Serving Students With Special Needs During Covid-19 Pandemic, Tara Redenius

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has largely disrupted every aspect of human life. At the height of the pandemic, the states governments' suspended in-person learning in the United States to reduce coronavirus spread through human contact. The suspension was followed by policies enabling the implementation of online learning for all students with special needs, caregivers, and educators in different ways. The closure of schools has disrupted student's routine, made caregivers assume the teacher's role, and required educators to shift to online learning. This literature review evaluates changes in managing students with special needs by highlighting the shift in teaching, …

Influence Of Learner Motivational Dispositions On Mooc Completion, Robert L. Moore, Chuang Wang

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This study examined the role motivational dispositions had on completing a massive open online course (MOOC) using identifiable data from 10,726 students who enrolled in an iteration of the HarvardX MOOC, Super Earths and Life. As part of the course registration process, learners had the option to complete a pre-course survey and self-report information including their level of education, gender and registration motivations. Using these pre-course survey responses, latent profiles linked to learners’ course performance were created. Results showed education background, gender, and motivation were all significantly related to students’ performance. Furthermore, students with intrinsic motivational dispositions performed better than …

Does Instructor Quality Affect Student Performance In A College Statistics Course?, John Griffith, Emily Faulconer, Bobby Mcmasters

Publications

Various instructor qualities have been shown to have variable influences student outcomes in online courses. In this study, the impact of faculty quality on student performance was examined by comparing student performance when taught by excellent faculty and average faculty (determined through administrative evaluations). We examined 328 student grades from a 2019 January term 200 level elementary statistics course. Student performance measures included final course scores, grade distributions and pass rates. Learning modality (asynchronous vs. synchronous) and course design (e.g. syllabus, textbook, assignment and assessment design, etc.) as confounding variables were controlled through the template approach implemented at the study …

The Implementation Of Oral Assessment In An Introduction To Proof Course Using Multiple Assessment, Nurul Wahyuni Schraeder, Nicole Engelke Infante, Ben Davies

Graduate Student Scholarship

This study investigated how four assessors implemented an oral assessment when a little direction was provided to the assessors. We focused on the interrater reliability of oral grading and the types of follow-up questions asked. We observed three interaction types during oral assessment: no follow-up, follow-up related to the problem, and follow-up not directly related to the problem. As expected, assessors differed on several aspects of the assessment, including grading standards and follow-up experiences for students. Our findings revealed interrater reliability of oral grading with three-point scale was excellent, but not so much when six-point scale was implemented. Moreover, we …

Taking Into Account Interpersonal Aspects Of Teacher Feedback: Principles Of Responding To Student Writing (Republication), Elena Shvidko 2021 Utah State University

Taking Into Account Interpersonal Aspects Of Teacher Feedback: Principles Of Responding To Student Writing (Republication), Elena Shvidko

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Providing feedback on student work is a fundamental aspect of instruction and an important part of the learning process. A considerable amount of literature describes the pedagogical value of different types of feedback—explicit vs. implicit, comprehensive vs. selective, direct vs. indirect, and feedback on content vs. feedback on form—thus treating feedback primarily as an instructional/informational phenomenon. It must be remembered, however, that there is a real person behind each paper; therefore, interpersonal aspects of teacher feedback should not be disregarded. This article discusses five principles of responding to student writing that take into account this interpersonal nature of feedback: providing …

The Value Of Instructor Interactivity In The Online Classroom, Greg Lucas, Gary Cao, Shaunna Waltemeyer, B. Jean Mandernach, Helen G. Hammond

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

As the number of faculty teaching online continues to grow, so has the interest in and understanding of the role of instructor interaction in the online classroom. Online education provides a unique platform in which course design and teaching are independent factors. Understanding faculty and student perceptions about the shifting role of instructor interaction in the online classroom can provide insight on policies and procedures that can support student learning through student-instructor interaction. Participants included faculty and students responding to an anonymous online survey who indicated “online” as their primary mode of teaching. Three key “value” themes emerged as significantly …

