Finasteride is currently approved and largely used as a therapeutic option for androgenetic alopecia. Apparently a safe drug and effective at the onset of its application, several concerns have since appeared over the years regarding the frequency and magnitude of finasteride adverse effects, which in some cases appear irreversible even after drug termination.

This paper discusses the use of finasteride for androgenic alopecia from two distinct perspectives. Known as a GPCR-like receptor, it is a component of the hedgehog signaling pathway; a pathway involved in body patterning and the regulation of adult stem cells. INTRODUCTION: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROs) specific for genital psoriasis (GenPs) have not been described. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, qualitative study in patients with moderate-to-severe GenPs, we sought to develop a PRO useful for GenPs symptom assessment. A literature review was performed to identify relevant psoriasis or GenPs symptoms and existing PROs that may be useful in the evaluation of symptom severity in GenPs patients. The literature review findings were discussed with clinicians, and then patients with GenPs. Background

Increases in outdoor temperature may lead to increases in sunburn, outdoor exposure, and skin cancer in human populations.

Objective

This study aimed to quantify sunburn incidence and risk for Ohio beachgoers exposed to varying outdoor conditions.

Methods

Sunburn incidence data were obtained through a prospective cohort study at East Fork Lake (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA). Recruitment occurred over 26 weekend days. Beach interviews and follow-up telephone interviews obtained exposure and health information. New sunburns were self-reported 8–9 days post-enrollment. Survey data were paired with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) index and temperature data for statistical analysis.

The pathogenesis of acne is largely multifactorial, with heredity and hormones strongly contributing to one’s risk of developing the chronic inflammatory skin condition.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, recurrent follicular occlusion disease with painful, sometimes debilitating, cutaneous draining lesions and subcutaneous abscesses (DynaMed Plus, 2016). Hidradenitis suppurativa is understood to be a multifactorial disease that is hard to treat in some patients, especially those with a severe form of the disease. For this project, the efficacy of adalimumab for hidradenitis suppurativa was assessed and whether it is more beneficial than traditional treatments used. Eosinophilic annular erythema (EAE) is a relatively new entity, clinically presenting as a figurate erythema. The cause of EAE remains obscure, but it has been associated with several chronic conditions and malignancies. We describe an unusual case of EAE developing before the onset of autoimmune hepatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disorder that manifests as eczematous lesions, often associated with allergic rhinitis and asthma. Historically, moderate-to-severe disease has been managed with systemic immunosuppression, such as oral corticosteroids, which result in relapse and limiting side effects. Due to recent advancements in the identification of interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13 as key mediators in AD, new biological agents have been developed for treatment. Aims: This study investigated the seroprevalence and sexual risk behavior factors associated with syphilis and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) among men who have sex with men (MSM), in Manado, Indonesia.

Methods: Serum samples and questionnaires regarding their socio-demographic and sexual behaviour were collected from 60 MSM in Manado. Samples were screened for anti-HSV-2 IgG for herpes, the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) and the Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutination (TPHA) test for syphilis. A cross sectional method was used in this study.

Photodermatoses cover the skin’s abnormal reactions to sunlight, usually to its ultraviolet (UV) component or visible light. Etiologically, photodermatoses can be classified into 4 categories:  (1) immunologically mediated photodermatoses (idiopathic photodermatoses); (2) drug- or chemical-induced photosensitivity; (3) hereditary photodermatoses; and (4) photoaggravated dermatoses. The incidence of photodermatoses in the pediatric population is much lower than in adults, Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) is the most common form of photodermatoses in children, followed by erythropoietic protoporphyria. Early diagnosis and investigations should be performed to avoid long-term complications. Photoprotection is the mainstay of photodermatoses management, including use of physical protection and sunscreen.
