This case study examines the efforts of a recently established public charter school in a diverse urban neighborhood in Brooklyn to create a school guided by the foundational principles of the Bank Street approach. The efforts to infuse the practice and approach of the school with a progressive ethos is set against the prevailing trend to create schools that deploy highly systematic and didactic pedagogies. The case study begins by describing the rich learning that transpired during a study of the Fort Greene neighborhood undertaken by Community Roots first graders. This case study begins by examining the Theater Study, a yearlong integrated social studies unit that serves as a cornerstone of the first grade curriculum at MidtownWest. As Midtown West is located in the heart of Manhattan’s theater district, the study is both an investigation of community and an in-depth exploration of, and engagement in, the many facets that go into the production of a play—from story, to script writing, to the many indispensable jobs, such as creating sets, lighting, and acting. Strategies that promote the development of language skills are recognized as important in early childhood education. For early childhood centers and care providers, there are also additional concerns that interventions which meet these developmental needs are both time and cost effective. This pilot study investigates the effect of indirect language stimulation (ILS) techniques on the receptive and expressive oral language of 4-year-olds, using techniques that can be easily taught to teachers and implemented in the classroom. Two preschool teachers in a southwest rural community in the United States were randomly assigned for instruction over a 6-month period on effective ways …

Academic Performance Among Homeless Students: Exploring Relationships Of Socio-Economic And Demographic Variables, Miriam Moore

This study examines homeless student academic performance, types of temporary housing used among the homeless, degree of stability or instability for families with school-aged children, child needs for academic success, the importance of parental involvement in a child's academic growth, and other known factors in relations to child student academic performance, with a focus on grade level and racial differences. A multiple linear regression model is used to test the hypotheses while controlling confounding variables. Statistically significant relationships are reported between race and academic performance, and grade level and academic performance. Practical and policy implications are discussed, as well as …

Whether that learning is derived from direct instruction, guided learning, or personalized learning, students generally are impacted by the teaching strategies used by teachers in an elementary classroom, However, many new 21st century teaching strategies stress the importance of recognizing that students' motivations towards learning and levels of development vary greatly therefore; students may require a more personalrzed approach when learning. While researching math anxiety the author came across common gender stereotypes implying: women do not perform as well as men in the field of mathematics, women experience a much higher level of math anxiety than men, and most women do not appreciate performing mathematical tasks. It has been argued by some that boys are inherently better in mathematics than girls (Halpern, 2012; Summers, 2005). However, according to international assessments such as the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study’s (TIMSS) and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), boys do not always outperform girls in mathematics (Mullis, Martin, Foy, & Arora, 2012; OECD, 2014). As such, something other than biology might better explain variations in mathematics performance. Writing strategies, such as graphic organizers and mnemonic devices, have supported students in planning in advance of writing and technology has the potential to alleviate the burden of handwriting fatigue for struggling writers. Furthermore, under the Common Core State Standards (CCSS, 2010), fourth-graders are expected to be able to use technology to compose essays across writing genres.
