The Value Of Inquiry-Based Science Instruction For Elementary Students, Jessica Renae Enger

This review examined the academic benefits of using inquiry-based science instruction in elementary classrooms. It also examined different ways teachers integrate inquiry-based instruction. Several studies identified increases in science content knowledge, concepts, and process skills as outcomes associated with inquiry-based instruction. Other studies in this review showed mixed or negative results for academic benefits of inquiry-instruction. This review also highlights hands-on investigations, discourse, and literacy as three ways teachers integrate inquiry. Findings of this review suggest inquiry-based instruction allows students to understand difficult science concepts, justify their ideas, and can create positive attitudes toward science.

Elementary teachers are being challenged to increase student's oral reading fluency. This can be attributed to today's high demands and focus on students fluency scores from required assessments, focusing mostly on correct words per minute. This project examines the history of reading instruction along with the five essential components highlighted by the National Reading Panel (2000), specifically, fluency. This project defines reading fluency and assessments used, as well as describing best practices in supporting and developing reading fluency in the elementary classroom.

Previous research on preservice teachers’ understanding of fractions and algebra has focused on one or the other. To extend this research, we examined 85 undergraduate elementary education majors and middle school mathematics education majors’ solutions and solution paths (i.e., the ways or methods in which preservice teachers solve word problems) when combining fractions with algebra on a multistep word problem. In this article, we identify and describe common strategy clusters and approaches present in the preservice teachers’ written work. Regular consumption of fruit and vegetables (F/V) may reduce the risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases, yet most American school children fail to meet recommended intakes. One proposed method for reducing childhood obesity is implementing school-based nutrition education programs aimed at increasing F/V intake. This repeated measures study examined the effectiveness of an eight-week F/V-targeted nutrition education intervention on elementary-school students’ nutrition knowledge, F/V preference, and salad bar consumption. A convenience sample of third- and fifth-grade students (n = 149) participated in the study. Surveys were administered pre- and post-intervention to assess F/V knowledge and preference. The purpose of this mixed methods, single subject quasi-experimental study was to measure if an adaptation to a group-based contingency intervention, known as the Good Behavior Game, lead to decreases in off-task behaviors for first-grade students with disabilities during whole group instruction, and if the classroom teacher viewed the intervention positively. Three first grade, male students with disabilities, their first-grade teacher, and the first-grade class were participants in the study. The study compares two different classroom management strategies in a 5th and 6th grade classroom using an iPad based intervention. The students participated in 10 sessions of a language and grammar intervention on the Moby Max program. During five of the sessions, the teacher actively monitored the classroom, walking around the room, and redirecting students as necessary. For the other five sessions, the teacher used data from the intervention and monitored and redirected students from her computer screen. The data collected included the number of corrections given to each student by the teacher, the number of minutes the program considered …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเปรียบเทียบความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ของนักเรียนก่อนและหลังการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ตามแนวคิดปรัชญาสำหรับเด็ก ประชากรที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ คือ นักเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ชนบท ปีการศึกษา 2560 ที่กำลังศึกษาอยู่ในโรงเรียนประถมศึกษาแห่งหนึ่ง ประเภทโรงเรียนรัฐบาล กลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ คือ นักเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ชนบท จำนวน 25 คน ซึ่งใช้วิธีการสุ่มตัวอย่างอย่างง่าย (Simple Random Sampling) เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการทดลอง ประกอบด้วย 1) แผนการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ตามแนวคิดปรัชญาสำหรับเด็กเพื่อส่งเสริมความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ จำนวน 21 แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ ใช้เวลาในการทดลองทั้งสิ้น 7 สัปดาห์ สัปดาห์ละ 3 ชั่วโมง เครื่องมือที่ใช้เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล ประกอบด้วย 1) แบบวัดความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ แบบปรนัยจำนวน 15 ข้อ 2) แบบสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งโครงสร้าง จำนวน 5 ข้อ ใช้การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลที่ได้จากแบบวัดความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ก่อนเรียนและหลังการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ ด้วยสถิติค่าเฉลี่ย (x ̅) ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน (S.D.) และทดสอบสมมุติฐานด้วยสถิติทดสอบ (Paired-Sample t-test) วิเคราะห์คะแนนเฉลี่ยผลต่างของคะแนนหลังเรียนของนักเรียนแต่ละกลุ่มตาม เพศ อายุ เกรดเฉลี่ย ภูมิลำเนา อาชีพผู้ปกครอง และความสัมพันธ์ในครอบครัว โดยใช้ค่าสถิติแบบ (Independent-sample-t test) และ (One-way-Anova) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า นักเรียนที่ได้รับการจัดกิจกรรมการเรียนรู้ตามแนวคิดปรัชญาสำหรับเด็กมีความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์หลังเรียนสูงกว่าก่อนเรียนอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 และความแตกต่างระหว่างเพศ อายุ เกรดเฉลี่ย อาชีพของผู้ปกครอง และความสัมพันธ์ในครอบครัวไม่ส่งผลต่อความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์ของนักเรียนซึ่งแตกต่างกับภูมิลำเนาของนักเรียนที่ส่งผลต่อความสามารถในการคิดวิเคราะห์

It is common knowledge that middle- and upper-class parents tend to disfavor urban public schools, and often move to suburbs in order to avoid having to send their children to those schools. In conjunction with Glasersfeld’s (1996) description of Radical Constructivism, we agree that any theory “cannot claim to be anything but one approach to the age-old problem of knowing. Only its application in contexts where a theory of knowing makes a difference can show whether or not it can be considered a viable approach.” (von Glasersfeld, 1996, p. 309). The purpose of this study was to fill the gap in literature and further examine the use of sensory diets in the field of occupational therapy. This study investigated the use of sensory diets among California occupational therapy practitioners. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data through a SurveyMonkey survey. The survey was sent out to members of the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC) and received 98 respondents within one month. Participants worked among various clinical settings and implemented sensory diets with various client populations. This study focuses on the highly expressive comic drawings of Amy, a child with autism. This study connects larger fields of research: the study of how people with autism spectrum disorder [ASD] process faces and emotions; and, research about artists with ASD. Amy's understanding of emotion was analyzed by asking her to view and identify humans and cartoon characters expressing different emotions. Her ability to illustrate emotion is tested by asking her to respond to various drawing prompts.
