Examining The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Service Quality, Student Satisfaction, And Intention To Persist At Higher Education Institutions, Denise Hardesty
Dissertations
The importance of customer service quality in business industries has long been understood and studied, but to a lesser extent in higher education. The usage and application of the term customer service in higher education has been debated by those in academia. Using a correlational research design, this quantitative, descriptive study was conducted at a two-year community college and a four-year public university. A modified version of the Perceived Service Quality (PSQ) instrument was used to survey full-time, undergraduate students at each institution to examine perceptions of service quality and whether those perceptions impact a student’s decision to return the …

The Perceived Impacts Of Therapy Dogs On Students As Viewed Through The Human-Animal Interaction Framework, Timothy Smolen
All Theses And Dissertations
This study employed a qualitative case study approach to explore the perceptions of teachers/staff members directly associated with the therapy dog (TD) program in their school. These perceptions were regarding the TD program’s effectiveness in (a) student social interaction, (b) stress coping and self-regulation, (c) engagement and/or attention, and (d) motivation and/or self-efficacy. The human-animal interaction (HAI) theoretical framework (Gee et al., 2017) served as a focal lens in this study. Data was collected from a middle school in the midwestern United States and through social media. Thirteen participants were from middle school and eight were obtained via social media. …

The Need For More Educational Leadership Pedagogical Knowledge In Early Elementary, Megan Hallissey
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
This exploratory, qualitative multiple-site case study examined how principals’ knowledge of early childhood learning, pedagogy, and practices (or lack of) influences their leadership decisions and assessment of teachers. Data collection included four different elementary school configurations and consisted of multiple data sources including the use of a video simulation. The twelve guidelines of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) and the Professional Standards of Educational Leaders (PSEL) provided a framework for thematic analysis. The results of this study show principals have a limited understanding of early childhood pedagogy which influences their hiring decisions when filling teacher vacancies. Additionally, results indicate principals’ assessments …

Discovering Necessary Administrative Supports For Co-Teaching In Secondary Schools From Core & Special Education Teacher Perspectives, Jeff Govier
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Numerous amounts of research have been invested into secondary co-teaching. However, results show that secondary co-teaching is not effectively occurring despite volumes of research information. Increased assessments, scheduling difficulties, and a vast curriculum are factors making co-teaching difficult. Another phenomenon found in secondary teachers is called the knowing/doing gap. Secondary co-teachers are knowledgeable of what is needed to effectively co-teach but do not apply their knowledge into effective actions within the classroom. The purpose of this research was to identify what school leaders can do to overcome secondary co-teaching obstacles and close the knowing doing gap. The objective of this …

Family Engagement By Learning Together: A Program Evaluation Of Webinar Series Targeted To Serve Title I Families, Jaclyn Couch Gibbons
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
School districts across the nation seek parental involvement to increase student engagement and academic success. Families from Title I Schools, in comparison to dominant culture, may have a minimal opportunity of involvement with their child’s education in respect to partnering with schools in comparison to the dominant culture.
The Department of Equity and Diversity and the Title I Department of the Research School District collaboratively created a four-part webinar series titled Community to Classroom Connections (#C3 Webinar Series) open to staff and community-at-large. The topics addressed through #C3 include Access and Opportunity, Pursuing Diversity, Building Efficacy, and Social Responsibility. Each …

An Exploratory Study Of The Trends Emerging From A Forced Shift To A Digital Interface On University Faculty's Instructional Design, Ann E. Feldmann
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The COVID-19 crisis upended the typical college experience as educational institutions had to close campuses and send students home mid-semester in the spring of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic left educators around the world with limited choices on how to move forward with high quality education for all. This abrupt closing of higher education facilities forced an immediate pivot to online synchronous or asynchronous digital classrooms for faculty and students and ushered in emergency remote teaching. While higher education has gradually expanded online offerings every year over the past twenty years, for many college students, classes were still in person until …

A Study On The Relationship Between Elementary Teacher Engagement And Collective Teacher Efficacy, Amy L. Falcone
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
School leaders are continually looking for ways to improve instruction and increase student achievement. Collective teacher efficacy has shown to have a high effect size on student learning. However, as educators focus on building collective teacher efficacy and helping students, these same teachers may not be completely engaged in their work. With the complexity of building collective efficacy and potentially a disengaged staff, this poses a challenge to principals who have limited time and resources to make the biggest difference they can. If a positive relationship exists between the two, then principals could focus on increasing teacher engagement which would …

