A Comparative Study On The Forecast Of Fresh Food Sales Using Logistic Regression, Moving Average And Bpnn Methods, Wan-I Lee, Cheng-Wu Chen, Kung-Hsing Chen, Tsung-Hao Chen, Chia-Chi Liu 2012 Department of Marketing and Distribution Management, National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, Kaohsiung, Taiwan

A Comparative Study On The Forecast Of Fresh Food Sales Using Logistic Regression, Moving Average And Bpnn Methods, Wan-I Lee, Cheng-Wu Chen, Kung-Hsing Chen, Tsung-Hao Chen, Chia-Chi Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Different prediction methods give different performance predictions when used for daily fresh food sales forecasting. Logistic Regression (LR) is a good choice for binary data, the Moving Average (MA) method is good for simple prediction, while the Back-Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) method is good for long term data. In this study we develop and compare the performance of three sales forecasting models, based on the above three prediction methods, for the forecasting of fresh food sales in a point of sales (POS) database for convenience stores. Fresh food is characterized by two factors: its short shelf-life and its importance as …

Applying Input-Output Model To Investigate The Inter-Industrial Linkage Of Transportation Industry In Taiwan, Rong-Her Chiu, Yu-Chang Lin 2012 Department of Shipping and Transportation Management, National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, Taiwan, R.O.C.

Applying Input-Output Model To Investigate The Inter-Industrial Linkage Of Transportation Industry In Taiwan, Rong-Her Chiu, Yu-Chang Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper aims to investigate the role and influence of the transportation sector on the national economy of Taiwan by using input-output analysis. Data from the period 1991-2006 is used to analyze the inter-industrial linkage effects in 33 sectors. The results show that the transportation industry in Taiwan has more strength in absorbing the products of related industries rather than being used as an input by other industries; it has a relatively strong capacity for pulling in other industries. Road transportation also has comparatively more strength in supporting other industries domestically. Taking the transportation industry as exogenous, this study further …

Modeling Pricing And Scheduling Strategies For Air Cargo Carriers As Non-Cooperative Games, Oliver Feng-Yeu Shyr, Yuan-Lu Lee 2012 Department of Urban Planning, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, R.O.C.

Modeling Pricing And Scheduling Strategies For Air Cargo Carriers As Non-Cooperative Games, Oliver Feng-Yeu Shyr, Yuan-Lu Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To develop efficient pricing and service strategies for air cargo carriers, we formulated air cargo demand as a Multinomial Logit model to reveal forwarders’ preferences toward freightage, flight frequency and service reliability. By applying non-cooperative game approach, we solve the market equilibrium to produce optimal freightage of priority and ordinary cargo for forwarders with various shipping volumes as well as the optimal flight schedules of air cargo carriers. In the case study, we found that the leader of air carriers would have not only the largest share, but also the highest freightage for both ordinary and priority cargo. And, with …

The Strategic Association Between Enterprise Content Management And Decision Support, Jaffar Alalwan 2012 Virginia Commonwealth University

The Strategic Association Between Enterprise Content Management And Decision Support, Jaffar Alalwan

Theses and Dissertations

To deal with the increasing information overload and with the structured and unstructured data complexity, many organizations have implemented enterprise content management (ECM) systems. Published research on ECM so far is very limited and reports on ECM implementations have been scarce until recently (Tyrväinen et al. 2006). However, the little available ECM literature shows that many organizations using ECM focus on operational benefits while strategic decision-making benefits are rarely considered. Moreover, the strategic capabilities such as decision making capabilities of ECM are not fully investigated in the current literature. In addition, the literature lacks a strategic management framework (SMF) that …

F.A.C.E.S. (Faculty Academic Community Education Showcase): Professional Growth Experiences In A Career University, Paul J. Colbert, Ph.D.

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

Institutes of higher education exist for the purpose of developing, fostering, nurturing, and stimulating the intellectual growth and development of students. The core values of a college education provide students conceptual and practical educational opportunities that focus on improving their skills and knowledge. These skills and knowledge translate into purposeful, real-life learning experiences. However, in the academic community, learning is not restricted to students. Faculty, too, must be supported and provided opportunities for personal and professional growth and development. Although professional development is not a novel concept in the education profession, schools often take up the gauntlet, but fall short …

The Adaptation Of Cloud Computing By The Hotel Industry, Anthony Schneider

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The concept of cloud computing has many benefits for the hotel industry. The migration to cloud computing is expected to have a major impact on the way that information and computer resources are handled by the hotel industry. Investment in technology must bring value to a business whether it’s a large international hotel chain or a small, independent resort. Since business strategy will vary, a detailed study must be performed to identify the major issues that must be analyzed before migrating to the cloud.

The cloud is a highly adaptive IT infrastructure that can be shared by many different end …

Sentiment Analysis: A Study On Product Features, Yanyan Meng 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Sentiment Analysis: A Study On Product Features, Yanyan Meng

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sentiment analysis is a technique to classify people’s opinions in product reviews, blogs or social networks. It has different usages and has received much attention from researchers and practitioners lately. In this study, we are interested in product feature based sentiment analysis. In other words, we are more interested in identifying the opinion polarities (positive, neutral or negative) expressed on product features than in identifying the opinion polarities of reviews or sentences. This is termed as the product feature based sentiment analysis. Several studies have applied unsupervised learning to calculate sentiment scores of product features. Although many studies used supervised …

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. PAN, Gary PAN, Dorothy E. Leidner 2012 Singapore Management University

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. Pan, Gary Pan, Dorothy E. Leidner

