Employee-Friendly Practices And Innovation, Saeyoung Chang, Hoje Jo, Jo-Ellen Pozner
Employee-Friendly Practices And Innovation, Saeyoung Chang, Hoje Jo, Jo-Ellen Pozner
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
We examine the inter-relationships among employee-friendly policies (EFP), innovation through R&D investment, and firm value. We hypothesize that firms with higher levels of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit are more likely to utilize EFP. Furthermore, we speculate that the value-EFP association is more pronounced in firms with high R&D intensity. Consistent with these assertions, we find that EFP is significantly and positively related to R&D investment and the number of patents. EFP is also associated with increased firm value at high levels of R&D investment and high numbers of patents. Furthermore, we find that firms investing more in R&D are more …

Unlovable Labour: Rejecting The "Do What You Love" Ideology, Trey Dykeman
Unlovable Labour: Rejecting The "Do What You Love" Ideology, Trey Dykeman
Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics
Miya Tokumitsu’s article ‘In the Name of Love’ is polemic against what she refers to as the DWYL (Do What You Love) movement that has been most recognisably popularised and transformed by Steve Jobs. She denounces this movement as an insidious ideology cleverly disguised as an uplifting lifestyle which has as its tenets labour, profit, and individualism; through her analysis of these tenets, she unveils them as alienation, erasure, and precarity, respectively. Her insights aid her in her aim to demonstrate that these ideological pillars do not support the wellbeing of the proletariat but rather reinforce the rugged structure of …
Asymmetries In The Bargaining Process, Margaret E. Winters
Asymmetries In The Bargaining Process, Margaret E. Winters
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Although both sides in academic collective bargaining state that they are interested in the best interests of the institution, there are, of course, differences as to what these interests are and how they are to be achieved. Some of the divergences are differences of degree (the union may look for much larger raises for the economic good of their members and the administration team may look to maintain economic viability for the institution), while others are differences of kind, asymmetries in the process. The present paper considers the latter kind of difference, considering the teams, their planning processes, and their …
Retrenchment Clauses And The Problem Of Force Majeure: Evidence From Aaup Chapter Collective Bargaining Agreements In Ohio, Dominic Wells, Trey Peters
Retrenchment Clauses And The Problem Of Force Majeure: Evidence From Aaup Chapter Collective Bargaining Agreements In Ohio, Dominic Wells, Trey Peters
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
In May of 2020, the University of Akron administration invoked the force majeure clause in their collective bargaining agreement with faculty, which they used to justify bypassing the negotiated retrenchment procedures. The AAUP-Akron challenged the decision by administration, but ultimately lost in arbitration. Faculty at the university were laid off without consideration of rank or tenure status. The arbitrators decision in favor of the administration underscores the need for clear retrenchment language in contracts. This article analyzes the retrenchment language in AAUP chapter contracts in Ohio. Contracts are coded for language on financial exigency, conditions, consultation, order, alternatives, notice, and …
Pandemic Responses: What They Reveal About Crisis Management, Decision-Making, And Shared Governance, Daniel J. Julius
Pandemic Responses: What They Reveal About Crisis Management, Decision-Making, And Shared Governance, Daniel J. Julius
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Colleges and universities have, by and large, responded well, one might say, very effectively as organizations, to the pandemic. This observation may come as a surprise because some would vehemently disagree. Surprising also because in many academic environments, decision-making around managing crises, let alone implementation of solutions, is slow, politicized, and often driven by personal or constituent agendas. Responding to internal or external challenges, implementing strategic plans or effectuating decisions proactively, particularly at the system or institutional level, is difficult. I believe this less than sanguine view is commonly held, and research on decision making in academic organizations over the …

Janus V. Afscme, Revisited, Benjamin Derek Morse
Janus V. Afscme, Revisited, Benjamin Derek Morse
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the days after the Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Janus v. AFSCME (2018)—a 5-4 conservative majority decision deeming the imposition of public union agency fees unconstitutional under the First Amendment—observers declared the end of public-sector unions. The Times called the ruling a “Sharp Blow ''[1] to organized labor. A Washington Post headline deemed the decision a “major blow”[1] [2] In the former piece, the Time’s Supreme Court correspondent wrote that “most of the labor movement’s strength these days is in the public sector. The [Janus] ruling contained a final blow for public …

Interest Groups, Local Politics, And Police Unions, Daniel Disalvo
Interest Groups, Local Politics, And Police Unions, Daniel Disalvo
Publications and Research
Police unions raise issues of great importance for political scientists. Yet, the field has neglected them. This essay argues that political scientists should see police unions as important interest groups, empowered by state collective bargaining laws, that are important players in local politics and shapers of the criminal justice system in America. The organizational properties that make police unions important interest groups are described. The important political questions that arise once we consider police union as interest groups are examined. The existing research on police unions—especially their impact on government costs and police behavior—is detailed. Ultimately, the study of collective …