Hope In The Time Of Crisis: Interpretation Of School Psychologists During Remote Learning And Reliability Of A New Measure, Alysha Collins
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Hope is an important thing to study. Hope has been shown to have favorable outcomes for students. It has partially mediated the positive relationship between socioeconomic status and academic achievement (i.e., GPA) in young students (Dixson et al., 2018) and it has been proven to increase college students’ GPA and their likelihood to graduate college (Snyder et al., 2002). Hope has also been linked to lower mental health concerns and increase work productivity (Lopez, 2013). However, measures of hope for adults in the school setting (teachers, school psychologist, paraprofessionals, etc.) are rare. Therefore, the development of a reliable hope measure …

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to inform program improvement for one Metropolitan University graduate educational leadership program by reviewing adult educational personal leadership development plans completed during semesters Fall 2019 through Spring 2021.
At the beginning of their educational leadership program, graduate students complete a personal leadership development plan, also known as the L3 Learning, Leading, and Legacy Plan. In-depth review of these plans resulted in understanding the professional context and individual professional aspirations of future educational leaders. The variety of aspirations and current professional context is a reminder for all programs of the complexity of adult …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Parents Choosing Remote Learning For Their High School Students During The Covid-10 Pandemic, Aaron J. Bearinger
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on the educational system at the end of the 2019-20 school year and into the 2020-21 school year. Lockdowns of schools meant a shift to emergency remote learning. So as the 2020-21 school year began, parents had to make choices about the best educational experience for their student(s). Parents in the research study’s district had the option of continuing with remote learning or sending students back into the physical classroom. This phenomenological study investigated the lived experiences of parents with multiple students at the high school level choosing the remote learning option. The …

The Rising Tide Of Child Poverty, Jane Beese, Melissa Mlakar
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Poverty is not a new struggle for families and students. Urban school districts have been plagued with high poverty rates for years, but now poverty is growing at substantial rates in suburban schools. Chronic absenteeism is one recurring problem that high poverty schools, of every typology, face on a regular basis. The case study presented here highlights the work of one urban principal in combating chronic absenteeism in her school. The purpose of this paper is to explore attendance problems in a high-poverty school. While this case study depicts a principal in a high-poverty school in an urban area, the …

Leadership Performance Of Dale Carnegie, Nelson Mandela And Lee Kwan Yew: Applications For Educators, Jean-Pierre Bongila
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
A biographical comparison or prosopography of three leaders Dale Carnegie (1888-1955) (Bacila, 2013), Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) (Kendall, 2014), and Lee Kwan Yew (1923-2015) (Kwang et al., 2015) might seem postmodern because of the divergence of times and cultures where they lived and the social statuses from which they performed their leadership. While Dale Carnegie was born to a poor farming family in Maryville, Missouri at the end of the 19th century America, Nelson Mandela’s family had aristocratic origins since his great-grand father was a tribal chief in South Africa (Lodge, 2006), and Lee Kwan Yew was a well to do …

James Doti And The 25 Year Transformation Of A West Coast University: A Case Study, Adejoke Kassim, Jim Zabloski
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Research was conducted at Chapman University, Orange County, California, to explore the transformational leadership practices of Dr. James Doti, professor of Economics and president emeritus of Chapman University from 1991-2016, who led its transformation from a sleepy liberal arts college in Southern California to a midsized university of national stature. The theoretical framework for the study was the transformational leadership theory by Burns (1978) and Bass (1985). This study investigated the president’s demonstration of the four components of transformational leadership as identified by Bass: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individual Consideration. Data collection was via interviews, document analysis, …

Next-Level Leadership: Preparing Assistant Principals For Campus Leadership, Jerry R. Burkett
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
The workload of campus leaders continues to increase with new expectations for evaluation and supervision, changing legislative mandates, and mounting pressures for improved school accountability. Educational Leadership preparation programs are built on national and state standards related to principal leadership and competency. However, while principal preparation programs have focused intently on instructional leadership development for future principals, most educational leadership candidates do not immediately enter the principalship but rather start their administrative careers as assistant principals. School districts can implement a comprehensive training protocol for their emerging principals using research-based practices to ensure assistant principals have the training, coaching, and …

School Administrators’ Leadership Practices With Non-Nuclear Families: A Phenomenological Study, Brian Andrew Randall
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the shared lived experiences of Central Pennsylvanian high school administrators’ efforts to address the barriers to parental investment for non-nuclear families. The theory guiding this study was the path-goal theory, which builds on motivational theory to select the proper leadership style to achieve the desired outcome. The central research question was intended to discover the essence of Central Pennsylvania school administrators’ shared lived experiences addressing parental investment barriers for non-nuclear families. Three subquestions served to investigate the school administrators’ experiences with parental investment barriers, motivations, and their ability to lead. …
