Chinese-Speaking Undergraduates In Australia: A Lexical Approach To Teaching Academic Writing, Qin Chen, Anne Thwaite, Brian Moon 2023 Edith Cowan University

Chinese-Speaking Undergraduates In Australia: A Lexical Approach To Teaching Academic Writing, Qin Chen, Anne Thwaite, Brian Moon

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Chinese-speaking students enroll in Australian tertiary institutions in large numbers. Success for these international students is heavily dependent upon their mastering the conventions of academic writing in English. How best to ensure such mastery among EAL learners has been a matter of debate among tertiary educators and language specialists, with competing theories and methods proposed. This paper reports on an attempt to improve English academic writing through intensive lexical instruction, a method proposed by Ackermann & Chen (2013), Boers et al. (2016), Lewis (1993), Selivan (2018), Wray (2005, 2018) and others. Nine Chinese-speaking tertiary students were offered training in recognising …

Minority Language Education In Russia: An Example Of Social And Cultural Reproduction And Correspondence Theories, Nadezhda Braun 2023 SIT Graduate Institute

Minority Language Education In Russia: An Example Of Social And Cultural Reproduction And Correspondence Theories, Nadezhda Braun

Russian Language Journal

Russia is an incredibly diverse country, both linguistically and ethnically. However, Russia is often presented, and presents itself, as a monolith. Russia’s approach to minority language teaching further perpetuates this monolithic view by creating a hierarchical language structure with Russian at the top. This hierarchy is created through societal pressure, language requirements in the Russian education system, and the minimization of minority language instruction, in direct contrast to best practices for language instruction. Chuvash in Chuvashia and Nenets, Khanty, and Selkup in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug serve as examples of this linguistic hierarchy. This paper uses social and cultural reproduction …

Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction And Social–Emotional Teaching Practices For Linguistically Diverse Learners In The United States, Wing Shuen Lau 2023 Seattle Pacific University

Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction And Social–Emotional Teaching Practices For Linguistically Diverse Learners In The United States, Wing Shuen Lau

Education Dissertations

This dissertation includes two previous research studies with a central theme to sustain and advance culturally and linguistically responsive practices in literacy instruction, which are essential for promoting diversity and equity. This work highlights the need for a more holistic approach to English language teaching that integrates culturally responsive teaching and social–emotional learning. Culturally responsive teaching recognizes the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity in the classroom. Social–emotional learning focuses on developing students’ emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, which are critical for academic success and overall well-being. Both studies call for a greater diversity of language teacher preparation curricula and …

Improving Second Language Learning Through Performance-Based Assessment Practices, Maria Granados 2023 National Louis University

Improving Second Language Learning Through Performance-Based Assessment Practices, Maria Granados

Dissertations

From the time of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) to the present day, standardized testing has become the benchmark measure for student assessment and school accountability in the United States. Multilingual learners are a vulnerable population with more testing and accountability requirements than mainstream students. Not only are they required to learn a second language, but they are also assessed within the same standardized testing paradigms as their peers - native speakers of the English language. This study aimed to examine and evaluate the benefits of instructional practices and assessments that provide multilingual students and teachers prompt and …

French 203: Grammar & Conversation: A Faculty-Led Inquiry Into Reflective & Scholarly Teaching Benchmark Portfolio, Erica Schauer 2023 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

French 203: Grammar & Conversation: A Faculty-Led Inquiry Into Reflective & Scholarly Teaching Benchmark Portfolio, Erica Schauer

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

The following Benchmark Portfolio is the product of a full reassessment of FRENCH 203: CONVERSATION & GRAMMAR, an intermediate-level grammar course that serves as a prerequisite for students pursuing a major or a minor in French at UNL. Previously, French 203 had been a review course that covered the essential grammar structures discussed in 101, 102, 201 and 202 and invited students to practice these structures orally with peers in class. This new iteration of the course, however, seeks to broaden the reach of student comprehension of French as a functional tool of communication by requiring students to understand and …

