This is the first study to capture data about how people engage with books, video games and TV/movies. The study’s main emphasis is on behavior with books, with demographic data in three age groups, five U.S. regions, and seven racial/ethnic groups. Books exist in a connected media ecosystem where the most important customers are avid: avid book engagers (4+ books per month), but also avid consumers of other media. It is possible that these people are the ones who drove the 8.2% increase in book sales during 2020. This study finds that customers who engage avidly with books do so …

Beverage Bottle Capacity, Packaging Efficiency, And The Potential For Plastic Waste Reduction, Rafael Becerril Arreola, R. E. Bucklin

Plastic pollution is a pressing issue because authorities struggle to contain and process the enormous amount of waste produced. We study the potential for reducing plastic waste by examining the efficiency with which different polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles deliver beverages. We find that 80% of the variation in bottle weight is explained by bottle capacity, 16% by product category, and 1% by brand. Bottle weight is quadratic and convex function of capacity, which implies that medium capacity bottles are most efficient at delivering consumable product. JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 17, 2021) – “Black Men in White Coats,” a documentary film by Dr. Dale Okorodudu, is available to view at no charge for East Tennessee State University students, faculty and staff through 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.

According to Okorodudu, fewer Black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978, and Black men have the lowest life expectancy in the United States. Only 2% of American doctors are Black men. In his documentary, Okorodudu dissects the systemic barriers preventing Black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences for society at large.

East Tennessee State University is saddened by the passing of Dr. Brian Odle, who died Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, at the age of 53.

Dr. Odle, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, came to ETSU Bill Gatton College ofPharmacy in 2007. His unique teaching style combined memorable storytelling with practical knowledge. Dr. Odle was loved by his students, as well as faculty and staff.

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 16, 2021)  – The U.S. Department of Education has announced that East Tennessee State University will receive the federally funded Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling $348,002 annually for five years to help more first-generation and low-income students and students with disabilities succeed and graduate.  ETSU has been a recipient of an SSS grant to support traditional and non-traditional students since 1976.

Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice

Social media has had an impact on how patients find and evaluate medical professionals and their experiences of modern healthcare. Qualitative research in healthcare has increased its focus on social media. The present study examined 497 reviews of hospitals in the Pittsburgh area across three websites: Google, Yelp, and Healthgrades. Using computerized content analysis tools (CATA), we analyzed positive and negative comments to identify key themes. Key themes and words included “doctor,” “hospital,” “staff,” and “time.” These findings highlight the importance of medical staff to patient experience. Results indicated that Yelp had the lowest average rating. CATA also revealed that …
