Background Although White individuals have higher incidence of melanoma, clinical outcomes are worse among patients with skin of color. This disparity arises from delayed diagnoses and treatment that are largely due to clinical and sociodemographic factors. Investigating this discrepancy is crucial to decrease melanoma-related mortality rates in minority communities. A survey was used to investigate the presence of racial disparities in perceived sun exposure risks and behaviors. Methods A survey consisting of 16 questions was deployed via social media to assess skin health knowledge. Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a mutation in the C1 esterase inhibitor gene. HAE affects 1/50,000 people worldwide. Three main types of HAE exist: type I, type II, and type III. Type I is characterized by a deficiency in C1-INH. C1-INH is important in the coagulation complement, contact systems, and fibrinolysis. Most HAE cases are type I. Type I and II HAE result from a mutation in the SERPING1 gene, which encodes C1-INH. Formally known as type III HAE is typically an estrogen-dependent or hereditary angioedema with normal C1-INH activity. Current guidelines now recommend subdividing …

Acne vulgaris (acne) is the eighth most common skin disorder worldwide. Because of the heterogeneous pathology of acne and the increasing antibiotic resistance of the causal agent (Cutibacterium acnes), novel therapeutics need to be developed to treat acne. One option is endolysins, highly conserved enzymes from bacteriophages that disrupt the bacterial cell wall. Endolysins retain bactericidal and bacteriostatic activity when applied to bacteria in vitro and are safe for topical application. We hypothesize that the endolysin (ENDL) from the P100.1 C. acnes bacteriophage will exhibit bacteriostatic activity against C. acnes in vitro. Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors In Advanced Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systemic Review And Meta-Analysis, Haoran Zhang, Ai Zhong, Junjie Chen

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPI) for the treatment of patients with advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A meta-analysis was conducted, and the efficacy and safety of CPI were assessed.

RESULTS: A total of 13 studies with 980 patients were included. The pooled objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate were 47.2% and 64.4%, separately. In addition, patients with primary tumor located in head and neck (odds ratio [OR]: 0.374, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.219-0.640, p < 0.001) and positive expression of programmed death ligand 1 (OR: 0.364, 95% CI: 0.158-0.842, P = 0.018) had superior ORR during CPI treatment. The incidence of progression free survival at 6 and 12 months was 59.3% and 52.8%, and 80.6% and 76.4% for overall survival. As for safety, the overall incidence of adverse events with all grades and 3-4 grade was 76.9% and 20.2%.

CONCLUSIONS: Our systematic review confirmed the satisfying efficacy and acceptable toxicity of CPI for advanced CSCC.

Background: It can take an average of 38.9 days to see dermatology from referral to initial appointment. As a result, delays in diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening conditions such as malignant melanoma could occur. Primary care providers frequently refer patients for benign conditions that can be appropriately managed in the primary care setting; often due to lack of knowledge or confidence in their clinical management skills. Educational resources equip providers with the knowledge and tools to feel confident in their management of various skin conditions in a primary care setting. The use of oral gauze is a quick, cheap, and effective method of preventing bleeding into the patient's mouth during dermatologic surgery. We recommend this technique combined with appropriate positioning for lesions in the perioral and perinasal regions. Similar approaches may be applied for the prevention of bleeding into the ear canal during facial/periauricular surgery.

Introduction: Turner syndrome (TS) is associated with distinct manifestations in women and girls including short stature, cardiac abnormalities, premature ovarian failure as well as dermatological features, including lymphedema, keloids, onychodystrophy, and acne. Although many dermatological concerns present during the first few decades of life, the overwhelming majority of respondents are not provided with dermatology referrals at diagnosis.

Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized an author designed survey to assess self-reported dermatological manifestations, dermatology referral experience, common therapies for select dermatological conditions, as well as a validated 10-question Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) to assess quality-of-life impact in women and girls with …
