Gifted students are a heterogeneous group, inclusive of those of all cultures, backgrounds, interests, and achievements. Gifted students may not display any more or worse psychological, social, or developmental challenges than their peers, but they also are not immune from these challenges. Moreover, the nature of their giftedness may impact both how they experience a challenge and how a counselor might best support them. This article provides information regarding some developmental, emotional, and social challenges faced by gifted youth, as well as some suggestions for appropriate school-based counseling strategies.

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Co-constructed simulations were designed and piloted with senior occupational therapy master’s students in a neurorehabilitation practice module. The instructor served as the guide for the students through all phases of the case creation, simulation development, delivery, and debrief. The instructor facilitation promoted self-regulated learning (SRL) of knowledge and skill development through independent discovery and peer learning. This paper provides an evidence-informed co-construction simulation design with outlined stages, roles, and responsibilities for the instructor and learner. Thematic qualitative analysis of student feedback highlighted enhanced insight and SRL as a result of multiple role preparation, observation and interaction with peers, close interaction …

This thesis investigated the use and acquisition of slang by ELL/EFL learners. Additionally, it sought to better understand if slang is being taught in ELL/EFL classrooms, what are effective methods to teach slang, and if learning environment is a factor in the acquisition. Thirty-five scientifically-based research studies were reviewed to help answer these questions. The investigation also found 4 of the 5 of the studies, examining if slang was being taught in ELL/EFL classrooms, were providing lessons in slang. The present study reviews the current literature related to culturally relevant nutrition education and its applicability to student learning within a secondary school setting. Specifically, this study examines how a youth participatory action research (YPAR) framework can be used to introduce students to the Diet Decolonization concept. In tandem, these ideals seek to improve student nutrition through evidence-based instruction, while also remaining sensitive to students’ diverse backgrounds. A tentative YPAR research design is offered, as well as recommendations for researchers to avoid bias and promote reflective thought prior to embarking on this type of research.

The topic of financial literacy has attracted many researchers to study the various aspects regarding this issue. The importance of being financially literate has been shown by statistics throughout multiple studies. However, financial literacy levels in the United States, on average, consistently remain low, and only a small fraction of our youth could be said to be financially prepared for adulthood when they graduate high school. This is a literature review to analyze current design of financial literacy programs of college students. The product of this literature review with application emphasis is an Art of Reading class which addresses reading comprehension and the role that art teachers can play in contributing to achievement. The class is based on research findings and integrates eight strategies to improve reading comprehension. The strategies include: 1) promote self-efficacy, 2) set goals, 3) provide choice, 4) build relationships, 5) ease anxiety 6) teach reading comprehension strategies, 7) spend time reading, and 8) spend time reflecting. The Art of Reading class also includes mindfulness practices, self-selected reading material, and artwork projects based on the text.
