Emerging Critical Literacy In Teachers As Novice Researchers, Jennifer Mitton Kukner 2013 St. Francis Xavier University

Emerging Critical Literacy In Teachers As Novice Researchers, Jennifer Mitton Kukner

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper explores the experiences of three teachers as novice researchers as they taught full-time in a university English language school in Turkey. Viewing the participants’ experiences as researchers through a narrative understanding of teacher knowledge and a critical literacy lens enhanced their critical cognisance of their positioning as women instructors in a higher education setting. Their research experiences were shaped not only by their classroom concerns but also by expectations and larger social narratives that lived beyond their classroom doors. This study focuses specifically upon English language teachers and acknowledges the intersection of gender roles and contextual constraints as …

Program monitoring and evaluation

Textbooks and workbooks have long been considered a critical challenge within the South African education system. The Department of Basic Education, South Africa (DBE) undertook a major initiative to provide Mathematics and Language workbooks to learners in order to accelerate progress towards Education for All, in terms of access to and quality of education. The DBE, with support from UNICEF, commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to undertake an independent formative evaluation of workbooks and textbooks in South Africa in the period April 2012 – February 2013. The evaluation of the Workbook project was formative. The study was …

Principals' Decision Making In Discipline Policy Implementation: The Lutheran Schools' Perspective, Katherine Jane Brandon 2013 Eastern Michigan University

Principals' Decision Making In Discipline Policy Implementation: The Lutheran Schools' Perspective, Katherine Jane Brandon

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This quantitative study examines the relationship of philosophical beliefs of administrators of Lutheran schools and the influence of those beliefs on discipline decision-making styles, job satisfaction, and other factors. The study patterns the survey work from William Perry (1999) and other theorists regarding philosophy and ethics. A theoretical framework postulates a positive relationship of objectivist philosophy with directed decision-making style and interpretivist philosophy with participative decision-making style.

The administrators from two Lutheran education organization’s listserves, through invitation, participated in the qualitative online survey. The investigation uses path analysis, factor analysis, and regressions to explore survey and descriptive data. Some contextual …

Problem-Based Learning In Action: The Development Of The Virtual Health And Wellness Centre, Helen Metcalfe 2013 Edith Cowan University

Problem-Based Learning In Action: The Development Of The Virtual Health And Wellness Centre, Helen Metcalfe

eCULTURE

Nursing education in Australia has undergone significant change over the past 30 years. Most notably, the transfer from a traditional apprenticeship model to that of a professional degree based course in the tertiary sector. Contemporary healthcare institutions demand graduates who are ‘work ready’ and able to ‘hit the ward running’. The demographics of the Australian population indicate that groups of culturally diverse individuals are seeking healthcare along with an ageing population of Australians who have unique needs. The growing demand for more highly trained, work ready nurses has landed squarely on the shoulders of universities providing comprehensive nursing education. The …

The First Global Google Online Marketing Challenge 2008: Perspectives Of Ecu Student Participants, Peter Ling

eCULTURE

University students enjoy experiential marketing education that involves live cases and competition projects. While empirical studies have focused on various marketing education disciplines, few have investigated live global competition projects in the integrated marketing communications discipline. This study explored the perspectives of Edith Cowan University undergraduate and postgraduate students who participated in the first global Google Online Marketing Challenge in April-May 2008 as an optional assessment in an integrated marketing communications unit, which is part of the Advertising and Public Relations majors in the School of Communications and Arts. Participation in the Challenge was analogous to Kolb’s experiential learning theory …

Teaching Applied Psychoanalytic Concepts With Online Assisted Technologies: An Australian Case Example, Sarron Goldman 2013 Edith Cowan University

Teaching Applied Psychoanalytic Concepts With Online Assisted Technologies: An Australian Case Example, Sarron Goldman

eCULTURE

The present report is a review of an Australian case example of teaching psychoanalytic concepts with online assisted technologies. It is a first attempt to address a hiatus in the extant literature. A descriptive account of the hybrid teaching methodology that was employed is offered through a consideration of: students’ online responses, the teacher-developer’s reflections on his teaching experience, as well as formal and informal student feedback. Despite the anecdotal nature of the study, findings lend credence to the suggestion that the online medium has an enormous potential for teaching applied psychoanalysis. Specifically the cyber-classroom contributes to interactivity, situated learning, …

Voracious Appetite Of Online Teaching: Examining Labour Issues Related To K-12 Online Learning, Michael Barbour, David Adelstein

Education Faculty Publications

A paper presented at the annual Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) conference, Waterloo, Ontario, February 16, 2013.

