Occurrence Of Pulmonary Arteritis With Lungworm Infections In Gray Seals From New England, 2013-2020, Jillian R. Broadhurst, Inga Sidor Dvm, Ms, Dacvp
Honors Theses and Capstones
Gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) are a common pinniped species in New England coastal waters. Parasitic infection is an important cause of mortality for this species, and lungworm species are frequently implicated in cases of respiratory infection, especially in pups and weanling seals. The most common of these is Otostrongylus circumlitus, a large nematode found in the bronchi and bronchioles of affected seals. The full life cycle is unknown but its presence in lungs and sometimes pulmonary arteries suggests that migration via arterial circulation occurs. Signs and microscopic findings are widely variable; our cases included dyspnea, bloody mucoid …

Predicting Tomorrow: Optimizing The Early Detection Of Disease And Disease Recovery In Dairy Calves Using Precision Technologies, Melissa Cantor
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
The leading causes of morbidity and mortality in preweaned dairy calves are diarrhea and bovine respiratory disease complex (BRD). The delayed detection of these diseases in calves can also delay intervention and disease recovery. The overarching objective of this dissertation was to follow a cohort of calves daily for the first 90 days of life for naturally occurring clinical BRD bouts and diarrheal bouts. The objective answered if feeding behaviors and activity levels were different in at-risk calves during BRD development and BRD recovery from an antimicrobial intervention. Furthermore, the potential of colostrum replacer as a feeding intervention strategy to …

Background: Food insecurity is a global problem that requires a One Health approach. As many households in low- and middle-income nations rely on crops and livestock that they produce to meet their household’s needs, food security and nutrition are closely linked to the health of animals and the environment. Resources controlled by women are more often allocated to uses that benefit the entire household, such as food, health, and educating children, than men’s resources. However, studies of gender control of resources among pastoralist societies are scant. We examined the effect of female and male control of livestock resources on food …

Neutrophil granulocytes are one of the most important defenders of the innate immune system in the host. Moreover, neutrophils are able to reach the inflammation area and kill the pathogens using various defense strategies including neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). However, there is still not enough information available regarding the innate immunity against Toxoplasma gondii in cats that are both definitive and intermediate hosts of this parasite. Therefore, we investigated the in vitro NETs formation which is induced by cat polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) against T. gondii tachyzoites. Firstly, PMNs were isolated from cat venous blood samples by using discontinues Percoll dilutions …

Utilization Of Cardiac Time Intervals By A Customized Electrocardiography And Phonocardiography Device To Evaluate Cardiac Function In Healthy And Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease (Dmvd) Dogs, Karlo Romano Gicana
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cardiac time intervals (CTI) are the indices that provide information on the systolic and diastolic function of the heart. The use of echocardiography is considered the gold standard tool for recognizing cardiac diseases and for describing these CTI. However, factors such as accessibility, cost, and expertise are challenging. Hence, there is the need for an alternative diagnostic tool to measure CTI. This study aimed to investigate the use of a custom and commercially available device that simultaneously recorded both electrocardiogram (ECG) and phonocardiogram (PCG) to determine various CTI in healthy and dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD). These measurements …

The Effect Of Low Dietary Cation–Anion Difference (Dcad) On Urine Acidification And Acid–Base Balance In Dairy Goats Under Tropical Condition, Dang Khoa Do Nguyen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Global warming is characterized by high ambient temperature (HTa). The negative effects of HTa in tropical condition have been well elucidated in dairy goats. The effect of high dietary cation-anion difference (H-DCAD) has been partially elucidated on dairy goats under tropical condition. However, there is scarce information about the low DCAD (L-DCAD) effect on dairy goats under tropical condition. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the potential effect of low DCAD on alleviating HTa effect, urine acidification, and acid-base balance in dairy goats under tropical condition. In total, twelve lactating Saanen goats (n=12) were enrolled and divided into a …

The Role Of Interleukin-6 (Il-6) On Osteogenic Differentiation Potential Of Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells (Hpdlscs) In Vitro, Medania Purwaningrum
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been reported significantly increases in inflammation environment and plays pivotal roles in osteogenic differentiation and matrix mineralization enhancement. However, the regulating pathways governing osteogenic differentiation potential by human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) under IL-6 treatment are still unclear. To elucidate this phenomenon, the pathway inhibiton and stimulation strategies were employed. Osteogenic and pathway-related mRNA marker expression, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, matrix mineralization, and b-catenin stabilization and translocation were analyzed. The results showed that IL-6 significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation in terms of osteogenic marker expression, ALP activity, and matrix mineralization mainly via canonical and non-canonical Wnt pathways …

The Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Application For Canine Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease Treatment, Phanupong Chinnabrut
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The etiology of canine Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) is still unknown. The current treatments are conservative and surgery. Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), nutraceuticals, and rehabilitation were used in the conservative treatment, it only had a 25% success rate. In a dog with severe clinical signs and bony change in radiography, the femoral head and neck ostectomy were selected. This procedure could decrease pain, but in clinical evaluation with force plate and kinetic and kinematic measurements, the dogs were shown to have lameness. The total hip replacement was done in a dog with good clinical results, but cost was a limitation …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Ungulate malaria parasites, such as the species that infects farmed dairy buffaloes (Plasmodium bubalis), have received little attention, with only a few reports in other livestock animals. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the parasites, hosts, and mosquito vectors for their biology and molecular evolution remains inadequate. This study aimed to investigate the natural infection of P. bubalis and its suspected vector, develop an effective detection method, and analyze the genome of P. bubalis and related genera. A total of 177 buffaloes’ blood samples were collected from 2019 to 2021 to evaluate the malaria infection status. Mosquitoes were also collected (1,652 …

Maturation Of Equine Proximal Sesamoid Bones In Thoroughbred Horses, Angela Maria Mangine
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Proximal sesamoid bone (PSB) injuries account for approximately 50% of all fatal catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses. In addition, PSB fractures are not uncommon in Thoroughbred foals and yearlings as a result of energetic or intense free exercise. The ability to interpret some PSB pathology assessments, however, is more difficult given the limited information published on the normal development and maturation of these paired sesamoid bones. In addition, the level of normal variation in PSB morphological and structural parameters within the Thoroughbred population as a function of age, body size, gender, and inter-animal variation are not well documented, complicating …

Structural Adaptation Of Equine Proximal Sesamoid Bones To High-Speed Exercise, Kathryn Mary Babiarz
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Proximal sesamoid bone (PSB) fractures are one of the most commonly reported catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries (CMI) in Thoroughbred racing. Despite the seriousness of these injuries, an understanding of the structural changes that occur normally within PSBs in response to the biomechanical forces of high-speed exercise and how they relate to pathological events leading to fracture remain limited. To address this critical knowledge gap, PSBs from Thoroughbred horses were analyzed with both computed tomography (CT) and microcomputed tomography (µCT) to assess their morphological and structural parameters. Comparisons were made using samples from the left and right forelimbs of Thoroughbreds of both …

An Assessment Of The Carrier State And A Novel Marker Of Leptospira And Abortion In Central Kentucky Horses, Gloria Louise Gellin
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Leptospirosis is a reemerging zoonotic infection of worldwide importance and affects all mammals. The bacterium is transmitted to animals and humans by urine, fetal membranes and body fluids. Leptospira shedding in the urine contaminates both soil and water, exposing both humans and animals to the bacterium. Leptospirosis in horses can cause abortion and is one of the etiologies of equine recurrent uveitis which can lead to blindness. Equine leptospiral abortion in Central Kentucky is primarily caused by serovar Pomona, with occasional cases attributed to serovar Grippotyphosa. There are a few reports in the literature attributing abortion to serovar Bratislava in …

Muscle Mass And Immune Function In The Senior Horse, Alisa Christina Herbst
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Senior horses (≥ 15 years) represent up to one-third of the global equine population, and the proportion of old horses (≥ 20 years) in the U.S. has been steadily increasing. Aging is associated with a loss of skeletal muscle mass in horses, and while age-related muscle loss is comparingly well characterized in humans, little is currently known concerning underlying mechanisms, adverse outcomes, or the prevalence of low muscle mass in senior horses. One factor proposed to play a role in the development of age-related muscle atrophy in humans is inflamm-aging, a low-grade inflammation that affects elderly people and that has …

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Cattle Report And Their Purpose
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc) of beef production. Obviously, the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore he/she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers of the Nebraska Beef Cattle Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed description …

Pseudomonas Survive Thermal Processing And Grow During Vacuum Packaged Storage In An Emulsified Beef System, Samuel C. Watson, Rebecca A. Furbeck, Byron D. Chaves, Gary A. Sullivan
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
New research has suggested the ability of Pseudomonas, a common spoilage microorganism, to grow in cooked beef products stored under vacuum which challenges the traditional understanding of the role of Pseudomonas during cooked beef spoilage. Understanding the mechanisms of survival and growth of Pseudomonas in these products is crucial for improving shelf life. The objective of this experiment was to determine Pseudomonas survival in a thermally processed, emulsified cooked beef model system. After eight weeks of refrigerated storage, Pseudomonas was recovered from cooked emulsified beef, indicating the potential for Pseudomonas to survive thermal processing and cause spoilage in cooked vacuum …
