Are Universities Using The Right Assessment Tools During The Pandemic And Crisis Times?, Mohanad Halaweh

All industries have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and have worked to develop alternative strategies and actions to survive and continue business operations; the education sector is no exception. University administrators and instructors have faced challenges in finding the appropriate mechanisms to manage the final examination process. This essay suggests that project-based learning (PBL) assessment could be an effective alternative to online examinations. It advocates the adoption of PBL by highlighting the challenges/pitfalls associated with online exams supported by proctoring software tools.

With the growing trend of online education and the increased enrollment of students with disabilities, institutions of higher learning find themselves experiencing increased challenges to service the diverse needs of its students with disabilities. The purpose of this quantitative study was to gain insights into the perceptions of students with disabilities, specifically with regard to their personal experiences with accommodations while enrolled in online courses. End-of course evaluations have been frequently used to assess teaching effectiveness and influence critical decisions about faculty contract renewal, future course assignment, tenure and promotion in higher education. This quantitative study sought to determine whether there are differences in student perceptions of faculty performance based on gender or faculty status (full-time vs. adjunct) in an online higher education environment. In their 2019 book Small Teaching Online, Flower Darby and James M. Lang present a model for online instruction that uses what the authors call the “small teaching” approach, which posits that college faculty should look for small, high-impact changes they can make to their teaching practice in place of wholesale overhauls. The authors explore the unique challenges that online learners struggle with, from feeling disengaged to feeling overwhelmed by the demands of self-directed learning, then offer practical, sustainable solutions for each. Their text thus offers helpful teaching practices both for new online teachers and veterans.

This study examined the motivating factors and self-determined behaviours of adult learners in independent piano learning through a piano learning app. It employed the narrative inquiry method to gather stories and detailed experiences from the participants through participant interviews, participant journals and self-reflexivity of the researcher. Five working adults from the Klang Valley were recruited to take part in this study and each had a different motivation for piano learning. The dynamics of gravitating astrophysical systems such as black holes and neutron stars are fascinatingly complex, offer some of nature's most spectacular phenomena, and capture the public's imagination in ways that few subjects can. Here, we describe AstroDance, a multi-media project to engage deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in astronomy and gravitational physics. AstroDance incorporates multiple means of representation of scientific concepts and was performed primarily for secondary and post-secondary audiences at ~20 venues in the northeastern US prior to the historic first detection of gravitational waves.
