This research paper provides a comprehensive overview of studies focusing in on social-emotional skill development in early childhood and its impact on long-term outcomes in emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and problem-solving strategies. Drawing on a comprehensive review of existing literature and empirical studies, the research highlights the critical developmental milestones in social-emotional learning (SEL) during the early years and explore effective strategies for fostering these skills within various contexts, including home, preschool, and other early learning settings. Students with special needs across the country and the world continue to struggle to gain functional language and communication skills, and build a vocabulary to use throughout life. Research shows that augmentative and alternative communication or speech-generating devices can be a special, useful, and powerful tool for students' language skills. Based on a literature review of augmentative and alternative communication devices, early childhood, and assistive technology, an in-class study was performed in a Virginia Early Childhood Special Education classroom. This action research was inspired by the researcher’s interest to better understand teaching strategies to help students who are Dual Language Learners (DLLs) improve their English language, communication skills, and classroom engagement. The researcher wanted to know how modeling and visual cues affect the language and communication abilities of preschool DLLs in the classroom. Research findings show that early literacy skills are important in building children’s skills. Providing teachers with adequate trainings on implementing early literacy skills can allow teachers to build their children’s skills. An area of need is having an adequate literacy intervention for the children whose skills are not developmentally where they should be. With research findings in mind, a school improvement plan was created to revise the literacy intervention plans for greater student success. This plan improved a current literacy intervention plan to create successful intervention plans for teachers and create more consistency in each grade level.

The number of infants and toddlers experiencing toxic stress in the United States has increased significantly. Toxic stress, characterized by prolonged exposure to adverse experiences, has significant implications for the development of infants and toddlers. Roots And Refuge: A Critical Exploration Of Nature In Black Visual Narratives, Desiree Cueto, Wanda Brooks, Susan Browne

This article examined the underrepresentation of Black characters in children’s picture books, particularly in natural settings, and its effect on Black children’s relationship with nature. Through an analysis of four contemporary picture books, the study revealed how visual depictions challenge these exclusions and expand narratives about Black engagement with the natural world. Utilizing visual semiotics and the theory of Black Aliveness, this research underscores the transformative power of illustrations by Black artists in enriching children’s literature and advancing joy.

The use of decodable texts can support beginning readers in building a strong foundation for reading, especially when reinforcing skills taught in phonemic awareness and phonics programs. Decodable texts have a home within the science of reading, which can be used to motivate and inspire children. The purpose of this essay is to share my experiences implementing decodable texts in small groups to support beginning readers. I will discuss teacher use and implementation of decodable texts to support student application of grapheme-phoneme relationships and the strategies used to improve not only student learning, but their love for reading.

Human Capital At Home: Evidence From A Randomized Evaluation In The Philippines, Noam Angrist, Sarah Kabay, Dean S. Karlan, Lincoln Lau, Kevin M. Wong

Children spend most of their time at home in their early years, yet efforts to promote human capital at home in many low- and middle-income settings remain limited. We conduct a randomized controlled trial to evaluate an intervention which encourages parents and caregivers to foster human capital accumulation among their children between ages 3 and 5, with a focus on math and phonics skills. Children gain 0.52 and 0.51 standard deviations relative to the control group on math and phonics tests, respectively (p<0.001). A year later effects persist, but math gains dissipate to 0.15 (p=0.06) and phonics to 0.13 (p=0.12). Effects appear to be mediated largely through instructional support by parents and not other parent investment mechanisms, such as more positive parent-child interactions or additional time spent on education at home beyond the intervention. Our results show that parents can be effective conduits of educational instruction even in low-resource settings.

The purpose of this descriptive qualitative case study was to discover Second through Fifth Grade rural North Texas teacher perceptions focusing on reading and mathematics student achievement gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explores how the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown affected students not only academically but also socially as well. Through a qualitative case study design, this study collected qualitative data by interviewing seven-Second through Fifth Grade teachers through semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and MAP data by analyzing MAP data collected in the beginning and middle of the year from the 2019-2023 school years.
