'More Is Caught Than Taught:' Parental Cultural And Racial Socialization Beliefs And Practices In The Midwest United States, Sarah Barker Ladd
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Parents are critical socialization agents for their children, especially in middle childhood. It is through parent-child interactions that beliefs, values, and attitudes can be particularly influential for a child’s identity and social development. In particular, understanding how parents socialize their children has important implications for their own child’s racial identity development and critical consciousness – and later civic engagement and social behaviors. The current study sought to investigate ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) and critical consciousness of parents with children in middle childhood who live in the Midwestern United States. Based on interviews and quantitative survey data from 28 parents, results revealed …

Understanding The “L” In Cslp Within The Literacy Conundrum, Julia Lynch, Andrea Perrone
Michigan Reading Journal
Rooted in culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining literacy practices (CSLP) focus on equity in education (Gay, 2000; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris, 2012). Our view of CSLP emphasizes integrating the arts into literacy instruction to leverage students' cultural assets, stimulating their cognitive processes and recognizing literacy's interdisciplinary role in learning. As we align literacy practices with state standards, high-stakes testing, and research-based methods, it's crucial for educators and society to embrace them. Traditionally, literacy instruction has prioritized written language, creating hierarchical structures that lead to learning gaps and inequitable opportunities. An arts-based CSLP framework addresses these issues by ensuring literacy includes diverse …

Intergenerational Programs With Older Adults: Elementary School Teachers’ Perceptions On Academic Performance, Jovette Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Intergenerational programs bring together two or more generations and engage them in shared activities that inspire, educate, and advance their mutual well-being. Current literature on intergenerational programs involving elementary school children and older individuals describes benefits for both groups. However, most studies concentrate on the benefits for the older adult participants. The purpose of this generic qualitative research study was to explore elementary school teachers’ perceptions of the academic performance of students who participated in an intergenerational program with older adults. The theoretical framework consists of four processes of modeling a social learning theory component. A purposeful sampling of eight …

Beliefs about the malleability of intellectual ability-mindsets-shape achievement. Recent evidence suggests that even young children hold such mindsets; yet, no reliable and valid instruments exist for measuring individual differences in young children's mindsets. Given the potential relevance of mindsets to children's achievement-related behavior and learning, we developed and tested the psychometric properties of the Growth Mindset Scale for Children (GM-C). Among other psychometric properties, we assessed this instrument's (a) factor structure, (b) measurement invariance, (c) internal consistency, (d) temporal stability (test-retest reliability), (e) concurrent validity, and (f) cross-cultural robustness in samples of US children (Study 1; N = 220; ages …
