Twin Cities Area Economic And Business Conditions Report - First Quarter 2015, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald
Twin Cities Minnesota Economic and Business Conditions Report
The Twin Cities economy is expected to grow more slowly over the next several months according to the prediction of the Twin Cities Index of Leading Economic Indicators (LEI). The Twin Cities LEI fell by 5.23 points in this year’s first quarter as three of the five index components declined. The LEI is now 4.1 percent below its level of one year ago. Accounting for the decline in the index are lower residential building permits in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), higher initial jobless claims at the end of last year, and recent weakness in a general measure …

The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment On Labor Market Measures: Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa, 2015 The University of San Francisco
The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment On Labor Market Measures: Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa, David A. Mayom
Master's Theses
There is scant literature examining the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and labor market measures in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. This paper explores the effect of FDI on the labor market measures using panel data of 48 Sub-Saharan African Countries from 1991 to 2009. The result indicates that FDI has a positive and significant effect on employment implying that an increase in the inflow of FDI is associated with higher employment. Thus, Sub-Saharan African governments should strongly consider poverty alleviation and employment policies that encourage and direct FDI to the industries where it can significantly reduce unemployment.

The Relevance Of Economic, Institutional And Cultural Determinants For Venture Capital Investments. A Us-Europe Comparison., Nadja Benes
Master's Theses
This study analyzes the determinants of early-stage VC investments by identifying characteristics in the economic, institutional, as well as cultural framework that could explain the diverging levels of early-stage VC investments across countries. Data was assembled for 16 countries during the period from 1995 until 2013. The results indicate that countries that are more open to trade are associated with higher levels in early-stage venture capital. A higher unemployment rate negatively affects a country’s level of early-stage VC funds. Higher R&D expenditures as a proxy for the technological and innovation capacity in a country as well as a higher value …

Evidence-Based Stakeholder Engagement: The Promise Of Randomized Control Trials For Business And Human Rights, 2015 University of Illinois College of Law
Evidence-Based Stakeholder Engagement: The Promise Of Randomized Control Trials For Business And Human Rights, Patrick J. Keenan
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
When a large-scale development project comes to a poor country, that project typically comes with a stakeholder engagement plan, which structures the relationship between those affected by the new project and the proponents of the project. The plan sorts those affected by the project into categories, distributes economic benefits differentially based on those categories, allocates other benefits which can increase or decrease the social power of those affected, defines the ways that people harmed by the project may seek redress for their injuries, and might even modify existing governance structures. In the past decade, through the efforts of large institutional …

Locational Advantage And The Impact Of Scale: Comparing Local And Conventional Fruit And Vegetable Transportation Efficiencies, 2015 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Locational Advantage And The Impact Of Scale: Comparing Local And Conventional Fruit And Vegetable Transportation Efficiencies, Charles Cate Grigsby
Masters Theses
Fresh produce in the United States often travels thousands of miles in diesel operated semi-trucks before arriving to market. Under a high fuel cost scenario, the current low-cost, efficient supply chain could become a high cost organizational structure for US food distribution. Rising transportation costs of food sourced from distant locations may provide competitive opportunities for small- and mid-sized local producers if transportation costs are a smaller portion of their total costs. Farmers selling fresh produce in east Tennessee farmer markets are surveyed to obtain baseline information on their transportation energy use to deliver their products to market. Local farmer …

Diplomatic Normalization Between The Us And Cuba In Light Of Recent Changes In Us Foreign Policy More Generally, Ethan Zawatsky, Ashley Gemma
Senior Honors Projects
We analyze normalization of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba. We first examine the causes of previous normalizations with Vietnam and China. From these cases, we identify factors that are key to the normalization process. These include political turnover, economic interests, other special interest groups, public sentiment, and what we refer to as the Lawnmower Effect. This effect is observed when one or both nations attempt to reopen diplomatic ties only to continually fail to establish relations due to the endurance of underlying political issues. We use the Multiple Streams Framework (a policy formulation theory) in order to evaluate …
Downtown Parking Meter Demand In El Paso, 2015 University of Texas at El Paso
Downtown Parking Meter Demand In El Paso, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., E. Pallarez, Adam G. Walke
Border Region Modeling Project
Prior research establishes that the price of parking in the city centre often impacts the decision to travel downtown and the mode of transportation utilized. Other factors that influence the decision to drive and park downtown have received less attention. This study uses time series data to analyse the demand for metered parking spaces in El Paso, Texas, USA. In addition to meter rates, the determinants of demand include personal income, gasoline prices, and the price of a substitute good, parking garage spaces. Because international bridges connect downtown El Paso to neighbouring Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, the impacts of trans-boundary …
The Conundrum Of The Disparity Of Growth Between Indian States, 2015 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
The Conundrum Of The Disparity Of Growth Between Indian States, Alexa Cicely Shannon
Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses
How is it that Indian states that seemingly have similar advantages can perform so differently? The objective is to study the relationship between government involvement, and the impact of these factors on economic growth. The goal of this research paper is to determine if there is a correlation between state resources or party affiliation and the outlay from the central government and also to determine if there is a correlation between government outlay and the eventual number of state enterprises and in turn if those state enterprises had an effect on the current GDP Per Capita.

High And Dry: An Economic Analysis Of Drug Use In Dry Counties, Shannon Harris
Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper focuses on how alcohol prohibition affects the drug seeking behaviors of citizens in dry counties. Dry counties are counties that do not permit the production or sale of alcohol and are typically found in Southern states only. This paper analyzes the relationship between dry county laws and three different drug incident measures in order to get a better picture of the unintended consequences of modern alcohol prohibition in the states of Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky. To estimate drug related events I used the seizure of production sites used to make methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs, as reported by …

The Economy Of Oaxaca Decomposed, Albert Codina Sala
Honors College Theses
We analyze the internal economy of Oaxaca State in southern Mexico across regions, districts and municipalities from 1999 to 2009. Using the concept of economic convergence, we find mixed evidence for poorer areas catching up with richer areas during a single decade of economic growth. Indeed, some poorer regions thanks to negative growth have actually diverged away from wealthier areas.