A Virtual Ell Community: Manual For Creating An Ell District Website, Brooke Norvish

MA TESOL Collection

Abstract

Every public school district has the responsibility to provide their English language learners (ELLs) with reliable and accessible resources. Many communities do this through various avenues, including in-person and online materials. Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, there is an even greater need to provide information online. Many schools are bouncing between hybrid and fully remote programs. Some families are opting to homeschool regardless if their district offers in-person classes or not. Supporting these families and keeping them up to date on how to navigate these challenging times is essential. This materials development project will seek to fill this need by …

Administrative Rhetorical Mindfulness: A Professional Development Framework For Administrators In Higher Education, Melvin E. Beavers

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

As part of the post-secondary educational landscape, online programs and courses help institutions reach and enroll more students. To meet the needs of increased enrollments in online education, part-time faculty are often hired to teach online courses. Part-time contingent faculty represent a growing majority across many fields of study in colleges and universities. As Rendahl & Breuch reported, first-year courses, specifically freshman composition, are increasingly taught online. This study uses a mixed-methods design to examine how, and in what ways, writing program administrators (WPAs) approach preparing part-time faculty to teach writing online. The findings reveal that WPAs often encounter workload …

Test-Driving The Pilot: Experiences Creating And Using A Digital Information Literacy Course, Anne Barnhart, Melanie Lewis, Maurine Parker

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In Spring and Summer 2020 librarians at a mid-size university created online information literacy course modules with auto-graded content. These digital learning objects were designed to be used as graded content within courses across disciplines. In Fall 2020, the first iteration of the online course was piloted in several courses ranging from second-year undergraduates to first-year graduate students. One of the courses that participated in the pilot was a graduate-level course in the media specialist program. These students used the information literacy course both as a way to learn how to use the library and as a learning object for …

Getting Active During Covid-19: Incorporating Experiential Learning In Online Instruction, John Siegel

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Like other academic libraries, librarians at a regional comprehensive university had to switch from in-person to online synchronous information literacy sessions due to COVID-19. The Coordinator of Information Literacy has served as psychology librarian for over two years and worked with faculty to incorporate library instruction in all sections of the required research methods and senior seminar courses. Active learning was a central component of these in-person sessions, which included database searching and an exercise for students to understand the difference between primary/empirical and secondary/review literature. He quickly discovered that the small group activities did not readily lend themselves to …

The Writing For Healing And Transformation Project, Heather Elizabeth Osborn 2021 Kutztown University of Pennsylvania

The Writing For Healing And Transformation Project, Heather Elizabeth Osborn

Education Doctorate Dissertations

As a qualitative action research study, the purpose of The Writing for Healing and Transformation Project was to facilitate more inclusive writing strategies and to promote individual and collective healing on issues of social suffering and oppression (Kleinman, Das, & Lock, 1997; Pennebaker & Smyth, 2016) for diverse students at a community college located in the northeastern United States. The 18 participants in the study included students in my English II literature and composition course. The theoretical framework encompassed Pennebaker’s (2016) “writing for healing” paradigm, advocating the use of expressivist writing and “social suffering theory,” examining how power structures affect …

Care Ethics In Online Teaching, Colette Rabin 2021 San Jose State University

Care Ethics In Online Teaching, Colette Rabin

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

As a teacher educator, I sought to understand how to cultivate care ethics in my online teaching over a three-year period. Through surveys, student work, interviews, my course materials and teaching journal, and video-ed synchronous class sessions with seven cohorts of teacher candidates, the lenses of care ethics revealed particular challenges and possibilities for care with authentic modeling through story, practice and continuity, dialogue, and addressing power and confirmation in assessment. The self-study process helped me uncover my own assumptions to carve out better ways to cultivate caring relationships in the distanced and disembodied online environment.
