Going beyond traditional writing practices by utilizing a student-centered approach can benefit both student and teacher. In this essay, two high school English teachers present theories on student-regulated learning, formative assessment, and self-assessment in writing instruction. Then, they describe and provide examples of how these theories inform their writing instruction.

Vocabulary instructional practices are grounded in oral language development, neglecting the role print plays enhancing student learning. This article offers suggestions for early childhood educators to reconceptualize their thinking of print exposure with supporting vocabulary development. Suggestions of ways to incorporate print exposure into daily classroom routines are provided.

Natural language processing (NLP) is widely used to predict human scores for open-ended student assessment responses in various content areas (Johnson et al., 2022). Ensuring algorithmic fairness based on student demographic background factors is crucial (Madnani et al., 2017). This study presents a fairness analysis of six top-performing entries from a data challenge involving 20 NAEP reading comprehension items that were initially analyzed for fairness based on race/ethnicity and gender. This study describes additional fairness evaluation including English Language Learner Status (ELLs), Individual Education Plans, and Free/Reduced-Price Lunch. Several items showed lower accuracy for predicted scores, particularly for ELLs. This …

Teachers’ professional ideology and their involvement in out-of-school hours (OoSH) practices have been questioned in recent times. This study explores how schoolteachers understand their professional ideology in relation to their OoSH practices and how they explain their participation in private tutoring in addition to formal schooling. This study deploys a qualitative approach using in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine secondary school teachers in Bangladesh. The thematic analysis highlights a substantial gap between Bangladeshi school teachers’ professional ideologies and their involvement in private tutoring. The Australian Government is supporting the Government of Lao PDR to undertake significant primary education reforms through its flagship Basic Education Quality and Access in Lao PDR program (BEQUAL), including a new primary curriculum. Phase 1 of BEQUAL (2015-22) supported the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) to rollout the new primary curriculum in schools, starting with Grade 1 (G1) in 2019. Specific teaching practices were introduced, including active learning, student-centred learning approaches, formative assessment, and a phonics approach to teaching reading. Preparing teachers to meet the needs of multilingual students is the goal of TESOL and Bilingual education programs in higher education. What these programs use to determine what these needs are can vary by location, faculty, and population of learners. This qualitative study surveyed in-service teachers applying for their TESOL or Bilingual endorsements in a college in the southwest United States. Research questions asked about the challenges and successes teachers face in meeting the needs of multilingual students and used this data to determine themes.