Who Are Our Teachers? The Impact Of The Composition Teaching Practicum On Writing Studies, Maxine Krenzel 2023 CUNY Graduate Center

Who Are Our Teachers? The Impact Of The Composition Teaching Practicum On Writing Studies, Maxine Krenzel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For first year writing instructors, the teaching practicum is vital for navigating both the writing classroom and the institutions in which the classroom is embedded. The composition teaching practicum, or the often-required training course for new writing instructors, is where new instructors are typically first introduced to their institutional and departmental policies as well as to the field of Writing Studies. While the practicum is a course that is immensely important for new instructors, I have found that this course is nevertheless understudied, under- historicized, and—in institutional and disciplinary rhetoric—too often aligned with an abstract set of “best practices” that …

Diggin’ In The Racial Literacy And Culturally Responsive And Sustaining Crates, Jordan Bell 2023 CUNY Graduate Center

Diggin’ In The Racial Literacy And Culturally Responsive And Sustaining Crates, Jordan Bell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Racial Literacy first became scholarship in 2004 with Lani Guinier and France Winddance Twine’s racial literacy works. Likewise, Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education’s seminal work is associated with Gloria Ladson-Billings’ (1995) introduction of culturally relevant pedagogy. While racial literacy and culturally responsive and sustaining education scholarship appeared around the late 20th and early 21st centuries, these frameworks were being developed in Black educational spaces since their inception in the United States. These frameworks were created in response to rampant antiblackness throughout various periods of United States history. In recognition of pre-21st century Black educators’ contributions to racial literacy and culturally …

Home Involvement And Reading Achievement On Drop Everything And Read (Dear) At-Home Activities Of Selected Students In A Technical-Vocational School, Dyan S. Escuadra, Joanna Paula A. Francisco, Rita P. Rivera 2023 Schools Division of Pasig City - Rizal Experimental Station and Pilot School of Cottage Industries / Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippines

Home Involvement And Reading Achievement On Drop Everything And Read (Dear) At-Home Activities Of Selected Students In A Technical-Vocational School, Dyan S. Escuadra, Joanna Paula A. Francisco, Rita P. Rivera

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Reading literacy begins at home. Several studies focusing on home involvement showed that the engagement of parents leads to the improvement of their children’s reading achievement during primary school age. However, the changing educational and family landscapes in the Philippines pose a considerable shift in family members’ roles in assuming responsibility regarding learning facilitation at home. This calls for the participation not only of parents but also of siblings, grandparents, guardians, or other members of the family, who in this paper are tagged as home reading partners (HRPs). Using a case study design, this study explores the role of home …

English Lexical Borrowings In Chabacano Television Newscasts: Categories, Patterns, Affixations, And Semantic Fields, Luis Roberto P. Soliman, Armand H. Lee 2023 Western Mindanao State University, Zamboanga City, Philippines

English Lexical Borrowings In Chabacano Television Newscasts: Categories, Patterns, Affixations, And Semantic Fields, Luis Roberto P. Soliman, Armand H. Lee

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Lexical borrowings refer to the borrowing of words from one language to another to fill in certain words that do not have a direct translation to the local language. The study is anchored in the phylogenetic change theory made by Hockett (2008) and the deficit hypothesis authored by Kachru (1994). The present study explores the words lexically loaned from the English language in the Chabacano language. Raw data were taken for analysis from Dateline Zamboanga, a local teleradyo program airing regularly on both television and radio broadcasts. The borrowed English words were then tallied and sorted based on lexical categories, …

A Program Evaluation Of Prekindergarten Program In One School District, Alicia Eubank 2023 National Louis University

A Program Evaluation Of Prekindergarten Program In One School District, Alicia Eubank

Dissertations

I explored the potential impact of position and salary change on prekindergarten teachers in a public-school district in a southern state. I provided an educational, economic, political and moral/ethical analysis in partial support of this change for the district.

