Theses and Dissertations

This mixed methods case study described and analyzed the 2004-2006 district-based principal preparation programs in Virginia. This dissertation explored goals stated in proposals for funding as well as program director and program completer perceptions of goals, content, processes, and outcomes for the 10 principal preparation programs that stemmed from the Commission to Review, Study, and Reform Educational Leadership. Data collection employed three phases: Phase I focused on the 10 grant proposals; Phase II involved semistructured interview questions centered on perceptions of nine participating program directors; Phase III investigated perceptions of 75 program completers who responded to a web-based survey. Non Traditional Superintendent: A Case Study Of The Transition From Military To Public School Superintendent, Luiza Miera Hernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In June of 2006, Urban School District appointed the individual who is the focus of this study, a retired Air Force Two Star Major General, as its new superintendent. Although the appointment represents the first nontraditional superintendent to lead Urban School District, it was one of several such appointments to large, urban school districts throughout the nation. This study investigates his transition from military leader to urban school superintendent, using a case study approach.

The study presents findings in response to the research question: How did the Participant transition from military leadership to urban school superintendent? The findings of the …

The Relationship Of Personal And Professional Teacher Diversity Belief Typologies To Average Student Mathematics Achievement In Middle Schools Serving The Diverse Populations Of North Georgia, Xiomara Reid Romine 2010 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

The Relationship Of Personal And Professional Teacher Diversity Belief Typologies To Average Student Mathematics Achievement In Middle Schools Serving The Diverse Populations Of North Georgia, Xiomara Reid Romine

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Prior research has indicated that teacher beliefs can negatively affect teacher behavior. These beliefs often include unrecognized prejudices/biases regarding diversity including race, class and gender, which can lead to learning, communication and achievement issues between diverse students and their teachers. The main purpose of this research was to determine the relationship of both personal and professional teacher diversity belief typologies to student achievement in middle level math class rooms in North Georgia in 2009. The study attempted to answer the following research questions: 1. What were the personal/professional diversity belief typologies for middle level teachers who teach diverse populations? 2. …

Trends In Tenure For Clinical M.D. Faculty In U.S. Medical Schools: A 25-Year Review, Sarah A. Bunton, April Corrice 2010 Portland State University

Trends In Tenure For Clinical M.D. Faculty In U.S. Medical Schools: A 25-Year Review, Sarah A. Bunton, April Corrice

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The number of faculty in academic medical centers, and clinical enterprises in particular, has expanded profoundly over the past several decades. During this expansion, the prevalence of tenure systems and the actual numbers and proportions of tenured positions in U.S. medical schools have garnered much attention. Some commentators have remarked that tenure, as a system, is vanishing from schools and that the opportunity for tenure-track appointments is declining, especially for clinical faculty. This Analysis in Brief presents data on the current status of tenure systems, the changing distribution of clinical M.D. faculty on tenure-eligible tracks, and trends in numbers of …

Measuring The Effects Of An Instructional Scaffolding Intervention On Reflective Thinking In Elemetary Preservice Teacher Developmental Portfolios, Rebecca E. Pennington 2010 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Measuring The Effects Of An Instructional Scaffolding Intervention On Reflective Thinking In Elemetary Preservice Teacher Developmental Portfolios, Rebecca E. Pennington

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study was designed to determine whether teacher portfolios can be validly and reliably assessed, to investigate the effect of an instructional tool on increasing the level of reflective thinking in elementary preservice teachers’ portfolios, and to find whether electronic portfolios designed and assessed in optimal conditions re present sufficient quality to make them useful in practice. Presumably, teachers who can reflect deeply on their work and its impact on others can improve the quality of their teaching. This study sought to answer the following research questions: 1. Does the Rubric for Evaluating Portfolio Reflective Thinking (REPORT) demonstrate sufficient validity …

A Comparative Analysis Between Skilled Nursing Facilities Experiencing High Versus Low Resident Transfer Injury Rates, David Joseph Weitz 2010 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

A Comparative Analysis Between Skilled Nursing Facilities Experiencing High Versus Low Resident Transfer Injury Rates, David Joseph Weitz

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The health care industry is under siege with muscular skeletal disorders (MSD), the vast majority of which are directly related to the manual repetitive transfer or repositioning of residents/patients from one position to another. Two purposive sample groups were selected from over 200 nursing home facilities and identified as the “high” injury rate sample group and the “low” injury rate sample group. The research study used a mixed method analysis with a causal-comparative methodology for examining the differences between the sample groups. The first research question explored: Did skilled nursing facilities with a high injury rate compare to low injury …

Postsecondary Education Of Students With Disabilities: Review Of Faculty And Of Students With Disabilities Perceptions For Training, Jerry René Alliston

Dissertations

The percentage of students with disabilities who are pursuing post-secondary education has consistently increased over the past few decades. To meet all legal requirements, postsecondary institutions have established disability support services for students with disabilities. One notable responsibility given to postsecondary disability support service staff was the training of faculty on various issues related to disability in general. The focus of this study was to determine the perceived issues of faculty to students and students to faculty, in a two-campus university system in the southeastern United States, in working with students with disabilities in postsecondary education on the six theme …
