Evolution

Genetic drift can be defined as a random fluctuation in gene frequency. More specifically, it tells us that different alleles may increase or decrease in a population in proportion to one another over time, just by chance, rather than due to any fitness advantage.

Transforming Pedagogy: Changing Perspectives From Teacher-Centered To Learner-Centered, Sharon Dole, Lisa Bloom, Kristy Kowalske 2015 Western Carolina University

Transforming Pedagogy: Changing Perspectives From Teacher-Centered To Learner-Centered, Sharon Dole, Lisa Bloom, Kristy Kowalske

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This study used an online-structured interview methodology to examine the impact of an intensive field experience in facilitating problem (PBL) and project-based learning (PjBL) on teachers’ pedagogy. The purpose of the study was to determine to what extent the field experience had transformed their teaching. Data were collected in the form of online interviews with 36 participants who completed the gifted education licensure program at a regional state university in the southeast. The online interviews were followed up with telephone interviews with four of the participants. The resulting themes can be grouped under the major categories of teacher-related and student-related …

Perspectives On Equity In Gifted Education, Karen A. Kraeger 2015 Kennesaw State University

Perspectives On Equity In Gifted Education, Karen A. Kraeger

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Increasing pressures of accountability in education and calls for equity make gifted education a controversial topic. While much has been written about certain aspects of equity, such as underrepresented groups in gifted education, little research has examined a more complex view of what makes a gifted education program equitable. More specifically, there was no research combining perceptions of the different aspects of equity in gifted education-access, participation, and benefit.

This qualitative study used grounded theory to establish a coherent understanding of the current perspectives on equity in gifted education. Drawing on gifted specialists at the local, regional, and state level, …

The Impact Of The C. L. E. A. R. (Challenge Leading To Engagement, Achievement, And Results) Curriculum Model On Reading Achievement At The Third Grade Level, Robin Gale Puryear

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study, employing a quantitative component, utilizing a quasi-experimental design, and a qualitative component, utilizing a post-positivist research paradigm and phenomenology research tradition, was to determine the potential impact of the C. L. E. A. R. (Challenge Leading to Engagement, Achievement, and Results) Curriculum Model on reading achievement at the third grade level. Additionally, the purpose of this study was to better understand both students and teachers perceptions of the C. L. E. A. R. Curriculum Model. Results indicated that there were no statistically significant findings between treatment group students and control group students, following an …

Factors Affecting The Job Satisfaction Of Teachers Of The Gifted: A Mixed Methods Study, Mary Kathryn Kathryn Stein 2015 University of Arkansas Little Rock

Factors Affecting The Job Satisfaction Of Teachers Of The Gifted: A Mixed Methods Study, Mary Kathryn Kathryn Stein

Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods research study examined the job satisfaction of teachers of the gifted in a southern state to determine if the factors of perceived organizational support, teachers' sense of autonomy, and teachers' self-efficacy significantly predict job satisfaction for teachers of the gifted. The teachers are from a state that mandates services to identified gifted students, partially funds the services, requires teachers who provide gifted services to have graduate courses in gifted education, and evaluates services to students with gifts and talents. The open-ended responses of the teachers responding to the survey who have high job satisfaction and those identifying as …

Gifted Black And Biracial Students At A Predominantly White Gifted School, Clair Elizabeth Pople 2015 Portland State University

Gifted Black And Biracial Students At A Predominantly White Gifted School, Clair Elizabeth Pople

Dissertations and Theses

The underrepresentation of gifted Black and Biracial students is a pervasive problem in and of itself, and indicates a much larger struggle of disproportionality of Black and Biracial students who are not called upon or supported in efforts to meet their academic potential. Therefore, an evaluation of the inequity generated by gifted education is warranted. It is true that the majority of gifted programs are often predominantly White. Accordingly, Black and Biracial students who qualify for gifted programs may face unique challenges in their development of racial identity and their socio-emotional health.

Using ethnographic techniques, this case study explored the …

Gifted And Talented Selection Criteria Of North Carolina: An Investigative Study, Jan Darice Johnson 2015 Liberty University

Gifted And Talented Selection Criteria Of North Carolina: An Investigative Study, Jan Darice Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this research study was to examine the correlation between the alternative gifted selection criteria (e.g., Pathways, Gateways, and Multiple Assessment Combinations) used in six counties in North Carolina for the placement of selected Non-White populations into the gifted and talented (GT) program, in order to identify whether alternative gifted selection criteria were correlated. A correlation design was used in this quantitative research study based on the examination of ex post facto data. The paradigm for this study was pragmatism, as developed by Dewey (1938; 1964), in which it is held that truth is tested by consequences and …

Student Transition At A Residential Stem School, Olivia Kaitlin Gatten 2015 Western Kentucky University

Student Transition At A Residential Stem School, Olivia Kaitlin Gatten

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The goal of this qualitative study was to gain insight into which personal factors most affect student adjustment in a state residential STEM school. Factors from Tinto’s Model of Institutional Departure were used as the framework to capture the transition of gifted high school students from traditional high school to The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, a statewide residential STEM school. Tinto’s Model predicts college persistence using pre-existing individual characteristics and institutional experiences. These qualities and experiences were used to form questions about student traits and transition. Questionnaires were administered to Gatton Academy first-year students, …