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In the past two decades, organizational scholars have focused significant attention on how organizations manage crises. While most of these studies concentrate on crisis prevention, there is a growing emphasis on crisis response. Because information that is critical to crisis response may become outdated as crisis conditions change, crisis response research recognizes that the management of information flows and networks is critical to crisis response. Yet despite its importance, little is known about the various types of crisis information networks and the role of IT in enabling these information networks. Employing concepts from information flow and social network theories, this …

Designing A Comprehensive Framework For E-Government Implementation Success With A Special View Of The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Alsaigh 2012 Virginia Commonwealth University

Designing A Comprehensive Framework For E-Government Implementation Success With A Special View Of The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Alsaigh

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of the increasing development in the field of Information Systems (IS) in the last decades, new concepts have appeared to serve specific requirements and needs (Smith 2010; Almarabeh and AbuAli 2010). E-government is one of these concepts, which appeared in 1993 (Silva 2006) to become one of the main tools for governments around the world to enhance the services provided by governments and their agencies (Atallah 2001). Investigating the literature shows that there are common issues in all e-government implementation projects which can be summarized as follows: 1) e-government implementation projects in their nature are vast, and …

Business And Data Analytics: New Innovations In The Management Of E-Commerce, Robert J. Kauffman, Jaideep Srivastava, Jamshid Vayghan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The success of many different kinds of e-business operations depends on data and information, and how they are used to optimize operations, drive sales and marketing, and grow the business. The ability to manage and safeguard data as a strategic asset, transform it into actionable information, and use it as a strategic differentiator is a key contributor to the success of any business operation. What makes this an even more interesting challenge is the speed at which data have been growing in recent years, due to social networking, the Internet, mobile telephony and all kinds of new technologies that create …

Decision-Making Models, Decision Support And Problem Solving, Mark R. LEHTO, Fiona Fui-hoon NAH, Ji Soo YI 2012 Singapore Management University

Decision-Making Models, Decision Support And Problem Solving, Mark R. Lehto, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Ji Soo Yi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This chapter focuses on the broad topic of human decision making. Decision making is often viewed as a stage of human information processing because people must gather, organize, and combine information from various sources to make decisions. However, as decisions grow more complex, information processing actually becomes part of decision making, and methods of decision sup-port that help decision makers process information become of growing importance. Decision making also overlaps with problem solving. The point where decision making becomes problem solving is fuzzy, but many decisions require problem solving, and the opposite is true as well. Cognitive models of problem …

The Impact Of Ict Investments On Development Using The Capability Approach: The Case Of The Nigerian Pre-Paid Electricity Billing System, Salihu Ibrahim-Dasuki, Pamela Abbott, Armin Kashefi 2012 Department of Information Systems and Computing, Brunel University, West London, UK

The Impact Of Ict Investments On Development Using The Capability Approach: The Case Of The Nigerian Pre-Paid Electricity Billing System, Salihu Ibrahim-Dasuki, Pamela Abbott, Armin Kashefi

The African Journal of Information Systems

Most existing ICT for development (ICT4D) literature tends to focus mainly on design, transfer and implementation issues. There is limited focus on the impact of ICT projects on development and little concrete analysis of these initiatives in terms of their long-term developmental impact. In this paper, we use Sen’s notion of capabilities as an evaluative space for ICT project assessment. We employed the freedom concepts of the capability approach to focus on the developmental impact of such projects. We based our evaluation on the Pre-paid Electricity Billing system in Nigeria. Our analysis shows that the pre-paid system failed to fully …

Economic models suggest that firms use a simple cost-benefit calculation to evaluate customer requests for new product features, but an extensive organizational literature shows the decision to implement innovation is more nuanced. We address this theoretical tension by studying how firms respond to customer requests for incremental product innovations, and how these responses change when the requested innovation is complex. Using large sample empirical analyses combined with detailed qualitative data drawn from interviews, we find considerable variance in the relationship between customer demands, complexity, and investments in incremental innovations. The qualitative study revealed the importance of organization structures, competitive pressures, …

An Examination Of Coordination Among Friends And Strangers From A Coordination Theory Perspective, Christopher D. Wamble 2012 New Jersey Institute of Technology

An Examination Of Coordination Among Friends And Strangers From A Coordination Theory Perspective, Christopher D. Wamble

Theses

Within mobile social coordination, there is a field of study known as outeraction, the communicative processes used by people to manage future interactions. It is an important area of research because it identifies how informal interactions support complex collaboration between individuals and groups. Outeraction is primarily conducted through the interpersonal communication channels of texting, instant messaging (IM), face-to-face, and mobile phone or Skype conversations. Currently this area of research in mobile outeraction support systems is weak. It lacks a firm foundation in system building, has very few if any conceptual frameworks, and little empirical knowledge of user requirements and attitudes …

Long Live Design Science Research! .... And Remind Me Again About Whether It Is A New Research Paradigm Or A Rationale Of Last Resort For Worthwhile Research That Doesn't Fit Under Any Other Umbrella, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

There is broadening and increasingly unquestioned acceptance of design science research (DSR). Recently, DSR may have provided an important bridge for overcoming or bypassing artificial barriers to accepting the legitimacy of certain types of research, but in some cases it is not obvious how DSR actually contributed to the research. Perhaps it is time to retire the assumption that DSR is somehow a new and different paradigm for doing research and to move on. Recognizing that the information-systems discipline is quintessentially rooted in design, this panel examines whether we actually need DSR to legitimize research that produces interesting and valuable …
