Graduate Research Showcase

The main focus of this research is to provide strategies for raising awareness and promoting support for elementary music programs. This literature review seeks to empower music educators with specific strategies for gaining support for music education in a society where budget cuts are vast and the demand for improved test scores on standardized exams favors the increased attention to be placed on core subjects alone. Music education is proven to have many lasting benefits outside of music education alone. Key elements for creating and maintaining a successful program include; collaboration efforts, communication with stakeholders, community performances, highlighting the integration …

Repatriation And Conservation, Sandra Sardjono, Kristal Hale, Christopher Buckley, Saiful Bakhri, Absari Hanifah

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Textile represents one of the most important cultural heritages in Indonesia and is an integral part of social and religious lives of traditional communities. Due to colonial impact, shifts in indigenous belief systems and values, modernization, and tourism, many textiles have left their original environments. Many gained new contexts as museum objects housed in regional museums or private collections in Indonesia and abroad.

In Indonesian museums, these objects are cared for by museum staff with various backgrounds and levels of expertise, who are shifted to new positions every two-three years by the Indonesian Ministry. This methodology is intended as a …

Negated Identities In Dominican Art Education, Felix V. Rodriguez Suero 2024 Illinois State University

Negated Identities In Dominican Art Education, Felix V. Rodriguez Suero

Faculty Publications – Art

Drawing from decolonial theories, I explore the history of art education in the Dominican Republic in the first half of the 20th century. I examine how racial hierarchies were activated in art classes in school through the romanticization of the countryside and the mystification of children’s material culture. A distorted use of rural imagery served to advance the elite’s narrative of White Dominican identity and to normalize a racial imaginary that negated the country’s African heritage. I analyze how national and global discourses that coupled modernity with Whiteness encouraged aesthetic preferences that permeated children’s visual culture and national art. I …

Digital Art In A High School Art Classroom: Entanglements And Becomings, Nicholas Garrison Leonard

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate how Karen Barad’s theory of agential realism can expand understandings of cognition and creativity in the digital art high school classroom. Increasing advancements in digital technologies are presenting ontological and epistemological questions regarding the nature of cognition and creativity which current dominant approaches to art education are ill-equipped to address. Furthermore, over the past decade, the field of art education has called for an increased need in research addressing digital artmaking technologies. Since art education pedagogy in the United States has an established history of being inflected by popular theories of the …

Findings reveal how aesthetic teacher education can be therapeutic, aid in building connections between the teacher and students (and among students), inspire wonder and discovery, facilitate the valuing and including of cultural and linguistic backgrounds …
