In many clinical settings, therapists are continuously seeking efficient and valid assessments for older adults to determine their physical abilities and functional status. The Patient Reported Outcome Instrument System (PROMIS) is a newly developed computer adapted test (CAT) that is being incorporated into electronic medical records and has been reported to assess a person’s physical function. The current gold standard to assess different levels of frailty and physical function in older individuals is the Modified Physical Performance Test (mPPT). •30-60% community dwelling older adults fall each year, which is the leading cause of injury, death, and traumatic hospital admissions in the elderly.1 This costs the U.S. health care system $20-30 billion per year.2 Currently used older adult self-report measures demonstrate poor responsiveness3, thus failing to detect a decline in function on early enough for preventative physical therapy intervention.

Why Nordic Hamstring?

• Hamstrings are the most commonly injured muscle in sprinting and

  kicking sports (soccer, football and rugby).

• Recurrent hamstring injuries lead to longer time loss than the original injury.

• Despite the presence of preventa- tive programs, research has not yet documented an effective, low-cost, widely accessible test to determine hamstring injury risk.

Examining The Lived Experiences Of Families Who Have Adopted Children And Received Occupational Therapy Services, David Simpson

Purpose: This qualitative descriptive study focused on the experiences of families who have adopted children from different countries and placed them in occupational therapy services.

Method: Three different sets of parents were interviewed to gather data on the adoption process and on their experiences with receiving services from an OT. Each interview was conducted either with one or both parents present. Only one interview was conducted with each family.

Discussion: While families often have quality experiences working with an OT and observe improvements in their children, some families do not receive quality services. This is due to lack of communication …

Background: Due to numerous changes in reimbursement, healthcare delivery and the field of occupational therapy in recent years, the health care arena is now driven by efforts to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of interventions. Therapists, specifically, are challenged by multiple factors, particularly cost-containment, that influences their ability to deliver occupational therapy services. However, in an attempt to promote best practice, occupational therapists must incorporate occupation-based interventions into daily treatment in all practice settings. • A high degree of variability in clinical presentation and length of recovery has made management of this condition difficult.

• This review examines whether pre-existing risk factors or sign and symptom based variables exist to reliably predict a patient’s likelihood to experience a protracted recovery from concussion.

• Plagiocephaly and brachycephaly are skull deformations that occur in nearly half of all infants. These deformities are present at birth or can develop shortly after birth due to head positioning while lying supine. Depending on the severity of the deformity, infants may develop negative long-term developmental outcomes. There are generally two ways to treat such patients; repositioning or with use of orthotics (helmet therapy).

Background and Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the largest source of physical disability in the United States and the joint most commonly affected by OA is the knee. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is frequently implemented as a treatment for knee OA There is research that anxiety affects the patient's outcomes following total joint arthroplasty, but nothing to suggest how to specifically manage it.
