to investigate how preschool websites influence parents’ preschool selection. This study examined the impact of a natural learning environment on the social-emotional development of students with Autism and/or Sensory Processing Disorder. For this research, social-emotional development consisted of social behavior, communication, and participation. The elements of a traditional classroom are characterized by confinement, harsh lighting/acoustics, and other habitual triggers for sensory discomfort. A natural learning environment can provide students with natural stimuli, fresh air, natural acoustics, natural lighting, etc. Additionally, the natural learning environment fosters a connection with nature, which research shows is important for the self-discovery, self-advocacy, and self-efficacy of all humans. This capstone was done through the Maxwell Citizenship and Civic Engagement program (CCE) and SU Literacy Corps (SULC). The Cultural Competence Development Training Design created from this project will be reviewed for the Fall 2018 semester. The action plan created a mandatory cultural competence training workshop in order to engage SULC tutors in initial conversations about a range of topics that are important for developing cultural competence.

Funding higher education is among the critical financial decisions made by individuals and families. There are myriad options. Yet, the conventional wisdom—namely using Section 529 Plans—may not be the optimal vehicle to effectuate this goal. Therefore, this Article discusses various strategies to plan, save, and pay for higher education. It compares various savings methods including gifts, UTMA accounts, Section 529 Plans, trusts, and other vehicles. The analysis explores both tax and non-tax considerations, including the effect of different strategies on financial aid, transaction costs, investor control, income taxes, gift and estate taxes, flexibility, and creditor protection. The predictor variable of grit to the criterion variable of self-efficacy for pre-service teachers enrolled in a teacher preparation program at a Mid-Atlantic university was studied. This multiple-case study examined the practices of academic support providers who offered supplemental services for students with learning or attention differences at postsecondary institutions. Students with learning or attention differences transitioning to postsecondary institutions may need assistance developing self-advocacy through practice. The study employed self-determination theory and positive psychology (Deci & Ryan, 2002; Seligman, 2011), asking the central research question, "How do academic support providers at postsecondary institutions offer shared-advocacy, promoting intrinsic motivation through accommodative intervention strategies for students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD?"
