Web Application For Surf Journaling, Zachary James Hislop 2021 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Web Application For Surf Journaling, Zachary James Hislop

Computer Engineering

Before deciding whether to surf, many surfers consult surf forecast services. Current surf forecasting offerings provide general information such as predicted surf height and a condition rating, but these predictions are often misleading, as widely varying swell conditions can receive the same forecast. Additionally, these existing services do not incorporate user feedback into their predictions, which requires users to keep a mental mapping of trends between forecast information and real-life conditions.

This report describes the design and implementation of a web application where users can record the surf conditions and assign ratings to recorded surf sessions. With historical surf conditions …

The Impact Of User Control And Transparency In App Design On Privacy Concerns And Behavior Of Mobile App Users, Arwa Alawajy 2021 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

The Impact Of User Control And Transparency In App Design On Privacy Concerns And Behavior Of Mobile App Users, Arwa Alawajy

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Mobile apps have unprecedented access to sensitive personal information. The increasing commodification of mobile-user data motivates us to explore the vital role of app developers in protecting users’ privacy. This dissertation examines the privacy of mobile app users from the perspective of HCI. According to Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory, people believe they own their personal information and have the right to control how or with whom they share this information. In practice, individuals manage their privacy system and the boundaries between the public and private domain. Users make privacy disclosure decisions according to their individual characteristics and the perceptions …

B-91 Fire Protection Analysis, Evan Phillips 2021 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

B-91 Fire Protection Analysis, Evan Phillips

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

B-91 is a multiuse building on a Department of Defense installation rented out to a defense contractor consisting of laboratory, office, storage, and utility spaces. To determine the adequacy of the building’s fire protection systems as determined by the state-adopted 2015 International Building Code, a prescriptive analysis was performed with specific areas of focus on the building construction and occupancy, emergency egress capacity, fire suppression systems, and fire alarm systems. The building is compliant with code requirements in its construction and the fire alarm systems are adequately designed to provide notice, but the egress from the building’s main conference room …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen 2021 University of New Orleans, New Orleans

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Data reconstruction is significantly improved in terms of speed and accuracy by reliable data encoding fragment classification. To date, work on this problem has been successful with file structures of low entropy that contain sparse data, such as large tables or logs. Classifying compressed, encrypted, and random data that exhibit high entropy is an inherently difficult problem that requires more advanced classification approaches. We explore the ability of convolutional neural networks and word embeddings to classify deflate data encoding of high entropy file fragments after establishing ground truth using controlled datasets. Our model is designed to either successfully classify file …

Dimensionless Analysis Of Trajectories Of Cylindrical Objects Dropped Into Water In Two Dimensions, Yi Zhen

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Nondimensionalization is powerful technique and is widely applied in the study of fluid mechanics and engineering because it helps to reduce the number of free parameters, identify the relative size of effects of parameters, and gain a deeper insight of the essential nature of phenomena. The nondimensionalization of 2D theory has been completed by the author (Zhen et.al.,2020) and new dimensionless equations of motion were obtained. In this study, new dimensionless dynamic equations are extended by incorporating new parameters to cope with various environmental conditions. The new dimensionless analysis of dropped cylindrical objects is consisted of four parts.

Optimization And Characterization Of Doped Optical Fibers For Radiation Balanced Fiber Laser And Amplifier, Mostafa Peysokhan

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Due to the reliability, compactness, low maintenance costs, superior performance, and versatility of fiber lasers and amplifiers, they are commonly employed in scientific and directed energy applications. Among all kinds of fiber lasers and amplifiers, high-power, Yb-dopped fiber lasers and amplifiers have been extensively researched to achieve higher output powers. One of the major hindrances to achieving higher powers with adequate stability and efficiency in high power performance is heat generated in the fiber lasers and amplifiers' core. The Radiation Balanced Laser (RBL) is a viable technique for heat mitigation has been proposed by S.~Bowman in 1995. RBL technique is …

Data-Driven Modeling And Control Of A Two-Link Flexible Manipulator (Tlfm), Samuel Ayankoso 2021 The American University in Cairo AUC

Data-Driven Modeling And Control Of A Two-Link Flexible Manipulator (Tlfm), Samuel Ayankoso

Theses and Dissertations

Two-link flexible manipulators (TLFMs) are used in different application domains, and their merits include lightweight, low energy consumption, high operational speed, transportability, maneuverability, and low cost. Despite the merits of TLFMs, the flexibility of the links introduces modeling and control problems. The existing mathematical modeling techniques of a TLFM, such as the assumed mode method (AMM), finite element method (FEM) and finite difference method (FDM are mathematically complex and do not accurately match the physical system dynamics. Lumped parameter method (LPM) model is a simplified model, but it is also inaccurate. Moreover, different forms of control problems are applicable to …

Using Machine Learning Methods To Predict The Movement Trajectories Of The Louisiana Black Bear, Daniel Clark, David Shaw, Armando Vela, Shane Weinstock, John Santerre, Joseph D. Clark 2021 Southern Methodist University

Using Machine Learning Methods To Predict The Movement Trajectories Of The Louisiana Black Bear, Daniel Clark, David Shaw, Armando Vela, Shane Weinstock, John Santerre, Joseph D. Clark

SMU Data Science Review

In 1992, the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) was placed on the U.S. Endangered Species List. This was due to bear populations in Louisiana being small and isolated enough where their populations couldn’t intersect with other populations to grow. Interchange of individuals between subpopulations of bears in Louisiana is critical to maintain genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding effects. Utilizing GPS (Global Positioning System) data gathered from 31 radio-collared bears from 2010 through 2012, this research will investigate how bears traverse the landscape, which has implications for gene exchange. This paper will leverage machine learning tools to improve upon existing …

Using Scrum To Teach Standards-Based K-12 Computer Science: A Prosepectus For A Master’S Level Methods Class At Buffalo State, Noah M. Pierce 2021 State University of New York College at Buffalo - Buffalo State College

Using Scrum To Teach Standards-Based K-12 Computer Science: A Prosepectus For A Master’S Level Methods Class At Buffalo State, Noah M. Pierce

Career & Technical Education Theses

Computer Science has been increasingly prevalent in K-12 education in recent decades. Most Americans believe that Computer Science is as important as other skills taught in school; further, parents are putting pressure on districts to offer Computer Science programs (1.1). To meet this demand, many teacher preparation programs are adding Computer Science Education to their offering of degrees. This thesis investigates Agile and Scrum product development as a potential method of Computer Science instruction, explores the standards relevant to a Computer Science teacher, and offers a prospectus for a new Graduate Level Methods class to prepare Computer Science teachers to …
