Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a well-documented malignant tumor commonly found in the salivary glands. Cutaneous involvement is very rare, especially when presenting as a primary cutaneous neoplasm. Gallagher first described primary cutaneous MEC in 1959 and since then, to the best of our knowledge, there have been approximately 20 reports published in the literature. Here we present a very rare case of primary cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Functional Analysis Of A Critical Glycine (Glycine 12) In Beta-Type Connexins Of Human Skin, Rasheed Bailey
Biology Theses
At least five beta-type connexins are expressed in various layers of the skin (Cx26, Cx30, Cx30.3, Cx31, and Cx32) and all include a glycine residue at position 12. Glycine12 (G12) is located about halfway through the cytoplasmic amino terminus and has been the focus of several studies related to connexin diseases and gap junction channel structure. The importance of this residue is evident in the severity and diversity of diseases associated with amino acid substitutions at G12 including hereditary forms of skin disease, deafness and neuropathy. This study uses bioinformatic analysis in combination with mutational analysis and electrophysiology to better …

The Novel corona virus is bringing multiple challenges for health care professionals. Skin is the biggest organ and the first line of defense against different infections and external factors. Being the front line warriors, health care professionals are susceptible to various skin conditions due to prolonged use of personal protective equipment. These adverse skin conditions are redness, irritation, itching, contact dermatitis, and aggravation of underlying skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and acne vulgaris. In the current global situation, the potential incidence of such adverse dermatological effects does not in any manner cause the HCPs to deviate from the strict specific …

Background:
Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare inflammatory cutaneous disorder that is thought to be due to innate immune system dysfunction, specifically of neutrophils. PG has been well documented in patients with autoimmune disorders like Ulcerative Colitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. PG can also present in surgical patients, imitating a potential wound infection and necrotizing fasciitis. Although PG is a diagnosis of exclusion, prompt recognition is essential to attaining desired aesthetic outcomes, especially with breast involvement. We present a case series of four patients who developed PG following breast surgery. We analyze each patient’s medical history, symptoms, wound progression and management …

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is an inflammatory papulosquamous disorder of unknown etiology. It is characterized by hyperkeratotic scaling plaques with an orange-red hue, “islands of sparing,” and palmoplantar keratoderma; it may cause erythroderma. There have been no completed controlled clinical trials for the treatment of PRP, and there are no FDA approved treatments at this time; most treatment evidence is derived from case reports. This review of the literature explores the use of various biologics which have been attempted for treatment of widespread or treatment resistant PRP. Some case reports have demonstrated efficacy of anti-IL-17 and anti-IL12/23 agents for PRP …

Juvenile xanthogranulomas (JXG) are a benign histiocytic cell proliferative disorder in early childhood. They most commonly present within the first two years of life with papular or nodular changes to the skin on the head, neck or upper trunk. Xanthogranulomas are mostly self-limiting, can be singular or multiple, and rarely can infer a systemic disease process1. The purpose of this study was to publish a unique finding of an extra-tendinous solitary mass in an otherwise healthy 17-year old, with surgical and medical treatment after diagnosis.

Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare, malignant, adnexal neoplasm that is derived from the outer root sheath (ORS) of the hair follicle. These tumors predominantly occur in elderly patients on sun-exposed areas, specifically on the head and neck with the face defined as the most common location. The mean age of diagnosis is 70 years old with a slight male predominance. These lesions are commonly identified as a papular, nodular, and sometimes, exophytic. They generally arise de-novo, but may also derivate from an underlying proliferating trichilemmal cyst with a loss of p53, a seborrheic keratosis, a nevus sebaceous, or a …

Introduction: Acne is a common skin disorder with multifactorial causes that can persist beyond adolescence or appear for the first time in adulthood. Treatments of varying potency exist, ranging from over-the-counter face washes and creams to prescription topical and oral treatments. Current treatment guidelines target sebum production, exfoliation of excess skin cells, and the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. Research as early as 1995 suggests dysfunctions of the skin barrier, such as abnormal ceramide levels and increased water loss, play a role in the pathophysiology of acne and are not addressed by current treatments. This review analyzes the role of moisturizing …
