Everyone Is An Academic English Learner: Interactive Support In Mainstream Classrooms, Kyongson Park

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

This article is a report on an English language learner (ELL) teacher’s mainstream class observations, coteaching experiences with a local language arts teacher, and surveying with students for a semester. As Short and Echevarria (2016, p. 2) state, “academic language is a second language for all students,” and every student is an academic English learner. This study examines how teachers bridge the gap between theory and practice by taking on multiple roles in classrooms and providing diverse support (Gottlieb, 2015). The implemented project focused on creating an autobiographical book with students themselves as centerpieces. The main purpose was to provide …

Morphological Awareness And Advanced Efl Learners’ Listening Comprehension, Xu Bian 2017 Seattle Pacific University

Morphological Awareness And Advanced Efl Learners’ Listening Comprehension, Xu Bian

Education Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between morphological awareness and advanced EFL learners’ listening comprehension by deconstructing three multi-dimension constructs, morphological awareness, vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension. The variables under morphological awareness were compounding and derivational morphology; vocabulary knowledge included both reading and listening vocabulary; listening comprehension was assessed by two different listening tasks whose aural texts and response formats were interviews and multiple choices, and one mini lecture and the gap-filling. Participants were 152 third-year English-majors in two universities in China. The main findings were (1) morphological awareness was a significant predictor of listening comprehension when the latter was measured …

Applying Intertextual Literary Theory To The Secondary Literacy Classroom, Holly Sheppard Riesco 2017 University of Arkansas Little Rock

Applying Intertextual Literary Theory To The Secondary Literacy Classroom, Holly Sheppard Riesco

Theses and Dissertations

In secondary literacy classrooms, teachers work with students on developing critical thinking skills that translate into their writing. This thesis focuses on using intertextuality in literacy and other texts to create more effective critical thinkers and more socially conscious writers. In using an intertextual process, a teacher must combine several disciplines for it to be effective, including social constructionism in writing, reader-response theory, collaboration within in the classroom, and conflict pedagogy. All of these concepts combine to create the intertextual process presented in this thesis. Applying the intertextual process within a secondary literacy classroom can create a more socially aware …

Speaking My Language: Nurturing Augmentative And Alternative Communication Use Across Settings And Communication Partners In Early Childhood, Allison Grainger

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This paper explores literature on the topic of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) across settings and partners used by children who have Complex Communication Needs (CCN). Children learning speech are often able to develop expressive and receptive language skills due to exposure to many speech models and rich language interactions. Both the quality and quantity of these interactions help typical children develop language skills rapidly (Sennott, Light, and McNaughton, 2016). However, for children who use AAC, modeling is much harder to access. Sennott et al. (2016) found that AAC users see or hear about 24,000 words modeled for them (a …

Can You Improve Phonological Awareness With Skill Boxes Through A Five-Minute Daily Routine?, Lisa Holland

Children who have deficits in phonological awareness are at risk for a learning disability such as dyslexia. This is why explicit instruction in phonological awareness is crucial for development. Due to this, it is important to start assessing children on these skills in preschool and start interventions if they are needed. The purpose of this action research was to shed light on how crucial phonological awareness skills are for development and how if a child is deficient in this …

Is It All Relative? Relative Pitch And L2 Lexical Tone Perception/Tone Language Comprehension By Adult Tone And Non-Tone Language Speakers, Sloane C. von Wertz 2017 CUNY Graduate Center

Is It All Relative? Relative Pitch And L2 Lexical Tone Perception/Tone Language Comprehension By Adult Tone And Non-Tone Language Speakers, Sloane C. Von Wertz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Languages generally use musical pitch variation of the voice as part of their sound systems (Maddieson, 2011)—pitch variations that can be somewhat reminiscent of music. Music ability and/or training may influence language processing (e.g., Bidelman et al, 2011; Delogue et al, 2010). In particular, studies have concluded that there may be a relationship between absolute pitch and tone language acquisition (e.g., Lee, Lee, and Shi, 2011; Tillmann et al., 2011; Pfordresher and Brown, 2009). Other research has shown that fundamental frequency (F0) and F0 slope are crucial elements upon which native tone language speakers rely in tone perception (Guion and …

Twitter Application To Chinese Language Learning: Lessons And Suggestions, Jiawen Wang, Chunhong Teng

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Making a connection between the requirement of 140 characters and the need of intermediate-low learners of Chinese as a second language (CSL) to produce output in a less challenging environment, this action research engaged the college CSL students in tweeting practices. Based on the descriptive statistics of the students’ tweeting behavior and the students’ responses to the survey administered at the end of the semester, this article reflects and summarizes the lessons learned. The authors propose that structural designs in the form of projects or tasks should still be considered for social networking applications such as Twitter to be used …
