Costal cartilage is much understudied compared with the load-bearing cartilages. Abnormally grown costal cartilages are associated with the inherited chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum resulting in sunken and pigeon chests, respectively. A lack of understanding of the ultrastructural and molecular biology of costal cartilage is a major confounder in predicting causes and outcomes of these disorders. This study analyzed the structure of marginal human costal cartilage (ribs 6-10) through scanning electron and atomic force microscopes and identified the presence of straw-like structures running longitudinally. We also demonstrated that chondrocytes tend to occur singly or as doublets and …

Decision Quality Instrument For Treatment Of Hip And Knee Osteoarthritis: A Psychometric Evaluation, Karen R. Sepucha, Dawn Stacey, Catharine F. Clay, Yuchiao Chang 2011 Harvard University

Decision Quality Instrument For Treatment Of Hip And Knee Osteoarthritis: A Psychometric Evaluation, Karen R. Sepucha, Dawn Stacey, Catharine F. Clay, Yuchiao Chang

Dartmouth Scholarship

A high quality decision requires that patients who meet clinical criteria for surgery are informed about the options (including non-surgical alternatives) and receive treatments that match their goals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties and clinical sensibility of a patient self report instrument, to measure the quality of decisions about total joint replacement for knee or hip osteoarthritis.

Femoroacetabular Impingement: Saving The Joint, Ronald Huang, Javad Parvizi 2011 Thomas Jefferson University

Femoroacetabular Impingement: Saving The Joint, Ronald Huang, Javad Parvizi

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Many factors have been linked to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip, but often, cases are still considered “idiopathic.” Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has been suggested as a possible etiologic factor for the otherwise “idiopathic” cases. It is theorized that the subtle morphologic abnormalities seen at the head-neck junction and acetabulum in FAI may lead to labral tears, chondral damage, and subsequent progression of OA. Prevalence of FAI has been suggested to be as high as 14% in the general population. It often presents in young active patients that subject their hip joint to repetitive micro trauma associated with …

Characterization Of Quadriceps Neuromuscular Function In Knee Osteoarthritis, Michael James Berger 2011 The University of Western Ontario

Characterization Of Quadriceps Neuromuscular Function In Knee Osteoarthritis, Michael James Berger

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

PURPOSE: The purpose of this thesis was to characterize quadriceps neuromuscular dysfunction in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Concerns pertaining to study design in this patient population (e.g. disease severity criteria and muscle imaging outcome measures) were also addressed.

METHODS: Five studies were undertaken using data acquired from volunteers recruited at the local institution and from participants in the public source dataset of the Osteoarthritis Initiative (http://oai.epi-ucsf.org/datarelease/). Clinical disease severity was evaluated with the Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Radiographic severity was evaluated with Kellgren-Lawrence Grading (KLG). Quadriceps muscle isometric strength and isotonic power were measured …

Natural History Study Of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, Amyoplasia Type, Trisha Nichols 2011 University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston

Natural History Study Of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, Amyoplasia Type, Trisha Nichols

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Arthrogryposis or Arthrogrypsosis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) are terms used to describe the clinical finding of multiple congenital contractures. There are more than 300 distinct disorders associated with arthrogryposis. Amyoplasia is the most common type of arthrogryposis and is often referred to as the “classic” type. There is no known cause of amyoplasia and no risk factors have been identified. Moreover, there is no established diagnostic criteria, which has led to inconsistency and confusion in the medical literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the natural history of amyoplasia, to determine if there are any identifiable risk factors and …

Perfil Dos Acidentes De Trabalho No Brasil, 2004-2007 / Analysis Of Labor Accidents In Brazil, 2004 - 2007, Everton Fernando Alves

Everton Fernando Alves

O aumento …

Effect Of Calcium Supplements On Risk Of Myocardial Infarction And Cardiovascular Events: Meta-Analysis, Mark J. Bolland, Allison Avenell, John A. Baron, A. Grey 2010 University of Aukland

Effect Of Calcium Supplements On Risk Of Myocardial Infarction And Cardiovascular Events: Meta-Analysis, Mark J. Bolland, Allison Avenell, John A. Baron, A. Grey

Dartmouth Scholarship

Objective: To investigate whether calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular events.

Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in older people. Calcium supplements margin- ally reduce the risk of fracture, and most guidelines recommend adequate calcium intake as an integral part of the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis. Consequently, calcium supplements are commonly used by people over the age of 50. Observational stu- dies suggest that high calcium intake might protect against vascular disease, and the findings are consis- tent with those of interventional studies of calcium sup- plements thatshow improvementin some vascular risk factors. In contrast, …
