Creating Sustainable Education Projects In Roatan, Honduras Through Continuous Process Improvement, Arjan Raven, Adriane B. Randolph, Shelli Heil

Faculty and Research Publications

The investigators worked together with permanent residents of Roatán, Honduras on sustainable initiatives to help improve the island’s troubled educational programs. Our initiatives focused on increasing the number of students eligible and likely to attend a university. Using a methodology based in continuous process improvement, we developed tutoring programs, college preparation workshops, long-term plans for a local school, and solicited involvement by an island educational coalition. Lessons learned from these initiatives may be used to expand other efforts on the island and can be generalized to other programs in Central America.

Exporting Legal Education: Lessons Learned From Efforts In Transition Countries, Ronald A. Brand

Articles

A convergence of inward and outward-looking processes in US law schools creates both risk and potential reward in the development of legal education. As law faculties engage in the current process of changing the traditional law school curriculum, they should carefully coordinate a desire for internal goals with an understanding of external impact, realizing that this process is likely to affect not just US law schools, but legal education across the globe. Changes in the curriculum at US law schools should be responsive, not only to concerns about the legal marketplace in the United States, but also to the impact …

A Comparative Perspective On The Secondary And Post-Secondary, Christopher Metzger, Rebecca Maynard, Julie Vultaggio, Tsukasa Daizen, Sumonta Promboon, Kin Yuen Ip, Sp-Young Park

REBECCA A MAYNARD

This research critically examines the education systems of six nations (Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States) in order to understand and compare approaches to general and vocational education, with a particular focus on secondary to postsecondary transitions. It follows an interpretative paradigm, emphasizing collaborative qualitative interpretation of data based on both documents and case studies lead by the research team. Results are organized around four themes: (1) system structures, (2) degree of differentiation, (3) commonly held values and beliefs, and (4) postsecondary application/transition processes.

Globalization, Changing Demographics, And Educational Challenges In East Asia, Hannum Emily, Hyunjoon Park, Yuko Butler

Hyunjoon Park

In recent decades, globalization and regional integration have brought significant economic and demographic changes in East Asia, including rising economic inequality, growing population movements within and across borders, and the emergence or renewed geopolitical significance of cultural and linguistic minority populations. These trends have coincided with significant changes in family formation, dissolution, and structures. How have these changes played out in the diverse educational systems of East Asia? In what innovative ways are East Asian governments addressing the new demographic realities of their student populations? This volume offers a snapshot of key educational stratification issues in East Asian nations, and …

Rehabilitating Closed Schools: A Daunting Challenge For Pakistan, Wasim Qazi, Khalid Rawat, Shams Hamid

Wasim Qazi

There are 6034 non-operational schools in Pakistan's southern province of Sindh further complicating the work of the donor agencies; more than half of these non-operational schools (3843) only exist on papers. These shadow schools exist only to usurp international aid earmarked for education. Our research shows that proximity to the population; unavailability of teachers; and lack of infrastructure are some of the fundamental causes driving the closure of more than thirteen percent of schools. Our position is that a large number of these schools can be rehabilitated but that requires a three-phased plan. If implemented, proposed plan would enhance transparency …