Distance education and online learning at the K-12 level is growing at dramatic rates in Canada, the United States and worldwide. Barbour (2012) estimated that there are approximately 245,000 Canadian students who are enrolled in one or more distance education courses. This figure represents approximately 5% of the total K-12 student population in Canada; up from the estimated 2.5% to 3% reported just two years earlier (Barbour, 2010). This is dwarfed by the rate of growth in the United States, …

4 Things To Know About Reading, Libby Duggan

Articles

Parents often ask me what they can do at home to support and encourage reading. I find myself repeating four main ideas, things that reading workshop teachers know that every parent, grandparent, babysitter, school volunteer, policymaker — well, everyone — should know, too.

A Faculty-Focused Course Design/Redesign Process, Pat Reid 2013 Purdue University

A Faculty-Focused Course Design/Redesign Process, Pat Reid

IMPACT Presentations

As a part of the IMPACT (Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation) project, faculty attend weekly developmental workshops. As these have become progressively more focused and interactive, we realized that many faculty members have little to no education in sound course design. As a result, a faculty-focused, backward design process was developed that offers a flexible, step-by-step model. The model provides both practical and theoretical background at each step, links to articles, videos, websites, and more for faculty who wish to delve deeper. Presented at the EDUCASE Learning Initiative (ELI) 2013 Annual Meeting, Denver, Colorado.

Game Design And Homemade Powerpoint Games: An Examination Of The Justifications And A Review Of The Research, Jason Paul Siko, Michael Barbour 2013 Grand Valley State University

Game Design And Homemade Powerpoint Games: An Examination Of The Justifications And A Review Of The Research, Jason Paul Siko, Michael Barbour

Education Faculty Publications

Research on educational games often focuses on the benefits that playing games has on student achievement. however, there is a growing body of research examining the benefits of having students design games rather than play them. Problems with game design as an instructional tool include the additional instruction on the programming language itself as well as the potential costs associated with new software. One way to mitigate these problems is to use Microsoft PowerPoint as game design software. While not intended for this purpose, MS PowerPoint is ubiquitous in schools and requires little additional instruction before students can design games. …

The Effect Of Argumentative Task Goal On The Quality Of Argumentative Discourse, Merce Garcia-Mila, Sandra Gilabert, Sibel Erduran, Mark Felton 2013 University of Barcelona

The Effect Of Argumentative Task Goal On The Quality Of Argumentative Discourse, Merce Garcia-Mila, Sandra Gilabert, Sibel Erduran, Mark Felton

Faculty Publications

In argumentative discourse, there are two kinds of activity-dispute and deliberation-that depend on the argumentative task goal. In dispute the goal is to defend a conclusion by undermining alternatives, whereas in deliberation the goal is to arrive at a conclusion by contrasting alternatives. In this study, we examine the impact of these tasks goals on the quality of argumentative discourse. Sixty-five junior high school students were organized into dyads to discuss sources of energy. Dyads were formed by members who had differing viewpoints and were distributed to one of two conditions: 31 dyads were asked to discuss with the goal …

Patterns In Nature Forming Patterns In Minds : An Evaluation Of An Introductory Physics Unit, Christopher Ryan Sheaffer 2013 Portland State University

Patterns In Nature Forming Patterns In Minds : An Evaluation Of An Introductory Physics Unit, Christopher Ryan Sheaffer

Dissertations and Theses

Educators are increasingly focused on the process over the content. In science especially, teachers want students to understand the nature of science and investigation. The emergence of scientific inquiry and engineering design teaching methods have led to the development of new teaching and evaluation methods that concentrate on steps in a process rather than facts in a topic. Research supports the notion that an explicit focus on the scientific process can lead to student science knowledge gains. In response to new research and standards many teachers have been developing teaching methods that seem to work well in their classrooms, but …

Parts Of The Whole: When Variation Is The Goal, Dorothy Wallace 2013 Dartmouth College

Parts Of The Whole: When Variation Is The Goal, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

The goals of higher education are a population of extreme variability in expertise, a diffusion of specialized knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, and production of strong K-12 teachers. Promoting these three goals has implications at all granularities, from the pedagogy of an individual college professor to the incentives and policies that shape systemic change.