The current policy in the district is that the school year prekindergarten teaching positions are considered non-instructional. However, the summer prekindergarten program teachers are certified teachers as per state requirements. The new policy will make all prekindergarten teaching positions require state certification. This change would give them the financial pay and benefits included with the position change and keep them in …

The Influence Inclusive Literature Circles With Multicultural Literature Has On The Self-Efficacies Of 4th Grade Students With Disabilities, Brianna Norcross

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to determine what happens to fourth grade students with disabilities reading self-efficacies when they participate in inclusive literature circles with multicultural literature. The purpose of this teacher research was to investigate strategies to improve reading self-efficacies of students with disabilities, investigating what would happen if students with disabilities were placed heterogeneously with their peers while reading books with characters with disabilities and how that influenced their reading self-efficacies. Four students with a disability were integrated with their general education peers in their inclusive classroom to participate in literature circles for four weeks. The multicultural books were books …

Preservice Teachers’ Preparedness To Teach Writing: Looking Closely At A Semester Of Structured Literacy Tutoring, Hannah Carter, Jadelyn Abbott, Katherine Landau Wright 2023 Boise State University

Preservice Teachers’ Preparedness To Teach Writing: Looking Closely At A Semester Of Structured Literacy Tutoring, Hannah Carter, Jadelyn Abbott, Katherine Landau Wright

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Preparing preservice teachers (PSTs) as teachers of writing has gained attention in recent years, but little is known about their preparedness when engaging with student writers over extended periods. We examine PSTs’ preparedness to teach writing within a structured literacy tutoring experience to better understand the skills and knowledge of PSTs related to teaching writing. Results indicate PSTs contextualized writing instruction, considered clients’ affect around writing, and used data to inform writing lessons. PSTs were also grappling with specific pedagogical considerations related to writing instruction, offering implications for teacher educators and researchers.

Talking Back To The Elpac: Resilient Resistance And (Re)Imagining Through Ypart, Zulema Reynoso 2023 University of San Diego

Talking Back To The Elpac: Resilient Resistance And (Re)Imagining Through Ypart, Zulema Reynoso

Dissertations

Policies that label and track students based on language and race dismiss the voices and lived experiences of English learners (ELs) through forced fits and ideologies that devalue multiple languaging and ways of knowing. This qualitative study explores how an educator and 20 seventh-grade bi/multilingual Latinx students labeled long-term English learners (LTELs) reimagined how language is perceived, taught, and assessed across traditional schooling contexts and language policy landscapes. Drawing from LatCrit theory, Latina/Chicana feminisms, and dimensions of youth participatory action research (YPAR), this study centered both LTELs as jóvenes educados (dignified youth) and a conceptualized taller (studio space) to affirm …

When Culturally Responsive Practices Meet Social-Emotional Learning: A Guide For Educators, Sharon Ju-Ting Cheng 2023 University of San Francisco

When Culturally Responsive Practices Meet Social-Emotional Learning: A Guide For Educators, Sharon Ju-Ting Cheng

Master's Projects and Capstones

Many educators hope to give their students quality and well-rounded education while balancing all the contents they need to learn. Social-emotional learning (SEL) and culturally responsive teaching, however, are two areas that teachers seem to struggle with (Stark et al., 2021). Teachers have encountered situations where it was difficult for them to support their students due to the cultural differences between the teacher and student (Heineke & Vera, 2021). This lack of professional development in the culturally responsive aspect is concerning.

The shortfall of training leads to failure to apply these practices into schools. For newcomer students, who are usually …

Translanguaging In World Language Higher Education, Alessia Barbici Wagner

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Increased global migration and a myriad of other social and political factors has made today’s universities more diverse than ever. As a result, teachers in higher education regularly find multilingual learners from a variety of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds in their classrooms and must consider this diversity in their teaching. One of the ways that teaching can better serve today’s multilingual and multicultural student population is through translanguaging. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the intentional and unintentional use of translanguaging by multilingual language learners and world language instructors in higher education. Additionally, this qualitative case study …