How The Past Of Outsourcing And Offshoring Is The Future Of Post-Pandemic Remote Work: A Typology, A Model, And A Review, Chris Erickson, Peter Norlander
How The Past Of Outsourcing And Offshoring Is The Future Of Post-Pandemic Remote Work: A Typology, A Model, And A Review, Chris Erickson, Peter Norlander
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Information and communication technology (ICT) challenges traditional assumptions about the capacity to manage workers beyond organizational and physical boundaries. A typology connects a variety of non-traditional work organizations made possible by ICT, including offshoring, outsourcing, remote work, virtual companies, and platforms. A model illustrates how new technology serves as a proximate cause for a revision of social contracts between capital, labor and government reached through bargaining, and how external shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the institutional environment, and limitations in practice influence how technology changes the organization of work. An historical case illustrates the general features of the model, …
Corporate Taxes And Union Wages In The United States, Alison R. Felix, James R. Hines Jr.
Corporate Taxes And Union Wages In The United States, Alison R. Felix, James R. Hines Jr.
Articles
This paper evaluates the effect of U.S. state corporate income taxes on union wage premiums. American workers who belong to unions are paid more than their non-union counterparts, and this difference is greater in low-tax locations, possibly reflecting that unions and employers share tax savings associated with low tax rates. In 2000 the difference between average union and non-union hourly wages was $1.88 greater in states with corporate tax rates below four percent than in states with tax rates of nine percent and above. Controlling for observable worker characteristics, a one percent lower state tax rate was associated with a …
Innovative Behavior Among Service Workers And The Importance Of Leadership: Evidence From An Emerging Economy, Albert Amankwaa, Pattanee Susomrith, Pi-Shen Seet
Innovative Behavior Among Service Workers And The Importance Of Leadership: Evidence From An Emerging Economy, Albert Amankwaa, Pattanee Susomrith, Pi-Shen Seet
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study focuses on how service firms can nurture innovative behavior of employees through the important role of leadership. Despite the growth in innovation research, scholars have been slow to move from an R&D (i.e., technical capital) focus to that focusing on employee innovative behavior. However, organizations’ innovation initiatives heavily depend on employee human capital and behavior at work as these are key inputs in the value creation process. We focus on a specific type of leadership, transformational leadership, and explore a nascent employee concept, job embeddedness, to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms and conditions by which leaders may …
The Impact Of Unions On Workers Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Madison Charnigo
The Impact Of Unions On Workers Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Madison Charnigo
Ideas: Exhibit Catalog for the Honors College Visiting Scholars Series
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020, workers in almost every industry have been impacted--often negatively--by impacts of the pandemic, such as decreased working hours and limited accessibility to earning wages. In his 2022 Visiting Scholars Seminar at Purdue University, economic scholar Dr. William Sprigg's highlighted the detriment that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on minority workers, indicating the need for reformation to improve the quality of life for workers across industries. The implementation of unions has the ability to amplify the voices of disabled workers and minority workers to improve working conditions and increase economic …

Cross-Cultural Examination Of Vacation Policy On Employee Satisfaction And Happiness, Ketan D. Parekh
Cross-Cultural Examination Of Vacation Policy On Employee Satisfaction And Happiness, Ketan D. Parekh
CMC Senior Theses
With the advent of technological advancement, entrepreneurship, and a higher emphasis on meritocracy, societies across the globe have experienced intense competition to outdo one another. This has pushed companies to place increased importance on worker productivity; large and small companies want to see their employees work harder, longer, and faster. With this increased demand for work, companies today are making sure they have suitable reward systems to ensure worker satisfaction and quality work production. However, what these reward systems look like and how they function contrast significantly across cultures, especially as it pertains to corporate leave policies. This thesis examines …
A Labor Of Love: Extensive Exploitation Of Contract Music Workers, Malia Odekirk
A Labor Of Love: Extensive Exploitation Of Contract Music Workers, Malia Odekirk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Workers across the United States are reckoning with unfair labor conditions by unionizing and speaking out. Systemic undervaluing of many workers has created a climate of fear, hidden agendas, and pervasive labor misconduct. The pageantry/marching arts are no exception. As a cultural insider, I conducted interviews, had many informal conversations, and ran a large survey that uncovered how the marching arts exploit instructors extensively despite their experience, education, and efforts. A systematic proclivity toward late payments, abused contracts, egregiously low compensation, and free labor begs the question: how can programs continually mistreat instructors this way? I explore this question through …
